Practical Process Research and Development

Review

"... A must reference on every process chemists (both the novice and the experienced practitioner) desk. This will be required reading by all new chemists, engineers and analysts in my department." --Sean T. Nugent, Searle Research and Development "Practical Process Research & Development is just that, practical... Especially enjoyable are author Neal G. Anderson's pithy 'tips'... Fun chemistry throughout." --CHEMICAL INNOVATION. June 2000 "The new volume by Dr. Anderson ranks with the very best on the subject covering almost all aspects of process research and development and scale up in an informative and readable manner. ...the many "Tips" given throughout the book are practical and informative and should be mandatory reading for all synthetic organic chemists, including those in research and discovery. ...could well become a standard text on the subject. Indeed, it is my recommendation that Process Chemistry departments throughout the industry buy two copies, one for themselves and one to help educate their colleagues in research/discovery. Many of the topics covered and the tips given in the book could also be of great use to anyone organizing organic chemistry practical courses for students. Perhaps the highest praise one can give this book is to say that Foreword by Barry Sharpless raises very high expectations and the book meets and at times exceed those expectations." --ORGANIC PROCESS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, Vol.4, No.5, 2000 "Following enthusiastic Forwards by Barry Sharpless and Jerry Moniot, each chapter of the book addresses commonly encountered aspects of large-scale synthesis. Drawing extensively from literature case studies for illustration, Anderson also sprinkles useful tips throughout the text, while his use of lists, tables, and charts aids in reinforcing key concepts. The text readily succeeds as a highly practical tour throughout the considerations of chemical scale-up. Newly minted chemists will find this a valuable introductory text, while veteran researchers will also glean much from Anderson's extensive experience. The book can easily be recommended as a reading for a graduate organic synthesis course. Medicinal chemists may find this trove of practical synthetic know-how quite useful in their drug discovery programs. Certainly all readers will better appreciate the challenges faced by process chemists in bringing a compound through development and commercialization." --Christopher R. Schmid, Senior Research Scientist, Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, JOURNAL OF MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY, 2001, Vol. 44, No.7 "In summary, we believe that every newcomer to the exciting field of process research and development should read this book, but also experienced process chemists and even academics will find it very useful and stimulating. As the language of stock analysts and brokers is very popular today, we recommend Practical Process Research and Development, by Neal G. Anderson, as a "strong buy" because this investment will pay off very quickly." --ANGEWANDTE CHEMIE, 2001, 40, No. 7. "...Filled with valuable insights and personal experience.... Dr. Anderson's book is indeed the best text on process development available to organic chemists. I have bought several for my group." --ADVANCED SYNTHESIS AND CATALYSIS, 2001, Oljan Repic, Director of Process R&D, Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research

This is *the* book for process chemistry. I'm new to the field, but everyone I've talked to recommends this as the optimal starting point for learning about how process chemists think. Anderson does a great job of taking the reader through each concept while integrating TONS of examples so it's clear that this isn't just theory. I've heard that some of the things Anderson touts as rules are actually a little more fluid in industry, but this is of course dependent on what stage your project is at. For example, solvent choices aren't as strict as the book would make you believe, but he still does a great job of explaining why certain solvents are preferred and ways to move toward these preferred solvent systems. While this book frequently discusses concepts at quite a high level, it's still endlessly entertaining to read. Pages blow by very quickly. The only thing that has been a little strange is when the same chemical process is used in different chapters as an example of multiple different concepts. It's given me deja vu repeatedly, although each different example typically revolves around different data points.

Very GOOD!

I am an inorganic/organometallic chemist by training. I took a job as a research chemist at a small metals based specialty chemical manufacturing company. After a few years in the R&D lab I took a role as the head of scale-up for our new line of organic and organometallic materials. This role involves process development and scale-up of a wide variety of materials. This area is not something that was discussed much in graduate school (something I think should change). Because my company is small with a large ne'er of products, this is a continual learn-as-I-go experience. This book, along with McConville's The Pilot Plant Real Boom, have become my go to resources for any and all problems related to process development. Both would make excellent texts for a graduate level course on process chemistry. The examples are based on the author's experience in the pharmaceutical field. However, I feel that the information contained in the book may be used for any sort of process development, from organic to materials. It's been extremely useful for me.I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the process chemistry field, from graybeards (as a handy reference tool) to newly minted chemists (as a detailed protocol for process development).

