Would have liked more recipes to use throw away parts of food. This barely gets into practical use. Disappointed the book isn't more like the sample pages.

My canning repertoire has needed some pizazz for awhile and this book does not disappoint! My favorite part is the section dedicated to green tomatoes. Non-canners need not shy away as there are many recipes that don't involve canning or additional kitchen equipment. I think this book is a must have for anyone with a garden, CSA subscription or is a frequenter of farmers markets.

I am a long time food preserver and I found this book late in the season this year as i wanted some new inspiration for next. It caught my attention for its emphasis on using the whole plant. That is something I want to do more of and bought this with that in mind. I am inspired and looking forward to using this book more next season as I find the recipes inventive and appealing. I have only made the green tomato enchilada sauce so far and already have enjoyed several jars of it and worried I didn't make enough for this year. It's really delicious, so I am looking forward to making more of these creative and interesting new twists on old favorites, with plenty of new to me recipes to keep me interested.

Love this book- covers the basics but also really creative recipe including recipes to use the products you’ve preserved. Love the root to core concept too. This is a must have for anyone who loves to can. Beautifully illustrated- a work of art!

Good tips and recipes for canning and preserving

The recipes were too exotic for my taste. I only tried one recipe but it did turn out well.

I read and started doing some canning just to see if I could get the hang of canning. This book was a great help, now I can.

Great read. Cant wait for garden

This book is not for the out-of-towner planning a weekend, or even a week-long trip. New York is too big, and there are so many 'mandatory' things you should see. But this is definitely a book that should turn many a New Yorker into a weekend tourist. The problem with living in New York is that life is permanently set to warp-speed. The present and the very near future are all anyone can think of, and that other great foundation of New York (in addition to its literal bedrock)--its history--is often forgotten. This is a shame, as what the city has been to the many people who have come to it to realize their dreams is a great part of the place's magic. Kevin Walsh has done a terrific job of documenting the surviving islands of that history that the city was simply too busy (or forgot) to tear down.New Yorkers: buy this book, clear your calendar, and take a couple of days, or even an afternoon, discovering the city that you've never really noticed. You'll never think of New York the same way.

For a sightseeing tour guide as I am, this book is a real jewel, something to treasure and cherish, to read over and over again. For the everyday New Yorker is a way to discover or rediscover the city and all its hidden jewels.Just read, follow the maps and enjoy the show.

a wonderful book. I was born and raised in n.y.c. have always been interested in n.y.c. history. this book covers what I would call neighborhood history. covering highly localized places of interest. it is in encyclopedic format. it is a large book and well worth the minor investment.if you have ever lived in n.y.c. and enjoyed it's history 'forgotten new york' should be of great interest to you. the author also created the website this website is also worth checking out.

I found out about this book through the author's extensive website. I'm not even from New York and I found it to be really interesting, and I'd definitely take the book with me if I were ever to visit town. Of course, this is just a sampling of what this author is capable of - the website is amazing, and in many ways I hope that some of the material from the site could make a commpanion volume. Great work from everyone involved.

A fascinating and intimate glimpse of the side of a city's history you won't find in your run o' the mill guidebooks. Instead, the reader is treated to a far more esoteric and interesting overview of the city and its long and varied history. This is essential reading for any tourist with an interest in the unique and is as equally interesting to someone who has never been there and to those who have lived there their entire lives.

We travel to NYC quite a bit and wanted something to use, as a guide, to find places that might be 'off the beaten' path... This book is perfect for us! Packed with great information and photographs~ we recommend it for anyone wanting to discover parts of NY you didn't know were there!

I had gotten the impression from a few of the earlier reviewers that this book was going to be disappointing; a pale shadow of the extensive website that Mr. Walsh has maintained for some years. But when I received my copy I got a pleasant surprise: "Forgotten New York: Views of a Lost Metropolis" is not a coffee-table version of the website (at which I am a sometime and appreciative visitor); rather it is a way to get up from your coffee table, get out the door and actually SEE the wonders that Kevin has found for us.I would compare and contrast this book with another invaluable work, White & Willensky's AIA (American Institute of Architects) Guide to New York City, which revolutionized the appreciation of New York structures (and boosted historic preservation at the same time). The AIA guide shows us buildings of architectural significance, briefly details their history and tells us how to get to them to see for ourselves. By contrast, Forgotten New York tells us how to find all the OTHER interesting little details of New York City's past that are right under our noses.I sympathize with those who wish this book went into more depth in its individual subjects; I hope that books to come may detail this or that neighborhood or topic, but the logic of this guidebook (for that's what it is) is compelling: if I want to find out what Brooklyn, say, was like in the 1930s, I can curl up with a book and read the text and enjoy the pictures, for I have no other choice except for a Time Machine BUT if I want to SEE (and touch, and photograph) survivals of Brooklyn FROM the 1930s, this book "takes me by the hand" and leads me to go and see them for myself.

