This book is exceptional! I found it in the San Francisco Airport Bookstore. My travel partner offered to buy it for me, and I declined it, thinking it would be just another cool book on my bookshelf, but not particularly useful. Fast forward a few months as I launch a website and a business card. Now I am scrambling to remember the name of this book and how to locate it. Luckily Amazon had it. Sarah Hyndman does a fabulous job of analyzing the meaning and emotion that fonts connote. Very colorful, graphically interesting presentation. But I was disappointed with this purchase.Main problem is that once you've read one chapter, you've read all 13, you just don't know it yet. After about 3-4 chapters, you start going, "Wait. Did I lose my bookmark? This sounds and looks like the last chapter I remember reading." I have to give credit for the author's taking her apparent career as a type consultant and workshop presenter to the published book format. More income and maybe a textbook - charge cards accepted - for those workshops. "We'll have quizzes, fun guessing games and font charts for the next 13 weeks as we drill into you the concept that the font should suit the purpose. Except when you want the reverse to happen."As a graphic designer and creator of many fonts over a 30-year career, let me save you some time, trouble and money: "Your font should suit its purpose.Unless you don't want it to." No charge; you're very welcome.

Loved this book. It's fun, interactive and I really enjoyed how Sarah has analyzed type to teach us how it influences us every day. A great book for reference if your starting to learn about type and choosing the right typefaces for your project and includes fun and interesting exercises.

I've been choosing and working with fonts since the late 70s and I have dozens of books on type… but this book is different. Through many fun illustrations, anecdotes, and facts, the author tells the story of how fonts and typography affect us. Some of it is rather light, with disconnected sections, but it's the kind of book you can open anywhere and find something interesting.

This book is very accessible yet provides great insights into the psychology of fonts and how they influence the choices we make and how we present ourselves. A fun read!

When I finished THE DAY THAT WENT MISSING, I though for a long time. I thought about the author doing what she does best in a literary memoir and that is excavating. The author does that here in slow painstaking steps. He exhausts every piece of the story of his brother's death and follows it to the end, even when that end might not give him all the answers he wants. It is all so difficult for him. There's his approach and pulling back from THE spot where his brother drowned and then finally a full-on confrontation, not quite leading to an exoneration, but an acceptance.

When I was a child, my father often went on business to England from our home in Connecticut. We spent many summers in Cornwall and I fell in love with the area. I became aware of this book several months ago after reading excerpts in several online UK newspapers. It seemed like such a sad story, yet one I wanted to read. After reading the review in the NY Times (Dec. 18) I purchased the book on my Kindle and could not put it down. This is a sad, but beautifully written story.

Gutrenching. Author's storytelling, candor and authenticity bring this book alive. A book I won't soon forget. A highly recommended memoir.

Richard Beard was eleven years old when his nine-year-old brother Nicky drowned in the sea on a family holiday. The rest of his family never spoke of the incident or discussed it among themselves. Decades later, Richard finds himself asking why. So begins a quest to uncover the events of that summer, to turn his eye on them for the first time – and this time, to not look away.I found this book to be a rich experience, written in plain, precise, intelligent language that examines difficult emotions in unsparing clarity. Richard’s his quest throws up many unexpected problems for him. First of all, it’s difficult to persuade his mother to talk about her memories, but when she does he finds they don’t match his own. For instance, she had always sworn that Nicky’s things were in a red suitcase in the attic. In fact, when Richard goes searching he finds they were not; they were scattered through all the other family possessions.This unsettles him profoundly. ‘If I’m wrong about what I remember, what else might I always be wrong about?’ And there’s much more for him to examine here than just a few mistaken facts.He talks about Nicky as he remembers him, which becomes an examination of the nature of sibling relationships. He remembers Nicky being fiercely competitive, and how it was a matter of honour to do better than him. Ultimately, Richard has to confront the fact that he beat Nicky once and for all – they were both in the sea that day, and Richard outswam the wave that claimed Nicky’s life. He returns many times to this, trying to strip away the pecking order of family life that stops you seeing a sibling for who they truly are, trying to understand who Nicky might really have been. There are frequent references to Lord of the Flies, and the feral rivalries of youth.Part of Richard’s quest is an attempt to understand why Nicky’s death became a subject the family never shared or talked about. He wants to unravel how that happened and whether it might have been possible to handle it differently. This was before the days when counselling was routine. We get a portrait of an ordinary family in the late 1970s, trying to do their best in a situation that nobody is ever really equipped to handle.With so many unreliable memories, every detail takes on a totemic quality; the exact location of the beach, the exact time of death, the coroner’s findings. All are part of Richard’s journey to confront the events – and not just the sequential facts, but deeper and perhaps unpalatable emotional truths.Every step of the search gives him a new emotion to assimilate. For the most part, I found the narrative riveting, although I did think it slow in some of the later sections. Nevertheless, I feel privileged to have been taken on such an honest journey and I’ll be thinking about it for some considerable time. Moving and memorable.