Imagine you have many "old-timers" giving out practical tips each from years of experience. That is not often happening. This book does exactly that.It addresses process R&D in pharmaceutical and / or fine chemicals industry, taking one from laboratory bench to pilot or production scale. The differences and difficulties in scale-up were clearly demonstrated and the solutions provided. It educates and helps a R&D chemist or process chemist to ANTICIPATE, AVOID and OVERCOME the potential problems in process development and scale-up, at the START or EARLY stage of the project. Supported by many examples, the best practices and solutions are presented at the detailed technical level: routes, reagents, solvents, water, running and optimizing reactions, workup, chiral synthesis, etc.The author highlighted a lot of key advice in "boxes" and allows a quick one-hour read of the best points.

I read this book cover to cover, come back to it many times. No other process chemistry book teaches better than this one. Highly recommended.

If you ever wonder how to run your reaction on a three tons scale, this is one of the books to go for. On the top it is also real fun to read.

I bought this book (or to be precise, its Kindle version) because I expected an exciting history of Franklin's fatal voyage. And I was disappointed. Rather little of this book actually deals with Franklin's voyage, and little of it could be called exciting. In fact this book isn't actually about Franklin's voyage; it's about his ship. That ship--called Erebus--had an extensive career before its fatal trip to Canada, and most of the book is about that earlier history. This part of the book is filled with details about its officers and men, and their friends, and their wives and their wives' friends, and thus with a lot of talk about obscure personalities that no one cares about. There is also quite a lot of blather about the author's own visits to places that were once visited by Erebus, such as--surprisingly--Tasmania, which is a long way from Canada. Some people might be interested in the author's travel experiences, but I was not. Finally in the last one-fourth of the book we come to Franklin's voyage. But then there isn't much to be said about it, because there are no logbooks and so little is known. Instead we have a review of the many voyages that went in search, first with the idea of rescue, and later just to find out what happened. This is the most interesting part of the book, but there isn't much that isn't already well-known and familiar. And although the prose is fluent, it seems superficial, and lacking in incisive detail.Readers are warned that if you get the Kindle version, the maps are too small to be of any use.

Great well researched historic mystery novel. Loved it switching from 1800s to current with detail factual research

Over the years, I’ve read several books that involved the 19th century Franklin Expedition and the succeeding efforts to discover its fate. Some have been non-fiction accounts and others fictionalized accounts (The Terror, by Dan Simmons and The Surfacing, by Cormac James to name two). Having done so, I was familiar with the background story and the travails faced by the arctic explorers of the era. This work is a little bit different, because it doesn’t focus on the Franklin Expedition, but upon the flagship of that expedition, the HMS Erebus. It describes the work done to convert it into a polar exploration vessel and then spends a majority of its pages describing its first and most successful voyage, the Ross “discovery” and exploration of the waters surrounding the continent of Antarctica. It then proceeds to the Franklin Expedition and the subsequent efforts made to find and rescue its participants. It culminates with the recent discovery of the sunken vessel. The author of this book is Michael Palin, a renowned member of the British comedy troupe, Monty Python. It was a pleasant surprise to find that Palin is a very good writer. The book is well researched and presented. Palin intersperses the history with vignettes concerning his visits to many of the ports visited by Erebus, including its final resting place. All in all, a very commendable piece of work and entertaining as well.

Just about to close out another good year of reading and I think I can safely conclude this was my favorite read overall of 2018.It made a great companion to my watching of "The Terror" miniseries earlier this year.Palin's writing is entertaining, engaging, knowledgeable, and personal.Part biography of a ship, part narrative of British exploits at the poles in the 19th century, and part personal travelogue, Palin draws on and synthesizes a wealth of literature on the HMS Erebus's role in the successful Ross and doomed Franklin expeditions, brought to life with a generous use of first-person accounts from memoirs and personal letters. What really separates this book from others about the Erebus or the Franklin expedition is the deeply personal connection that Palin has to many of the locales described in the book, given his own extensive travels, and an empathy for the noted explorers, the ordinary seaman, and the families of the participants, as well as absolutely fantastic descriptions of the places.I listened to the audiobook and Palin's narration is wonderful.Definitely adding to my personal library.Highly Recommended.

Palin is a student of Arctic and Antarctic exploration in the 19th century. There is history of north and south polar exploration with emphasis on background of successive Erebus skippers James Clark Ross and John Franklin as well as background and development of the bomb class ships of the era. He provides insights into the development of magnetic navigation based on the astronomy of Gauss and John Herschel. The book documents attempts at finding the South magnetic pole and Northwest Passage culminating in loss of the Erebus and companion ship Terror in a third Arctic expedition in 1846. As we now know, neither goal was achieved, but many useful discoveries were made. Land and ice field discoveries in Antarctica set the stage for the better known expeditions of Scott and Amundsen. The Shackleton expedition is not mentioned. The book culminates in the poignant efforts to find out what happened. With notebooks found years after disappearance, bodies discovered in 1984, and the remains of the Erebus and Terror in 2014 and 2016 respectively. It’s personalized with the lives of the government officials, botanists and sailors as well as Jane Franklin, wife of the lost captain, responsible for perpetuating his memory. It’s the first history I’ve read in a long time that tells me 100% that I didn’t know beforehand. Kudos to author Palin for well written research.

