About the Author

Thomas Engel has taught chemistry for more than 20 years at the University of Washington, where he is currently Professor of Chemistry and Associate Chair for the Undergraduate Program. Professor Engel received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago. He then spent 11 years as a researcher in Germany and Switzerland, in which time he received the Dr. rer. nat. habil. degree from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1980, he left the IBM research laboratory in Zurich to become a faculty member at the University of Washington. Professor Engel's research interests are in the area of surface chemistry, and he has published more than 80 articles and book chapters in this field. He has received the Surface Chemistry or Colloids Award from the American Chemical Society and a Senior Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which has allowed him to establish collaborations with researchers in Germany. He is currently working together with European manufacturers of catalytic converters to improve their performance for diesel engines. Philip Reid has taught chemistry at the University of Washington since he joined the chemistry faculty in 1995. Professor Reid received his bachelor's degree from the University of Puget Sound in 1986, and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992. He performed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, campus before moving to Washington. Professor Reid's research interests are in the areas of atmosphere chemistry, condensed-phase reaction dynamics, and nonlinear optical materials. He has published more than 70 articles in these fields. Professor Reid is the recipient of a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation, is a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation, and is a Sloan fellow.

This textbook is hard to follow and does not provide you with enough information to complete all of the problems they give you. Some of the answers to the problems in the back of the book also contain errors, which is extremely annoying. Honestly, no one in my physical chemistry class uses it; we just study our class notes, and our professor does a wonderful job at clearly and thoroughly explaining all of the concepts. If you are a student, please do not waste your money on this "textbook." If you really, really need it for a class, then, I would recommend getting a way cheaper version of it.

The book explains concepts in very obtuse ways. I had to rely on other sources to understand most material in the later chapters. On the other hand, it is very annoying that some key concepts are explained solely within the contexts of overly-simplified example problems.For those with strong calculus backgrounds, the logic of this book shouldn't be too difficult to follow. For others, not so much.

Poorly written, obtuse, and at times flat out unhelpful. I learned more by googling topics than by wasting my time struggling to decipher this text.

Amy J. L. Baker, PhD, has a doctorate in developmental psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and is a professional writer and researcher. She is the author of Adult Children of Parental Alienation Syndrome and coauthor of Co-parenting with a Toxic Ex, among other books and articles on parental alienation and parent-child relationships. J. Michael Bone, PhD, has a doctorate from the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science of the New School for Social Research in New York, NY. He has served as a mental health expert, consultant, and advisor to the court on parental alienation cases around the United States, and maintains a consulting practice in Florida.  Brian Ludmer, BComm, LLB, is an attorney whose practice is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has a Bachelor of Commerce (1982) and Bachelor of Law (1985) from the University of Toronto. Ludmer has practiced corporate and securities law for twenty-seven years and in parallel he conducts a family law practice focused on situations involving custody disputes, child estrangement, and parental alienation, as well as high net worth divorce litigation and business valuation.

Invaluable advice. I was in a custody battle with my ex husband for nine years. Had a high priced lawyer and all, but got nowhere with the judge. This book helped me realize what proof the judge needed to make an informed custody decision. I now have full custody of my children and I owe it in part to this book. It finally helped me organize all my information and present it to the judge in a way she could understand. It also helped me realize that even thought I know my case through and through, the judge only knows what both parties present in the way of evidence because they have hundreds of cases. YOU need to present solid evidence and this book can help you do that. Good luck and remember, it is about the kids lives, not your wants!

By far one of the best books we've found on how to deal with our custody situation. My husband has an ex who he was never married to and there have been some pretty substantial issues with visitation. We found this book to be very helpful and the lawyer we discussed it with found it was fantastic for helping us organize our information. We've had several friends start telling people about it as well. We've read a lot of books on the subject and this was by far the best!

This book explains with great detail what parents do to alienate children from the other parent.It helps understand what are they doing and why, so you can manage the conflict better, and does have some advise on countermeasures.

This should be given out to everyone at the law office when they are hiring a lawyer. I wish I had this from the start. I was given the information of this book from a support group I belong to.

I only gave this 3 stars because I was hoping there would be more about preparing for trial, for testifying and dealing with the types of questions attorneys ask during cross examination.

Much of this book is about parental alienation in a post divorce setting.As a person just getting started, and trying to anticipate problems, this wasn’t as helpful. However I was able to glean some insights from the exercises provided.

Helpful read for parents who are alienated and need language to fight back without being alienating.

This is a well written book with a systematic evaluation of phychological and legal issues.

