All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey, by Betsy Mason Greg Miller

Review

"This beautiful tome by WIRED alumni Betsy Mason and Greg Miller charts the fascinating history of cartography. The scores of maps in the book range from the whimsical (origins of meats supplied to Parisian butchers) to the political (North Dakota fracking sites) to the fantastical (Jerry Gretzinger’s imaginary world)."  –Wired"With an eye for splendor, Mason and Miller dredge up stories of the past through the medium of maps, often with something to say about the present. Their new book, All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey, binds hundreds of evocative maps into one volume, stitched with approachable, illuminating prose."  –Laura Bliss, CityLab “Mason and Miller, who run the All over the Map blog, aren’t professional cartographers but journalists, and their stance as relative novices who love maps makes this book a wonder…A must for cartography collections and a wonderful addition to social science and art shelves.” –Library Journal “It'd be pretty difficult to review the breadth of maps in the book to give you a flavor even. Let’s just say Mason and Miller have got you covered whatever your map vice is. So whether you like the painstaking detail of beautiful topographic maps, the imagination of celestial charts, the analytical representation of statistical data or the fantasy of the map of Westeros or the Death Star then there’s plenty in this book to feast on.” –Kenneth Field, Cartonerd blog“Mapping the cosmos is just one of the topics addressed in this entertaining, colorful look at historical maps and the stories behind them. Space fans will revel in the tale surrounding a century’s worth of road atlases for Mars’ (non-existent) canals, There are also entries for the history of moon maps, the solar system maps that NASA’s Pioneer and Voyager missions provided for the aliens, and the fictional Death Star diagrams. But wait … there’s much, much more. Co-authors Betsy Mason and Greg Miller provide a cornucopia of cartography that spans subjects ranging from a street map for ancient Rome and a 15th-century guide to the parallels between medieval maps of Britain and contemporary charts of the Seven Kingdoms in “Game of Thrones.”–GeekWire "Science journalists Greg Miller and Betsy Mason took their obsession with maps—historical, geologic, science-y, even of other worlds—and translated that into one of the most beautiful and interesting compendiums of stories I've ever read. The book is filled with over 200 maps, some famous, like maps of the ocean floor, some obscure, like a geologic map of the moon, which is easily one of the visually craziest maps I've ever seen. I can't recommend it highly enough."  –Kishore Hari, Inquiring Minds podcast "One of the most beautiful and fascinating books I’ve ever seen." –Mary Eileen Williams, Feisty Side of Fifty podcast “Betsy Mason and Greg Miller have collected a simply gorgeous set of maps and not only shared the reason behind the making of the maps, but their history, what they got correct and what they missed, and I have now spent hours poring over the beautiful pictures of maps, ancient and recent, artistic, scientific, and both, from all corners of the world that are found in this stunning collection.” –BookNAround   "I just loved getting lost in these images and these stories. All Over the Map is such a treat for cartographers and fans of maps (like me) - it is simply unputdownable." –A Bookish Way of Life  “There is information in here that even surprised a map lover like me. Maps of cities, mountains, oceans, industry, farming, tourist flow, war destruction, wind, and planets - and that is just to touch on a few. The content of this book is really amazing! I can't think of anybody who would not enjoy this one.” .” –Wall-to-Wall Books“Every page of this giant tome of a book features a beautiful representation of a specific map accompanied by super interesting information about its history, origins and purpose.” –Ms. Nose in a Book  “It is a big, beautiful and utterly fascinating book featuring all kinds of unique maps that chart worlds both real and imagined.” –Kahakai Kitchen  “…a truly wonderful book. It’s fun and informative and beautiful and thought-provoking and educational. What are you waiting for?” –5 Minutes for Books“When this large book came into my life, I was struck immediately by one thing, and this kept going… and going… and going…This book is possibly the most beautiful book I have ever owned in my entire life.” –Literary Quicksand

All Over the Map by Betsy Mason and Greg Miller showed up today and it is an absolutely beautiful book. As you'd expect in a book about maps, the maps are visually stunning, interesting, and represent a wide variety of topics and styles. The printing is well done and everything is very high quality. What I love most about this book is that each map is accompanied by an interesting story. Sometimes the story has to do with the subject depicted in the map, sometimes it is about how the map was produced, and sometimes it has to do with the interesting history of a rare and important map itself. What this results in is an interesting collection of topics that changes unexpectedly with each turn of the page. As I scanned through the book the first time I was captivated by stories like "A Mesoamerican Survivor" (describing the close-calls that nearly destroyed a rare Aztec map) right next to wonderful images from a thoroughly modern view of Earth's weather in "World of Wind".The organization of the book - which avoids a 'history of maps' format contributes even further to the interesting juxtaposition of maps and narratives.I couldn't be more impressed with this book. I'll be giving this as a gift this holiday season and will certainly keep a copy on my shelf!