This ships' story is well researched, compassionately told, and an exciting read. You will be taken back to the favorite book of your youth and once again be on the river or at sea. Michael Palin has bought the ship to life and basically sits the reader down and carefully and thoroughly tells the story.Very well done. Yes, it's that good.

I've had this on my son's wish list for probably 2 years but nobody had bought it so I finally did, right after his 4th birthday. I knew I wanted it and it's such a good price, I should have bought it right away! I love how casual it is and I love the interview questions to ask your child each year. It has a pocket for each year as well to put a few keepsakes/art works from that year as well as a place for a picture. I tried to fill out things from his first 3 birthdays from memory but it would have been better if I'd had it to start 3 years ago. I'd highly recommend it to everyone, even if you've already missed the first few years.

This book is perfect for me! I am not interested in scrapbooking, but have a little mommy guilt about not putting together something cute and fun for my daughter to have when she is older. If 7 year-old-girls compare scrapbooks, my daughter is destined to wonder why her momma didn't deliver a scrapbook.Book description: This book has fill in the blank and short essay questions for each year. The questions are sure to create lots of memories for you as a parent. The book is intended to cover years 1-18 and there is a final page for parents to write a note to end the book.Types of pages:Photo pages - you'll need something to attach the pictures (like double stick tapeBirthday pages - one page for each birthday with questions for parent to answer about the day of birthdayInterview pages - once your baby can communicate, these Q&A pages will create fun moments for parent-child.Time Capsule pockets - with suggestions of what to put in the pocketBonus pages - fun activity pages which can capture your child's imagination or perception of the worldNice features:Spiral binding - If I add keepsakes, the binding will open to accommodate.Elastic strap - To keep the book closedQuality paper - Nice paper - ink won't bleed throughGender neutral colors - orange / green / white (think pumpkin and forest green)Something that might not be for everyone:On some of the interviews, there is a question of "what are your thoughts about God". This might bother some people, but I think it could be an interesting question even if you are not raising your child with a belief in God - they are bound to have friends who talk about church, God, etc. - so this is an opportunity to have a discussion about that topic.Something that might bother general consumers:There is definitely an ink (or paper) odor; I expect the odor will dissipate over time. The book is made in China.

I bought 3 My Baby Book from the same line (https://amzn.to/2GWT2WG) + 3 of this Your Birthday Book! This journal is great for someone who is looking for simple, clean, minimalist type journal.[Pro]- Covers from 1-18 years (few pages/year)- LOVE the "Time Capsule" page pockets to store cards and other keepsakes- Gender neutral- Affordable $10[Cons]Haven't found any cons yet![Tips]Highly recommend using instax camera (https://amzn.to/2GXiN9B instant camera that prints out on the spot) so you can make sure you have pictures each year.(Let's face it, who has time to print pictures these days?)Great journal for minimalist.

I love the concept and many aspects of this book but there are some things that I would definitely change if I was making this book:-Years 1-3 are all in the same section with only 1 pocket. The pocket is bulging because I wanted to put a handprint, birthday invitation, string for child's height, and a few other odds and ends in this pocket and there is barely enough room. Also, to keep the 3 ages from being all tangled up together, I had to separate them with envelopes for each age.-There is only one interview page for ages 2 and 3. It says on the interview page that it is intended for age 3 but can be used at age 2 depending on how verbal the child is. My son is extremely verbal and answered all of the questions at age 2 and I was glad I had the foresight to make a photocopy ahead of time so that I also have a page for age 3. It would have been nice to have the interview questions for both ages and people could just not answer all of them at age 2 if their child was not verbal yet.-One of the questions each year is "who is the last person you kissed". I don't know that my kid wants to answer that in an interview up through age 18. It could produce funny and cute responses in the younger ages but, if I was the child, I would have wanted a different annual question in place of this one.-In age 15 they have a spot where the parent answers questions about how things were when they were 15. One of the question is "when I (the parent) was 15, "hooking up" meant...." and then the child is supposed to answer at age 15 "hooking up means...". Really? Is that an appropriate question for this book? Does this REALLY need to be in this book? Do I really want to put what hooking up meant when I was 15? Do I really want to know what hooking up means for my child at 15? Even if it's a good discussion to have with a child, this is not the place for it and it doesn't need to be in this book. I'm glad it's the bottom question. Maybe I can cover it up with something decorative before my child ever sees it.-The "frames" (printed onto the page) for the pictures each year are very small and the sizes are not standard or uniform sizes. I had to order a wallet size photo of the photo I wanted to use and it still did not fit perfectly without cutting off some of the image that I wanted to keep so I just taped it on without cutting it down but it does bother me that it doesn't fit into the "frame"

Amazon.com Review

The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done. Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.

