This is an interesting slice of life about the nursing profession, written by one of its own.Keep writing. We really enjoyed this book.

Save your money, save your time. Pass this one by. The stories themselves are mildly interesting but the book is so poorly written and edited that it is almost unreadable. It is full of misspellings, confused homophones, random capitalization, run-on sentences, and missing and misused punctuation. Every story could be cut by 1/4 to 1/3 without losing anything. Many self-published books suffer from poor editing but few suffer this much.

Reading this book reminds me of texting with my friend who uses speech to text exclusively. Theres misused homophones everywere, major grammar issues, missing punctuation and pretty much every story reads like someone stream of conciousness direct speech to texting you their experience.

I read medical nonfiction books every chance I can get. I especially enjoyed the author's gritty writing style. Truth is stranger than fiction. Fascinating read!

Great travel book as you can jump in and out of the stories. Writes like he is talking to a friend.

Stories all very interesting and well written; most of my 25 years in nursing have been in the Emergency Department. Reading this book was like sitting back and swapping tales of past experiences. Something ER nurses love to do.

An outstanding biography of a fascinating person. . . . Thomas Meagher (pronounced Mar) was born in Ireland of a family of means in the context of the times. But his life led him to become a revolutionary. He and his father ( a prominent Irish leader) went separate ways. The younger Meagher allied with protestors of the British Empire. He was an agitator and took a role of working against the British. His reward? He was sent in exile to Australia. There, he struggled with other prisoners under harsh circumstances. And then? He escaped! And then went to the United States. . . .In the United States, he began a new life. His apogee was when he formed an Irish Brigade as a unit in the Civil War. This was a famous and fearsome unit, good in combat. However, over time, its effectiveness diminished with casualties. But Meagher was well reputed as its leader. After the war? Meagher sought financial security. His efforts took him to Montana, where he became a political leader in a complex and dangerous context. His final days may have been a result of this context. . . .A nice work on a person who played a role in different countries. Much detail on a fascinating character. . . .

There are some books that are so well written, that bring the people and the time in which they live so brilliantly, that illumine so many events and issues, that help you, in short, to better understand our world and how it was formed, that you simply want to grab your friends and tell them in your most impassioned voice,"You must read this book." And while I have grabbed no friends, I have told several how absolutely splendid this book is. The response, in every case, has been disinterest. Thomas Francis Meagher? Who is he? Why haven't I heard of him before? This is a case where one needs to trust the author. Timothy Egan is one of our finest nonfiction writers, and while a couple of his books - especially his outstanding book on the Dust Bowl disaster of the 1930s - are on topics of broad interest, he sometimes has taken up subjects things we need to know about rather than think we want to know. And such is this book about Thomas Francis Meagher. Although he died relatively young, Meagher's live sweeps through some of the key events in Irish and American history. Born into a relatively well-to-do family in Ireland - something of a miracle given the extreme oppression of the Irish by the English, where extreme resistance to English rule could lead to death or being sold into slavery in either the Caribbean or the southern Colonies. The first chapter, on the history of the subjugation and cruel and systematic abuse of the Irish by the British, is a marvel of compressed history. There is not a paragraph that isn't fascinating, while the book lays out the world into which Meagher was born. While many of the priests who were his teachers and his parents cautioned patience in the face of British occupation - which meant lesser British lords living on lands that had previously belonged to the Irish who eked out lives in enforced poverty, Meagher constantly asked why the Irish put up with it. And it is his refusal to tolerate what he saw as injustice that drove his life.Every section of this book details a new chapter in Meagher's life, which also happens to be a chapter in the life of the place in which he lives. After first showing his resistance to English rule and his violent opposition to it, we see him in the United States, where the almost equally vexing treatment of the Irish by American immigrants who had established themselves in the country a bit earlier than these Irish newcomers. Egan's attempt to gain respect comes together with his repudiation of Southern slavery is the book's longest section - and the one that will be of the greatest general interest (if one of my other friends asks, I'll simply tell them that it is a book on one of the Civil War's most colorful military leaders) - tells of Meagher's not insubstantial role in the American Civil War, where he became commander of the famed Irish Brigade, which brought a degree of respect and acceptance they had not achieved before. Not that all Americans accepted the Irish overnight, but American's have always respected its war heroes, and now there were Irish ones. The final chapter of Meagher's life shows him and his wife going to North Dakota - which was far wilder and more rustic than when Teddy Roosevelt visited it a couple of decades later - as governor of the area. If one sees Meagher as a Quixote, always tilting against windmills, the vigilantism in the territory was more than he could oppose, and it might possibly have led to his mysterious death only a couple of years after the end of the Civil War. The book begins with the event. Meagher on the deck of a paddle boat at the head waters of the Missouri. He falls off the deck of the boat ad drowns. It is a mystery that has never been solved, though Egan takes a gallant and fairly convincing stab at resolving it.But the sheer scope of the story of Meagher, who was renowned for his ability to sway his fellows and in a land where great oratory made people the equivalent of today's rock stars (albeit, without the sex, drugs, or rock and roll, though with all the fame, celebrity, and packed houses where they spoke), is truly epic. Meagher stood out as one of the great public speakers of the age, and his heroism on the battlefield makes him a major, if peripheral figure in that conflict. But the genius of this books is how much it makes us understand so many things. The Irish Question. Resistance to English rule. Migration to America. The abuse of the Irish in the United States. The reasons why many went to war against the South. The Question of Slavery. The Civil War itself, along with many of its greatest battles. The end of the War. Western expansion. And we finally learn just how wild the wild west could be. All these aspects of Irish and American life are masterfully told, in a prose that carries us easily from one page to the next.If you read this book, it is possible that you will read a better one in the coming year. Possible, but not likely. I doubt that the book will garner Mr. Egan another National Book Award. Members of the award committee are apt to react as I did when I first had the opportunity to read this: Thomas Francis who? But while the book most definitely tells the story of one of the great Irish and Irish-American political activists, it also tells the stories of Ireland and America itself, and reveals things about both countries that most readers - and certainly this reader - had not previously known or understood. This is very likely going to stand as one of my favorite books of 2016 and I could, I would rush up to you in person and say straight to your face, "You must read this book." So do it.