About the Author

Thelma Larkin Goldberg grew up in Cambridge, MA, where she studied dance at Bates School of Dance in Central Square. After earning her B.S. in Special Education from Lesley College in 1974, she taught in the Boston Public School system, earning her Masters in Special Education from Regis College while starting a family and relocating to Lexington, MA. After founding the Dance Inn in 1983, in the dining room of her home, Thelma eventually found her way to the rich tap scene in the Boston area, studying at the Leon Collins Studio in Brookline and meeting many of the friends and associates that have continued to inspire her since then. In 1997 she started Dance Inn Productions, a nonprofit organization, and served as its Executive Director, producing annual International Tap Day Festivals that honored master tappers with the Tapestry Award for Teaching. Among the dancers she has celebrated are Dianne Walker, Brenda Bufalino, Sarah Petronio, Buster Brown, Jimmy Slyde and Billy Siegenfeld. Thelma has taught at several festivals around the country and was on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory for many years. She founded and directed the Pre-Professional Program of Tap City: The New York City Tap Festival and is artistic director of the Legacy Dance Company, the pre-professional program of the Dance Inn. Her studio has now grown to two locations, and she continues to teach full time while mentoring a passionate, young faculty. Her goal is to dance forever!

After taking tap while growing up then not tapping for about 8 years and coming back to try to teach it, I was struggling with figuring out how to structure classes and build exercises that would prepare students to progress. Then I found this book, and it was exactly the answer I was looking for. The breakdown of the exercises is easy to follow and the progressions from one level to the next are easy to see and understand. I especially love the music suggestions and the extra tips about proper technique. Lots of little things I had forgotten after years away from tap. I can't wait to start using the exercises with my students over the summer and next year. I highly recommend this book to other tap teachers looking for tips and ideas to structure their classes. Thank you Thelma for creating this amazing book!!

Fantastic resource! I attended a workshop by Thelma Goldberg, and her warm, outgoing personality exudes through much of this book as well! Clever combinations and a great outline for different age-levels for tap.

I don't know if it's only my copy of the book, but pages 86-98 are out of sequence. The pages skip from page 87 to page 99; pages 88 to 98 are inserted between page 104 and page 105. This is an unacceptable error, especially in light of the $66.92 price tag on this paperback book. The content of the book is top-notch, but if all copies of the book are like this one, the publisher did a shoddy job.

Right from the very beginning, Thelma lays out exactly what her approach is to teaching tap to children ages 6-12 and she methodically breaks down her methods level-by-level.I appreciate how Thelma refers to herself as a student as well as a teacher. I have had the pleasure of taking classes with Thelma, so I know first hand what a dedicated and enthusiastic student she is. I also have seen a number of her studios productions over the years and can equally say she is a committed, passionate teacher, choreographer and leader. Because of this, I can say that Thelma is deeply rooted and she never stops growing!Thelma's Tap Notes is guided by four principles: Release, Relax, Rhythmic Progressions and Full Bodied Rhythm-Making (TM). I have been in the security and networking business for more than 15 years. Over the years I have been both on the technical and business side dealing with many aspects of security spanning reverse engineering, operational security, incident management, security product management and so on.I recently got interested in 802.15.4 (ZigBee, 6LoWPAN, etc.) and software defined radio (SDR) primarily from a security perspective. So I bought this book to have a practical guide on the matter. I have only processed the chapters that I was interested in but I can say I have been impressed. The authors are clearly very knowledgeable on the topic and they convey their message very well. I learned quite a lot.One caveat, this may not be for the complete beginner. Authors provide a 'simplicity' score for the attacks they describe (10 being the easiest, like using an already available tool to point and click; 1 being the most difficult like requiring you write a new exploit code yourself) so complete beginners may be able to find few attack concepts that they can try. But overall the book assumes you are technical minded and have some technical background.With that in mind, highly recommended to anyone looking for an in-depth understanding of wireless security.

I have owned the previous two editions of this book, and as always the authors do not disappoint. This book will let anyone with basic linux knowledge understand the tools and techniques to hack wireless networks with ease. There is also a new chapter on Software Defined Radios which is a great primer into the subject.

A great investment for anyone working in or wanting to learn more about pentesting and cyber security!

I found this book to be very detailed and informative on the subject. Chapter 14 on hacking Z wave Smart Homes was very interesting. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in wireless security.

Was waiting for this third edition for a long time, it was worth the wait.Goes in depth into the various wireless technologies and their hacks, but also suggests effective countermeasures.A must read for wireless security hackers, penetration testers, etc.

Very colorful, graphically interesting presentation. But I was disappointed with this purchase.Main problem is that once you've read one chapter, you've read all 13, you just don't know it yet. After about 3-4 chapters, you start going, "Wait. Did I lose my bookmark? This sounds and looks like the last chapter I remember reading." I have to give credit for the author's taking her apparent career as a type consultant and workshop presenter to the published book format. More income and maybe a textbook - charge cards accepted - for those workshops. "We'll have quizzes, fun guessing games and font charts for the next 13 weeks as we drill into you the concept that the font should suit the purpose. Except when you want the reverse to happen."As a graphic designer and creator of many fonts over a 30-year career, let me save you some time, trouble and money: "Your font should suit its purpose.Unless you don't want it to." No charge; you're very welcome.