Grief is an intimate thing. No one really can know how you feel when you lose a loved one, but I know from experience that it can be shared. It was hard for me to imagine that this family suffered in silence for so many years having shut out such a tragic loss.“Nicky is fragmented, the scraps of his life scattered in pieces that until now no one has thought to gather together. We erased the accident at the beach, and along with the pain we effectively deleted Nicholas Paul Beard the person. We may not have meant to but we did, though not entirely.” Richard Beard was eleven years old when his nine year old brother Nicky drowned while his family vacationed by the sea in Cornwall, England. Forty years later he is trying to uncover the memory of that day, the story of who his brother was and confront his grief. He didn’t even know the date his brother died, so he begins his “inquest”. He is feeling the need to face that repressed grief, the fact that he saw his brother drown but never told anyone, haunting him with guilt. He talks to his mother and his brothers seeking their recollection of that day, their memories of his brother. He searches through his mother’s attic for remnants of his brother’s life - boarding school reports, things that belonged to his brother, his father’s papers and records for clues to what happened. He painfully returns to the beach where it happened, to the house the family was renting when the tragedy occurred, the very same house that his parents brought them back to right after the funeral. I couldn’t imagine that. This is a sad, difficult journey as Beard grapples with his own memories and those of his family which are sometimes at odds with his own remembrances. I don’t know for sure if he found the peace he was seeking, but I hope so. This is a beautifully written and moving memoir and I’m interested in perhaps reading some of his fiction.I received an advanced copy of Little, Brown and Company.

I grew up as a student and then a practicing professional architect reading many of these reviews, Reading this material now put into context and perspective many of the issues, developments and debates we have been participating in as a culture and profession.

Every page is replete with bon mots, apercus of the highest distinction, and understanding of architecture from the several perspectives of engineering, sociology, economics and aesthetics. Sheer brilliance that somehow manages to be fun reading. No wonder that Ms. Huxtable went from the pages of the New York Times to its editorial board--the first woman to do so--then on to the Wall Street Journal. A living national treasure at 91!

I have always been a fan of ALH and its great to get these reviews all in one place and as an added bonus they provide an ad-hoc guide to great architecture in New York and the other cities.

Remarkably well written. The superior writing is as entertaining as the wonderful insights about the subject. Exceptionally intelligent criticism.. .

Informative, insiteful, and opinionated. A must read to be informed about modern and post modern architecture.

My husband, the architect, and I have both found this book to be highly informative and, often, quite amusing. Ms Huxtable is so knowledgeable and wise, and explains things so that the average lay person GETS her criticisms. She does not cower before giants.

I ordered this book after hearing the author discussing it on NPR. I gave it to my friend who is interested in architecture. We looked at it together, and she seemed very pleased. I was disapointed that there were not more pictures of the buildings discussed. I think there is another book that costs a lot more and perhaps has the pictures. This was expensive enough, so I didn't order the other one.

I haven't a clue, but I want this request to review the product to go away so again I'm writing. Like I said on other things this was on someone's list and I bought it as a gift. It arrived in good condition if that helps.