Even though I lived a large portion of my life in New York, I did not know the interesting historical stories behind the many buildings and places discussed in this book. I bought the book out of curiosity and when I received it I immediately went to the section about Brooklyn, which is where I grew up. It's fascinating reading and I'm anxious to now read about Manhattan, where I worked for many years. I recommend this book highly. It's well written and very interesting.

Euripides is the tragic author who rings most familiar to modern ears. While Aeschylus is not far removed from the origins of tragedy in Dionysian rituals, the constant theme of Euripides is the effort we must make to sustain civilization and a reasonable life within it against the entropic forces which always threaten its dissolution. The influence of Socrates is not hard to discern. The gods are now believed in because they must be the enforcers of moral law. Men and women ought to resist unreasonable emotional urges or face tragic consequences. The single worst fate man can encounter is the loss of his reason. That tragedy made this turn, the gods being pushed off stage and made objects of belief instead of necessity, the characters depicting real people instead of irrational forces of nature and the warm embrace of reason and everything civilized—these are all marks of progress towards a freer and happier human condition. Euripides should be celebrated as a herald of enlightenment thinking. And, of course, the plots themselves have their own interest and merit. All college students should be exposed to Greek civilization and Euripides, humanizing the Socratic revolution by incorporating it into the tragic tradition, is an excellent vehicle to introduce it. This translation, while some fifty years old, reads like modern English and can still be used at the collegiate level. Highly recommended.

I like modern, readable translations and these are great. There are some very nice and helpful footnotes provided which were very much appreciated. I teach Ancient Philosophy, among other topics, and I was very happy with these translations of profound works of art. Medea, for instance, is a truly alarming and impressive creation.

thanks

Love Euripides. It's a decent translation.

Medea and Other Plays is a collection of plays: Medea, Hippolytus, Electra, and Helen. It begins with Medea, whose husband has married the daughter of Creon, the king. Medea and her childrean are banished from the land, so Medea concocts a plot to kill the king, her husband, his new wife, and the children in revenge against her spouse. She then tricks the daughter of creon into wearing cursed robes so htat she is killed, and the king with her, and then she kills her children, much to her husband's dismay. Then the next book is Hippolytus. Hippolytus begins with the banished king of Athens and his illegitimate son Hippolytus, who is not favorable towards women, so he garners the hate of Aphrodite, who concocts a plot against him. A womam claims to love him, and in secret wants to see him, but he exclaims to the world the evils of women, and with her secret out, she hangs herself. Then the king of Athens returns and thinks his son is guilty and so allows him to be punished by Poseidon, but later finds this is not true, so Hippolytus is freed, and he forgives his father before he dies. The 3rd book is Electra, the daughter of Agamemmnon and Clymnestra, who marries a poor farmer by order. The son, Orestes, was also sent away but soon returns after he is grown, and ends up staying with the farmer. Orestes then embarks to revenge his fathers death, and kills Clymnestra and her lover Aegisthus. The 4th and final book is Helen, in which Helen fears that Menelaus didnt return safely from Troy, only to meet him in person at a later date. Then they must escape from Egypt where they are, which they do by tricking Theoclymenus into giving them a boat. These 4 greek plays are excellentlly written, Euripides, afterall, was one of the greatest greek playwriters of all time, and his plays are a wonderful collection of stories.James Morwood translates them very well, so that they are fluid and easy to understand. The book is slightly over 200 pages and is an easy and enjoyable read.It is a recommendable book to anyone looking to get a copy of these plays or any greek play.

Outstanding edition

The book was awesome to read and also very easy to understand. I really enjoyed this book. If your looking to read great book on Greek tragedies then this is the book for you.

I was pleasantly surprised when I was reading "Medea". About halfway through the play, I realized that the themes of revenge, depression, and female empowerment are still relevant. Infidelity and vengeance are things witnessed everyday: in movies, in the news, maybe even in our own lives. This string of themes proves further that human kind hasn't changed too much. Though I did have some problems with the plot and some of the overdramatics. Medea revealed to the audience a vulnerable, passionate woman who has a bit of a drama problem and needs just a little too much attention. I think any reader can appreciate the pain she suffered and the disgusting way people in power dealt with her. But is there a line being far over-stepped by killing one's own children just to make a man feel guilty?Though there is some undeniable hyperbole, it is a story a reader or audience member can empathize, and is totally plausible in a modern setting.