From the Back Cover

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum" argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining, "The Inmates Are Running the Asylum" uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

While I agree with many things Alan Cooper says about the challenges of designing user friendly technologies for normal end users, I think his attitude is a bit pessimistic about how engineers and programmers design technologies that are yet to come... I think it is better to encourage Universities and Colleges to require a certain amount of technical support and customer support courses in additional to standard social sciences courses required for a typical science major for Engineering and computer science students to graduate... This should also be required for any student who hopes to get into any field of study where work in this field would affect end users of products and services rendered to them. Engineers and Technical workers need to take responsibility for their work and help end users with their products. Furthermore, licensing for Engineers and Technical workers should not only require ability to design products and technologies (i.e. traditional assessment materials), but also require ability to communicate effectively with end users and support their products and technologies. This might be a great book for young students in high school and college who want to study Engineering, IT Services, Computer Sciences or related fields.

Cooper has done a good job of pointing out common problems in software design. The book is well written, with interesting examples and anecdotes to illustrate the author's points. While most of the book focuses on "off the shelf" products, I think the author's arguments are even more relevant to custom software development. If you already believe that software is poorly designed, this book is unlikely to be a revalation to you. It will, however, give you some ammunition to use in discussions with "apologists".I agree with the earlier reviewer, who said that the people most needing to read it probably won't. This would seem to be a great book for development managers and purchasers of software, but I think the only people likely to read the whole thing are professional developers.I have two criticisms of the book (for which I give it 4 out of 5 stars): too often it comes across as an advertisement for the author's company; and I would have appreciated more "how-to" information. To this latter point, the author himself says in his preface that he had intended to write a "how-to" book, but was talked into writing a "business case" book instead. I hope that he will soon follow up this effort with the planned "how-to" book.A final question -- what is with these 1 star reviews? I've read a few of them now, for different books, and I have to question whether the reviewer has even read the book. If so, they seem to have completely missed the point. At the very least, if giving a 1 star review, please provide some detailed criticisms so I can decide whether I am likely to share your opinion.

From a software engineer's perspective, this book is fairly on point. However, it does come off a bit as an extended personal rant against engineers involved in the design of devices and systems the author has interacted with and only provides perfunctory guidance on how to improve things. Suggested read from an HCI professor, it makes a point but isn't as informative as one would hope.

This was a textbook for my Interaction Design class, but the ideas are valid in boat loads of circumstances. I highly recommend it to everyone, in fact, not just programmers and designers. While you're at it, be sure to pick up The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less, which solidifies his ideas from the consumer side of things.I'm a junior high teacher by trade, so I'm going to particularly recommend it to teachers. Students, just like tech consumers, come in a variety of levels of understanding. One of the biggest challenges is to cater a lesson to smart students, slow students, and all the students in between. Teachers, like programmers, like all of us, tend to assume that others' experience is similar to their own, so they plan with themselves in mind. This book helps explain how to break out of that mentality and design for everyone.

I like Alan Cooper. He is entertaining, thoughtful and has numerous amusing anecdotes and analogies. He is a "voice sounding in the wilderness" in the software community about usability. Unfortunately, I think his point is lost somewhat in the marketing message and sensationalism of this book. Who is the book written for - the software developer or the frustrated user? The first chapter sounds like a Luddite rebellion against computers. It is hard to imagine the person writing that chapter as a computer professional. Using the analogy of a secretary who doesn't know how to save files to a folder as an example of poor design is blaming the programmer for poor training. True, software is often developed by programmers who barely get real requirements, develop in a vacuum and then force feed the end result to the user. And ironically, Alan Cooper invented Visual Basic, which ushered in Rapid Application Development (RAD) programming (good!) but adds the tendency for quick prototype demos to get shipped as "Version 1.0" because the CEO or CIO says,"hey it works now" (bad!).These shortcomings are not solved by adding a layer of another design person partially disconnected from the user, or making the screen prettier. It is by adapting the Extreme Programming/Agile programming methods of including the user in everything from design to testing, so the software reflects how the user does business.I still liked the book, just not clear on the message.