I got this book on the recommendation of my mother; who ultimately wants to read it. I had no familiarity with Thomas Meagher, but the story, written by Egan is an easy read and very fluid. The first quarter of the book focuses on Meagher and his role in seeking to enlist people in the Irish Confederation. Egan does a really good job of discussing the oratory style of Meagher, in particular his accent, arousing speeches to the people, especially against the context of famine that was decimating the population. There are also really pleasant historical sidebars (not really a sidebar, but inclusion in the story?) of other particulars, such as the out migration of the Irish to Australia and Canada, elements that were supported by the British Crown. The death toll of the emigrants to the U.S., almost 1 in 5, is a staggering number that is seldom discussed. There is also background information regarding others as well throughout the story, giving insight into those who worked in the Irish Confederation, and throughout New York at various times.Meagher’s trip to Tasmania is also discussed, which, I had always been curious about the length of time it would take to get that far away to the penal colony (120 days). Perhaps there is a bit of irony in that the transport actually fed them and they wore no shackles. The time in Tasmania actually seems a bit like a resort, even if it was away from their homeland of Ireland. Meagher eventually leaves, but his note to his warden/parole oversight person is a bit priceless, he basically sent a same-day message that let them know he was heading out. I mention this message because it gives further insight into the type of character Meagher was and is throughout the book. While in the U.S., Meagher is highly regarded by those who knew him from Ireland. Eventually, Meagher becomes a union general and fights in the Civil War, specifically leading the Irish Brigade. Meagher’s status remained while in the U.S., especially as he was placed in a bit of a position to use it to recruit new troops; even though the initial causalities weighed heavily on Meagher. There is also really interesting insight into the Irish’s perception of fighting to free slaves; as that is one of the objections that is raised by many of the Irish when drafted or paid to fight for the Union. At the same time, Meagher’s own battle in championing for his men, especially in the area of promotion and recognition are addressed. Overall, there are some political elements from the Civil War that are often excluded that are brought into the picture. The drafting of the Irish, and the ensuing riots that lashed out at African Americans are also another historical element that are seldom discussed or addressed. The Civil War portion takes up the largest chunk of the book, but Meagher’s time in Montana is discussed for about 50-60 pages. During this time Meagher found himself at odds with vigilantes who were opposed to his authority, which was 2nd highest office in Montana, as a commission from Johnson. Meagher worked to continue to instill law in Montana, even at a time when it was pretty minimally populated and had a high leaning towards an old west type of rule.Overall, the book is really good, a quick read, and portrays the situation realistic with outside information into the stories of the time that are often overlooked. I’d really recommend it, and it gives a new insight into the Civil War, especially as it addresses internal conflict within the Union and between various groups.