Loved this book. It's fun, interactive and I really enjoyed how Sarah has analyzed type to teach us how it influences us every day. A great book for reference if your starting to learn about type and choosing the right typefaces for your project and includes fun and interesting exercises.

I've been choosing and working with fonts since the late 70s and I have dozens of books on type… but this book is different. Through many fun illustrations, anecdotes, and facts, the author tells the story of how fonts and typography affect us. Some of it is rather light, with disconnected sections, but it's the kind of book you can open anywhere and find something interesting.

This book is very accessible yet provides great insights into the psychology of fonts and how they influence the choices we make and how we present ourselves. A fun read!

When I finished THE DAY THAT WENT MISSING, I though for a long time. I thought about the author doing what she does best in a literary memoir and that is excavating. The author does that here in slow painstaking steps. He exhausts every piece of the story of his brother's death and follows it to the end, even when that end might not give him all the answers he wants. It is all so difficult for him. There's his approach and pulling back from THE spot where his brother drowned and then finally a full-on confrontation, not quite leading to an exoneration, but an acceptance.

When I was a child, my father often went on business to England from our home in Connecticut. We spent many summers in Cornwall and I fell in love with the area. I became aware of this book several months ago after reading excerpts in several online UK newspapers. It seemed like such a sad story, yet one I wanted to read. After reading the review in the NY Times (Dec. 18) I purchased the book on my Kindle and could not put it down. This is a sad, but beautifully written story.

Gutrenching. Author's storytelling, candor and authenticity bring this book alive. A book I won't soon forget. A highly recommended memoir.

Decades later, Richard finds himself asking why. So begins a quest to uncover the events of that summer, to turn his eye on them for the first time – and this time, to not look away.I found this book to be a rich experience, written in plain, precise, intelligent language that examines difficult emotions in unsparing clarity. Richard’s his quest throws up many unexpected problems for him. First of all, it’s difficult to persuade his mother to talk about her memories, but when she does he finds they don’t match his own. For instance, she had always sworn that Nicky’s things were in a red suitcase in the attic. Ultimately, Richard has to confront the fact that he beat Nicky once and for all – they were both in the sea that day, and Richard outswam the wave that claimed Nicky’s life. He returns many times to this, trying to strip away the pecking order of family life that stops you seeing a sibling for who they truly are, trying to understand who Nicky might really have been. There are frequent references to Lord of the Flies, and the feral rivalries of youth.Part of Richard’s quest is an attempt to understand why Nicky’s death became a subject the family never shared or talked about. He wants to unravel how that happened and whether it might have been possible to handle it differently. This was before the days when counselling was routine. We get a portrait of an ordinary family in the late 1970s, trying to do their best in a situation that nobody is ever really equipped to handle.With so many unreliable memories, every detail takes on a totemic quality; the exact location of the beach, the exact time of death, the coroner’s findings. All are part of Richard’s journey to confront the events – and not just the sequential facts, but deeper and perhaps unpalatable emotional truths.Every step of the search gives him a new emotion to assimilate. For the most part, I found the narrative riveting, although I did think it slow in some of the later sections. Nevertheless, I feel privileged to have been taken on such an honest journey and I’ll be thinking about it for some considerable time. Moving and memorable.

Grief is an intimate thing. No one really can know how you feel when you lose a loved one, but I know from experience that it can be shared. It was hard for me to imagine that this family suffered in silence for so many years having shut out such a tragic loss.“Nicky is fragmented, the scraps of his life scattered in pieces that until now no one has thought to gather together. We erased the accident at the beach, and along with the pain we effectively deleted Nicholas Paul Beard the person. We may not have meant to but we did, though not entirely.” Richard Beard was eleven years old when his nine year old brother Nicky drowned while his family vacationed by the sea in Cornwall, England. Forty years later he is trying to uncover the memory of that day, the story of who his brother was and confront his grief. He didn’t even know the date his brother died, so he begins his “inquest”. He is feeling the need to face that repressed grief, the fact that he saw his brother drown but never told anyone, haunting him with guilt. He talks to his mother and his brothers seeking their recollection of that day, their memories of his brother. He searches through his mother’s attic for remnants of his brother’s life - boarding school reports, things that belonged to his brother, his father’s papers and records for clues to what happened. He painfully returns to the beach where it happened, to the house the family was renting when the tragedy occurred, the very same house that his parents brought them back to right after the funeral. I couldn’t imagine that. This is a sad, difficult journey as Beard grapples with his own memories and those of his family which are sometimes at odds with his own remembrances. I don’t know for sure if he found the peace he was seeking, but I hope so. This is a beautifully written and moving memoir and I’m interested in perhaps reading some of his fiction.I received an advanced copy of Little, Brown and Company.
