Becoming Bach

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—In this elegantly composed biography, Johann Sebastian shares his dream of one day following in his family's footsteps and becoming a "bach," that is to say, a musician. For the young dreamer, "there was always music." Fascinated by different musical instruments, from the harpsichord and violin to the flute and organ, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) learns to play them all. After the death of his parents, he goes to live with his older brother, who gives him music lessons, setting the boy on his journey to greatness. Bach is shown seeing colorful patterns in the music he eagerly copies for his brother. Ultimately, he becomes a church organist, and he creates a "sound that would be heard forever." Adorned with musical notes and swirls of color, the acrylic paintings inventively portray Bach's world and his love of music, providing a rich and striking canvas for the first-person narrative. In one poignant illustration, the composer sits on the riverbank watching gentle raindrops fall. He envisions arrangements of the seven notes on the musical staff in the ripples on the water's surface. On certain pages, unfortunately, the lines of text incorporated into the artwork are lost in the magnificence of the picture. Back matter includes a suggested listening list to enhance young readers' experience of Bach's music. VERDICT A splendid addition to elementary collections. Music lovers will identify with the young composer as they witness his pursuit of his dream.—Linda L. Walkins, Saint Joseph Preparatory High School, Boston

A lovely picture book which gives two biographies of Bach; the first, spread through the entirety of the lush illustrations, in simple lines ("I loved to copy music, but my brother hid the hard music from me. I found it when he was sleeping at night and copied it. ALL of it."), and the second, a formal and detailed history of his life all on one page, found at the back of the book.In this book, you are hearing the thoughts and recollections of Bach. First, you see him as a baby surrounded by a family tree of musicians ("bachs" in Germany, apparently). Then he is a toddler surrounded by musicians engaged in making music on cellos, violins, basses, and lutes. As a youngster, he learns to play the harpsichord, trumpet, violin, flute, and organ. Some of the tribulations of his life are touched upon, lightly: "After mother and father went to heaven, I needed to say things but words weren't enough."On one page, you can see (if you're a music reader) that young Johann is copying down the famous Pachelbel canon...I've just now purchased this book, but before that, it was loaned to me by the grandmother of one of my students. Turns out the author/illustrator is my student's uncle! The dedication page is addressed "For three strong women..." and shows a painting of an adorable young girl, the lines of whose face are composed entirely of music staffs and notes. This darling girl with a gentle expression strongly resembles my music student... Sorry, you can see that I am quite taken by this book!

Beautiful illustrations and a nice, simple story about Bach. Never knew that musicians during that time were called bachs! And now we know the origin of the expression "pulling out all the stops". Wonderfully written and so beautifully illustrated. I bought one for us, but will get more because this book is a beautiful gift

Includes fascinating information about Bach's life, kept our daughter's interest (6 years old). A good one to own and revisit.

Illustrations are beautiful. Very relatable story for my 8 year old. Also includes some interesting biographical information at the end. Very well done!

I think this book suffered greatly from the fact that we read it directly after finishing the amazing book, Bartolomeo Cristofori & the Invention of the Piano: the Music of Life, which has the same age range as this book but is just so, so much more. It felt a bit like Tom Leonard relied on Wikipedia as research for this book. Everything was superficial. For example, after his parents died, Johann Sebastian and his older brother go to live with their oldest brother. Johann Sebastian liked to copy music but the book relates that his brother hid the “hard music” from him. The story leaves it at that. It makes no sense to me without more context. Why in the world would his brother hide the hard music? Was it because it was expense? He did not want it misplaced? What? The book leaves you hanging like that at times. I did not come anyway feeling that we had any great insight into Bach as either a person or a musician.I am still giving it a 4 -star review primarily because of the beautiful illustrations. I particularly loved Leonard’s portraits of Bach as a young child and old man using musical notes. Beautiful! The book still had some good teaching moments. It is written in first person from Johann Sebastian’s POV, thus it is a fictionalized nonfiction book. My daughter and I discussed what that means. I also learned that the Bach family were so well-known as musicians in Germany at their time that musicians were called bachs! Loved that bit of trivia! Leonard also gave us the etymology of the idiom “pulling out all the stops.” Young Johann Sebastian, while working his first job as a church organist, pulled out all the stops on the organ pipes to play very loud music. One of the limitations of this first person style is that the narrator cannot point out that this is where we get the phrase “to pull out all the stops.” I wondered out loud to my daughter if this is where we get that idiom, so we looked it up on the internet. Made a good teaching moment. So, some good and some not so good. I think it is a nice, easy book for very young children; however, except for the illustrations, we were not blown away.

I can't believe more people haven't reviewed this book! I picked it up on a whim at the local library (I don't usually just pull books from the shelf) but what a find! Beautiful and meaningful illustrations, just the right amount of text to retain the attention of a young child, and a unique first person perspective, which really worked in this case. The author's note at the end is very informative and has some resources for finding out more about Bach. I think the most delightful part of the book though was the page with "I pulled out all the stops" - I had never thought about where this idiom came from before and now I know. Read the book and you will too! I hope this author/illustrator goes on to write a whole series on different composers/artists, as he hits just the right tone for the under 8 age group, and I haven't found anything like this before.

A picture book biography of composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach.A beautifully illustrated picture book biography that manages to convey the gist of Bach's life and accomplishments in a few short sentences. There is more information in the back of the book for those who want to know more. A great introduction for kids to a classic composer. Recommended for little music lovers, beautiful picture book biography lovers, and music classes.

This is a really great story. Perfect for 6 to 9-year-olds for you to read to them and with beautiful illustrations! My son his 8 and could read most of it on his own.