I chose this book because I love animalsand I never tire of true animal stories. I was not disappointed, Dr. Jan has some stories to tell.He attended vet school in the Netherlands and moved, to the US to practice in rural Michigan. His wife is American, they met when he came to America as an exchange student. at age 18 . Dr Jon has practiced in rural Michigan for over 50 years. Many people may remember him from tv and the NationalGeographic program. His stories are sometimes funny, sometimes sadbut always interesting. Many of his stories start with, " I put my arm up theanimal's butt." Dr. Jon has heart and it shows in his relationships and hishumane way of dealing with animals, both large farm animals and small pets.

Dr Pol doesn't mess with words, he tells it as it is. Life is not fair, nor is it easy and being a large animal vet is hard work and requires difficult decisions. This is not like his show, instead it is an inside look to his thoughts and how he does his job.I enjoyed reading his blunt and realistic thoughts and ideas. Indeed there are some funny stories as well as some tough stories that hit close to home. I highly recommend this book, but caution the reader that this is real life and death country vet life. Don't expect a gentle and soft life, expect reality.

I watch The Incredible Dr. Pol show all the time, and I thought it would be interesting to read his story. I learned lots of facts I didn't know about both small and large animals and watching the show helped to understand some of the animal conditions described in the book. I learned some interesting facts like dogs have many more blood types than humans, and it is rare for cows to have twins. What I liked most about the book though, was not the stories about the animals, but the stories about Dr. Pol and his family.Learning about how Dr. Pol grew up during WWII in Europe was quite interesting. He came here from the Netherlands and followed the American Dream. Dr. Pol came to America as an exchange student and stayed for a lifetime. He got married, started his own business in his garage with his wife, and they've worked side by side ever since. Now over 40 years later, he truly is living the American Dream. Many of his qualities remind me of my grandfather: Never be afraid of hard work, never give up, find a job you love; treat others as you want to be treated (even animals), stay grounded, and it's great to be young at heart. If you are interested in animals or if you like reading about hard working people who came to America and became a success story, this book is worth the read.

At first I was leary about getting this book. I love the show The Incredible Dr. Pol so much that I was worried that the book might be done by some ghost writer and I wouldn't like it. I just couldn't figure out how Dr. Pol would have time to write a book. I was greatly surprised. Read this book is like what I would imagine an evening with Dr Pol must be like. Him telling you all about his life as a vet. To me even though I don't know the Pol's it was like sitting down with an old friend. The book has great stories and commentary and I loved it. My only complaint is the book is too short. lol. If you watch the show, you won't be disappointed, if you don't watch the show, you won't be disappointed. I feel that most people will love this book.

I stumbled upon this book due to my previous book interests and it wasn’t until I started reading that I realized he was on a TV show. After reading the book, I would love to watch the show since I quite enjoyed the book. It was interesting, informative, and entertaining. It flowed well and never seemed to lag. It was a great veterinary documentary although my favorite is still James Herriot. I really enjoyed this book though and was disappointed when I read through it so fast because the stories were all so interesting!Recommend for:Ages 7+Animal loversVeterinary field interestsFarming interests

Dr. Pol's son Charles summed it up well: like a conversation with Dr. Pol. I read the book almost in one sitting. This is one I will keep on my shelves and re-read. Dr. Pol is so much like two or three veterinarians that have helped my animals over my close to 80 years with animals that it also brings up fond memories of those fine vets. I just wish today's young veterinarians were going to practice in the same way these great vets did and Dr. Pol still does. I'm grateful to Dr. Pol for agreeing to allow his life to become a hit on Nat Geo Wild and for writing this book.

Couldn't put the book down. Tells about Dr. Pol's experiences with his clients, animals and employees. What a great vet. Loved his sense of humor and his caring concern for all animals. Becoming Bach

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—In this elegantly composed biography, Johann Sebastian shares his dream of one day following in his family's footsteps and becoming a "bach," that is to say, a musician. For the young dreamer, "there was always music." Fascinated by different musical instruments, from the harpsichord and violin to the flute and organ, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) learns to play them all. After the death of his parents, he goes to live with his older brother, who gives him music lessons, setting the boy on his journey to greatness. Bach is shown seeing colorful patterns in the music he eagerly copies for his brother. Ultimately, he becomes a church organist, and he creates a "sound that would be heard forever." Adorned with musical notes and swirls of color, the acrylic paintings inventively portray Bach's world and his love of music, providing a rich and striking canvas for the first-person narrative. In one poignant illustration, the composer sits on the riverbank watching gentle raindrops fall. He envisions arrangements of the seven notes on the musical staff in the ripples on the water's surface. On certain pages, unfortunately, the lines of text incorporated into the artwork are lost in the magnificence of the picture. Back matter includes a suggested listening list to enhance young readers' experience of Bach's music. VERDICT A splendid addition to elementary collections. Music lovers will identify with the young composer as they witness his pursuit of his dream.—Linda L. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston

A lovely picture book which gives two biographies of Bach; the first, spread through the entirety of the lush illustrations, in simple lines ("I loved to copy music, but my brother hid the hard music from me. I found it when he was sleeping at night and copied it. ALL of it."), and the second, a formal and detailed history of his life all on one page, found at the back of the book.In this book, you are hearing the thoughts and recollections of Bach. First, you see him as a baby surrounded by a family tree of musicians ("bachs" in Germany, apparently). Then he is a toddler surrounded by musicians engaged in making music on cellos, violins, basses, and lutes. As a youngster, he learns to play the harpsichord, trumpet, violin, flute, and organ. Some of the tribulations of his life are touched upon, lightly: "After mother and father went to heaven, I needed to say things but words weren't enough."On one page, you can see (if you're a music reader) that young Johann is copying down the famous Pachelbel canon...I've just now purchased this book, but before that, it was loaned to me by the grandmother of one of my students. Turns out the author/illustrator is my student's uncle! The dedication page is addressed "For three strong women..." and shows a painting of an adorable young girl, the lines of whose face are composed entirely of music staffs and notes. This darling girl with a gentle expression strongly resembles my music student... Sorry, you can see that I am quite taken by this book!

Beautiful illustrations and a nice, simple story about Bach. Never knew that musicians during that time were called bachs! And now we know the origin of the expression "pulling out all the stops". Wonderfully written and so beautifully illustrated. I bought one for us, but will get more because this book is a beautiful gift

Includes fascinating information about Bach's life, kept our daughter's interest (6 years old). A good one to own and revisit.

Illustrations are beautiful. Very relatable story for my 8 year old. Also includes some interesting biographical information at the end. Very well done!

I think this book suffered greatly from the fact that we read it directly after finishing the amazing book, Bartolomeo Cristofori & the Invention of the Piano: the Music of Life, which has the same age range as this book but is just so, so much more. It felt a bit like Tom Leonard relied on Wikipedia as research for this book. Everything was superficial. For example, after his parents died, Johann Sebastian and his older brother go to live with their oldest brother. Johann Sebastian liked to copy music but the book relates that his brother hid the “hard music” from him. The story leaves it at that. It makes no sense to me without more context. Why in the world would his brother hide the hard music? Was it because it was expense? He did not want it misplaced? What? The book leaves you hanging like that at times. I did not come anyway feeling that we had any great insight into Bach as either a person or a musician.I am still giving it a 4 -star review primarily because of the beautiful illustrations. I particularly loved Leonard’s portraits of Bach as a young child and old man using musical notes. Beautiful! The book still had some good teaching moments. It is written in first person from Johann Sebastian’s POV, thus it is a fictionalized nonfiction book. My daughter and I discussed what that means. I also learned that the Bach family were so well-known as musicians in Germany at their time that musicians were called bachs! Loved that bit of trivia! Leonard also gave us the etymology of the idiom “pulling out all the stops.” Young Johann Sebastian, while working his first job as a church organist, pulled out all the stops on the organ pipes to play very loud music. One of the limitations of this first person style is that the narrator cannot point out that this is where we get the phrase “to pull out all the stops.” I wondered out loud to my daughter if this is where we get that idiom, so we looked it up on the internet. Made a good teaching moment. So, some good and some not so good. I think it is a nice, easy book for very young children; however, except for the illustrations, we were not blown away.

I can't believe more people haven't reviewed this book! I picked it up on a whim at the local library (I don't usually just pull books from the shelf) but what a find! Beautiful and meaningful illustrations, just the right amount of text to retain the attention of a young child, and a unique first person perspective, which really worked in this case. The author's note at the end is very informative and has some resources for finding out more about Bach. I think the most delightful part of the book though was the page with "I pulled out all the stops" - I had never thought about where this idiom came from before and now I know. Read the book and you will too! I hope this author/illustrator goes on to write a whole series on different composers/artists, as he hits just the right tone for the under 8 age group, and I haven't found anything like this before.

A picture book biography of composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach.A beautifully illustrated picture book biography that manages to convey the gist of Bach's life and accomplishments in a few short sentences. There is more information in the back of the book for those who want to know more. A great introduction for kids to a classic composer. Recommended for little music lovers, beautiful picture book biography lovers, and music classes.

This is a really great story. Perfect for 6 to 9-year-olds for you to read to them and with beautiful illustrations! My son his 8 and could read most of it on his own.