Loved it! I spent four years living in the Norfolk area while my husband was stationed on the USS Independence Carrier while serving his country in the US Navy. Author Andrew Watts hit the nail dead-on with these three novels, that flow right from one to the next. While each book is a stand-alone story that kept me on the edge of my emotions through the whole ordeal of how those with an unexhausted wealth of money can become despots hell-bent on ruling the world in their image. I laughed, I cried, and I cheered, and that is what makes this series a must-read for any fans of espionage war thrillers of fiction.Book 1: The War Planners with David Manning as a kidnapped computer analyst who was previously in the Navy and is held captive on a secluded island with other American's who have been lied to by their US bosses to participate in a think tank to find ways to breach the USA's defense system. David comes from a family of Navy personnel that include his Admiral father, brother an ex-Navy Seal, and sister who is an ace helicopter pilot.Book 2: The War Stage with Chase Manning ex-Navy Seal is sent to Dubai on a CIA secret mission, betrayed by another and rescuing his brother are his man concerns.Book 3: Pawns of the Pacific with Victoria Manning a Helicopter Boss in the US Navy on the USS Farragut Destroyer extracts her brother Chase from the jungles of Equador in an all-out race to get to Panama before being sunk by an enemy and avoiding World War III from breaking out.

Save yourself a few bucks and buy the three-book package deal—The War Planners, The War Stage, and Pawns of the Pacific. A timely plot—the Chinese conspire to take over America militarily, then economically and politically. Watts effectively narrows a grand scheme to a small number of well-drawn, interesting characters. Lots of accurate armed services action and jargon. A very good explanation of bitcoins and their uses. So—entertaining and educational.

Outstanding character development, when you feel like the story may be a bit dragging, there is a sudden twist that takes you by surprise, and on a new path. Deeply engrossing book, as I found it difficult to put it down. I recommend this series highly as the author has credibility and thoughtfulness.

I enjoyed this book not only for the skill of the author, but also for his ability to craft a tale that seems possible in today's world. I purchased the series, books 1-3, which were read entirely as if it was a single book. I would have been extremely disappointed if I had purchased only the first book and was required to purchase separately books 2 and 3 in order to understand the entire tale. Generally I stay away from "series " books because I don't want to be left hanging at the end of each book. I'm OK if the author uses the same characters in a different adventure, but will quickly abandon any author who leaves me hanging after the first book of a series! Each book should stand on its own with a beginning and an ending.

I just finished reading the War Planners Series 1-3. This is a series written by an author who knows his audience and his craft. Having lived much of what he is writing about Andrew Watts is an able craftsman in putting it into book form. All three of this books are very readable and hard to put down. Anyone interested in modern warfare, international intrigue, or plausible international conflicts should read this series.

Unaware of War Planners, I read Glidepath and Assassin's Game first and love all of them! Andrew got me wondering about Bitcoin and there's a documentary of it on Netflix that I have to watch now. The plots are amazing and frankly, I got attached to the Manning family and actually cried for them in the end but ... I'm a softy! These are great read if you like accurate military and aviation jargon. Andrews "roots" are showing.

This trilogy, with a 4th volume in the works, is riveting. The characters, their interactions and development, were concise, engaging the emotions and the intellect almost biographically. The high regard Andrew has for our military and intelligence apparatus, and utter disdain for those who don't deserve the honor of commanding men and women nor this great nation, came through clear as crystal. His well-researched knowledge of our military and tactical abilities, and our adversaries, have a solid platform for non-stop, edge-of-the-seat action and adventure. This was as good as any Clancy writings, and I am huge fan of Tom Clancy and his stable of writers (RIP). It has left me with a heart-felt "May I have some more?" bursting from my lips. Hoorah!

This is the best book of any sort I have read in a long time. It has it all. There are military and intelligence aspects of war which are unusually convincing. Even though I have extensive experience in both areas I found nearly all the descriptions to be accurate with only a few small and unimportant exceptions that someone without a very high level security clearance just wouldn't know. Character development is unusually good with both individual characters and even an entire family described in a way they come to life. The plot and theme of the story is exciting and believable even though (thank goodness) it is the author's creation rather than a reflection of reality. I would recommend this volume of three books to anyone who likes to read fiction and especially those who like military and intelligence adventure stories.