Review

"[T]he challenge that existing economic orthodoxy may find most disconcerting is Imperfect Knowledge Economics (IKE), the name of a path-breaking recent book."---Anatole Kaletsky, The Times". . . sets out an alternative approach to prediction, in which the forecaster recognizes that his model will inevitably be less than perfect." (The Economist)"A new book ... coins the phrase "imperfect knowledge economics" to describe this world of fundamental uncertainty." (Finanical Times)"A new conceptual framework--Imperfect Knowledge Economics (IKE)--provides the rationale for policy intervention in asset markets, and also has important implications for how regulators should measure and manage systemic financial risk."---Edmund Phelps, Guardian.co.uk, "This marvelous book by Frydman and Goldberg documents . . . invaluable insights of the 'early modern' theory of capitalism that were lost when the profession endorsed rational expectations equilibrium. . . . Happily for me and, I believe, for the profession of economics, this deeply original and important book gives signs of bringing us back on track―on a road toward an economics possessing a genuine microfoundation and at the same time a capacity to illuminate some of the many aspects of the modern economy that the rational expectations approach cannot by its nature explain."―from the foreword by Edmund S. Phelps, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in economics"Anyone who has ever studied markets for financial assets such as currencies knows that it is very difficult to explain, much less predict, short to medium term fluctuations. In their innovative new work, Imperfect Knowledge Economics, Roman Frydman and Michael Goldberg make a strong case that it would be particularly helpful to improve our understanding of how financial markets process new knowledge and information. In addition, the book offers a useful guide to understanding existing empirical exchange rate models."―Kenneth Rogoff, Harvard University"The centrality of expectations in understanding economic fluctuations has long been recognized, but their formation has not been adequately described. The rational expectation hypothesis was a bold and ingenious attempt, but it has proved empirically very far from satisfactory, most strikingly, in the field of foreign exchange markets, where the good documentation makes the failure easier to establish. Frydman and Goldberg open new doors by a more realistic understanding of the process of forming expectations; by recognizing that universal rules are intrinsically impossible, they exhibit a more creative understanding of the recent history of foreign exchange spot and futures markets."―Kenneth J. Arrow, Nobel Prize-winning economist"If you are looking for a way to escape from the Procrustean bed of rational expectations equilibrium―and, if you pay attention to real-world data, you should be―try reading this imaginative and intelligent book. It will amply repay your efforts."―Alan S. Blinder, Princeton University"If you have been puzzled by the difficulty of reconciling uncertainty with the equilibrium models that economists use to explain market outcomes, this is the right book to read and reread. It launches a new approach, Imperfect Knowledge Economics, which highlights the long-recognized failure of prespecified general equilibrium modeling to account for the behavior of agents under changing conditions. Frydman and Goldberg are thus proposing models that are able to generate robust qualitative predictions, leading to a better understanding of short- and long-term swings in economic variables. In macroeconomics, there will undoubtedly be a 'before' and 'after' this book."―Jean-Paul Fitoussi, president, l'Observatoire français des conjonctures économiques, Paris"The record of contemporary economics in explaining the behavior of exchange rates is a sorry one. Frydman and Goldberg make the foreign exchange rate problem the particular object of a searching critique of current macroeconomics and use it also as the vehicle for demonstrating how they would break its methodological 'stranglehold.' Their own alternative, imperfect knowledge economics, is systematically worked out and persuasively argued. It is my hope that the book will be widely read and debated."―Axel Leijonhufvud, UCLA and the University of Trento

From the Inside Flap

"This marvelous book by Frydman and Goldberg documents . . . invaluable insights of the 'early modern' theory of capitalism that were lost when the profession endorsed rational expectations equilibrium. . . . Happily for me and, I believe, for the profession of economics, this deeply original and important book gives signs of bringing us back on track--on a road toward an economics possessing a genuine microfoundation and at the same time a capacity to illuminate some of the many aspects of the modern economy that the rational expectations approach cannot by its nature explain."--from the foreword by Edmund S. Phelps, winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in economics"Anyone who has ever studied markets for financial assets such as currencies knows that it is very difficult to explain, much less predict, short to medium term fluctuations. While this book requires a modest mathematical background, it is critical to understanding how markets work and how academic economists have resisted critical changes to their fallen field. This book will prove to be a classic once advocates of Rational Expectations are swept away. For those of you who have seen "The Inside Job" (a wonderful film), you might enjoy reading about the most critical alternative to the Rational Expectations Hypothesis. Mark my words: Professor Roman Frydman will have the last laugh.

"Imperfect Knowledge Economics" has as its central tenet that most modern economic models are flawed because they are based on the idea that people always act "rationally" (i.e. we always have perfect information, we never suffer from external constraints, and our goals are always to maximize economic value). The book then proposes a new way to think about economics, suggesting that because people act as people the best that economists can do is to make vague general predictions about the future.Of course, to any non-economist who pays any attention to economic forecasts, all of this is met with a resounding "DUH". The one nice thing about this book is that it hopefully will be read by other economists, and get them to finally realize what most of us have already understood for quite a while, that economists are often the last ones to actually understand what *people* will be thinking, feeling and doing - and of course *people* are ultimately the driving force behind economic markets. (For example: witness how long it took for economists to start saying the word "recession" during this spring of 2008. It turns out that spending data show that consumers knew that poor economic times were coming all the back in the late fall of 2007. Somehow the economists were the last ones to figure this out.)Probably interesting if you are an economist, or you need to deal with economists on a regular basis (certainly if you need to *argue* with an economist). However other than that, its not going to be all that useful for the rest of us as we already know, understand, and have seen the authors' main points for quite a long time.