Don't let the title fool you. This beautifully designed, meticulously researched book isn’t just for the cartographically inclined. Whether you’re a history buff, a scientist, or someone who just loves lively and engaging storytelling, you'll find something fascinating on nearly every page of "All Over the Map."

This is an amazing book! Both my husband and 14 year old son are “mappy” and they have spent hours both together and individually talking about and reading this book. Their favorite stories/maps are the SF Shipwreck, Soviet Union communist map and the Death Star. The book is well organized and the layout, graphics and photos compliment the engrossing text perfectly. Highly recommend!!

This is an amazing book! The maps are beautiful, stunning, interesting, engaging and informative. National Geographic definitely has a winner with All Over the Map. My 15 year old son immediately found the map of the Death Star and was hooked after that. We have all picked it up and read about a topic that then led to a discussion about something scientific or historical. Great book to have out and available for both kids and adults alike. Definitely recommended!!

A fascinating assembly and discussion of so many different types of maps and the stories behind them. I have a whole new appreciation of the history of cartography. You might also consider buying a magnifying glass as there is so much detail you are going to want that analog zoom!

Very neat book. I got this for Christmas for my map-loving boyfriend (geography major, has had only mapping-related jobs) and he started reading it immediately. It has a great variety of maps, including fictional maps (Game of Thrones! Death Star plans!), but from what he said, it also includes some of the well-known "classic" maps. Good graphics, and enough of a story with each map that it feels more substantial than your typical coffee-table book full of pretty pictures.

Really like these. Bought a few to see how they looked and am buying more. Whoever boxed these needs retraining. I bought 8 and they were shipped in 2 different huge boxes with some other small items. Waste of resources.

Beautiful book for inquisitive readers.

From the Inside Flap

?Southerners seem to stay close to each other, accumulating ties of kinship in a way that ultimately becomes almost impossible to unravel, and thus the family house remains the center of births, marriages, and deaths through the generations.??From Under Live OaksThere is a part of the South that clings to its past, whether that past is an imagined or a real one. Resonant with antebellum elegance and sometimes turbulent history, the houses of Under Live Oaks act as a touchstone for another time, becoming repositories of rich family traditions for their owners. This tenacity to hold on to their history is beautifully demonstrated in the decor of these houses, filled with antiques and personal treasures, decorated in the style that was fashionable 150 years ago and that has not been tampered with since. More than 200 images from acclaimed photographer Peter Woloszynski fill the pages of Under Live Oaks, giving a provocative view into a world many never see?a world of faded portraits, shelves of dusty porcelain, dolls lined up in an armchair, family letters, lace fans, invitations to the cotillion, old steamer trunks. These houses were the royal palaces of the age, furnished with the finest objects and fabrics?many imported from Europe?that the first half of the nineteenth century had to offer. Under Live Oaks offers a remarkably consistent vision of a period, a period that takes its place in the dark history of America and that casts a permanent shadow over its legacy. The houses range from an Italianate villa in Columbus, Georgia, to a masterful Greek Revival mansion in Fairvue, Tennessee; from the charming Catalpa in St. Francisville, Louisiana, to the melancholy Winter Place in Montgomery, Alabama. The classic plantation houses of Natchez, Mississippi, compete in beauty with an elegant townhouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, and the historic Sherwood Forest in Charles City, Virginia. All the states of the Deep South are represented. A few of the houses are open to the public; others are unknown and unvisited except by family and friends. Yet all of them stand as witnesses to a bygone era. Noted author Caroline Seebohm eloquently casts the stories of the land, the houses, and their owners. She vividly evokes the power of the architecture and interior design of these houses, and through her we hear the owners? pride of place and staunch allegiance to their family history. Under Live Oaks is an intimate tour of the Old South, an experience available to only a few and that in the not-too-distant future will be lost forever.

Part of me loves this.. the other part thinks the houses are kind of junky and boring. And odd. But some of the houses that are shown I just love, and transports me back to a time when these houses were the norm, and decorating respresented the person and not just the trends... such an odd eclectic mix... kind of like me I suppose. :)

It came in good shape

We are always on the lookout for old victorian houses. We really enjoyed the photos and descriptions and would love to be able to tour some of these homes! Imagine the history involved and the stories the walls could tell!

Wonderful book with good info and pictures. This one was missing several pages in a few places which was very unfortunate though.

Didn't read it through yet but what I have read is very interesting. It's a nice coffee table book .

Gave as gift to friend who had ancestors there. He liked it alot.

I own a 120 year old farmhouse in the South and I am fascinated w/ the history and culture. This book is a JOY! I LOVE reading about the families in the book, the photos are GORGOUS and I have been unable to put this book down! Of all the 'Home' books I've read this is by far my absolute favorite! ENJOY!!!

LOVED!
