I am a size 12, 42 year old peri-menopausal woman – possibly the hardest time to lose weight. I have always struggled with my weight due to both genetics (the women on my dad’s side are morbidly obese, type 1 diabetics) and lifestyle (we travel a lot and who can go for a 12 hour flight without wine or say no to pasta in Italy or croissants in France?). When I need to lose weight, I typically opt for Atkins, which usually works well. But, this year, things changed. I diligently stayed below 20g of net carbs a day with a caloric intake between 500 and 1000 calories and, after a month, the scale barely budged. Really? I was so frustrated, I didn’t know what to do. Then, I found Dr. Pescatore’s book through the article in First magazine. Although I found the claim of “drop 57 lbs by Memorial Day” utterly ridiculous, I’d be thrilled at a result at just 15% - 20% of that. So, I bought the Kindle version (hard cover was not yet available) and figured I’d give it a go.Reading the book:Although I am a lay person, I do like to know the “why” behind the do so I actually enjoyed learning about the functions of the different proteins and amino acids. Granted, I can’t recall enough of the details to pass a test but the science made enough sense to me to try out the plan. So, I readied myself for Phase 1 – Detox. This includes a 3 day (not 2 day as others claim) full liquid detox (day 3 is broth, which I don’t count as food). Yes, the supplements are expensive but I thought that if I was going to really try this out, I wanted to stick to it as purely as possible so that any failure would be the good doctor’s and not mine.Ordering the Product:When I went to the website, all items I ordered were in stock. Specifically, I ordered the following:• DetoxLogic• MetaMulti Advanced• Robuvit• Burn LogicTotal Price - $264. The most egregiously priced is the multi-vitamin at $110 which you can probably do without. Mine didn’t arrive in time for my first week of Detox so I went with my usual multi-vitamin which seemed fine.Dealing with customer service is HORRIBLE. In my confirmation email, I was told I would receive a tracking # when the items shipped (all were in stock so I expected them to ship immediately). Days later, I heard nothing so I inquired. I then received an email notifying me that DetoxLogic (which showed in stock when I ordered) was back ordered for 20 days. What? I was planning to start my detox in 2 days so I emailed them back asking them to cancel my order. I was told that the order had processed and could not be cancelled. Two more emails back to them telling them I was not notified of the shipping delay at the time of payment and no longer need the item. Never heard a word back. It was eventually cancelled but no one told me until I called back a 4th time to try to get things settled.I ordered Nutricost BCAA powder ($20.95), Reg’Active Liver and Health ($37.50), Bulk Supplements DMG ($22.95) and Nature Made Tumeric Supplements ($9.62 for 60) on Amazon and got a Detox supplement through my grocery store. All in all, I spent around $350 for all of the supplements. Expensive – Yes (and you can probably cut that in half with a few swaps, especially the multi-vits). However, I haven’t found any other diet plans that are less expensive than this. Here’s how it went:My biggest fear was not the liquid fast (although 3 days did sound long) because I usually don’t eat a ton and often practice intermittent fasting (waiting 16-18 hours between meals). If you are someone who has to eat every 4 hours, this may not be the diet for you. For me, the lack of wine and coffee in my life was terrifying. But, I had committed. So, day 1, I drank water and herbal tea throughout the day and was surprised to find I was ok, except for some fatigue. Day 2 was similar. I didn’t experience headaches or hunger pains but was tired, really tired. The problem started that evening. I experienced awful muscle pains in my lower back, pelvic region and thighs. The pain was so bad, I couldn’t sleep at all that night. I tried self-massage and heating pads but the pain was in too many places. It was ok when I was standing but excruciating when I sat or lay down. I don’t know if it was my body releasing toxins or a lack of potassium or some other mineral but it was pretty unbearable. The pain continued through Day 3 when I broke down and took 3 Excedrin Migraine and, poof, all was better. (No, I am not a spokesperson for Execdrin but I would be willing to be now). This was my first foray into bone broth, which I purchased grass-fed, organic in the freezer section of Central Market. I’m not a fan of the gelatinous consistency so I didn’t repeat the broth through the rest of phase 1. On Day 4, you are allowed eggs. I had 2 at noon and then was shocked that I wasn’t hungry the rest of the day so I just kept drinking my water and tea. On Day 5, my energy had returned – so much that I hosted a party for 25 people at my house. Again, I was surprised to look at the clock and see it was 7 pm and it hadn’t occurred to me to eat at all so, despite not being very hungry, I had half an avocado and 2 more eggs. By the end of week 1, I was down a total of 11.5 lbs.Week 2:To say that I was excited to get back to some of my “regular” routine which included coffee and vegetables is an understatement. I eagerly poured my first cup of coffee and – ugh. After a week of drinking herbal tea, my beloved coffee now tasted awful. Then, I turned my attention to configuring the different shots and protein shakes. Although I have already considered myself to be above average intelligence (I have 2 Ivy League degrees), I felt completely confused at the ingredients and measurements of these different potions. I’m shocked that Dr. Pescatore hasn’t packaged the AM and PM shots in pre-portioned shots – seems like a no-brainer to add to his list of supplements. By the way, they taste AWFUL. Other than that, I stuck to the plan, cooked with Macadamia Nut oil and, after 11 days, I’m down 14 pounds. The supplements are A LOT. I feel like I am ingesting mountains of pills every morning but they seem to be working where the regular Atkins diet failed me.This diet definitely takes some patience and some effort but it works much better than any other diet I have tried so I’ll stick to it.Here are the things I would suggest if you are considering this program:1. If you are someone who needs to eat regularly or are terrified of the idea of fasting, maybe you should try a week of intermittent fasting or the 5:2 diet before venturing on this fast. Again, I really didn’t get hungry at all but I have a history of intermittent fasting.2. Schedule your Detox to begin during a 2-3 day period when you can lay low as you will likely be exhausted. Probably not great if you have a big presentation at work or are entering finals at school.3. The sheer number of supplements is confusing. I purchased a weekly pill container with 3 compartments (AM, Noon and PM) and doled out my supplements a week in advance. Same with the AM and PM shots which I pre-mixed and put into snack sized Ziploc bags.4. The Cuisinart CPK-17 ($77.86 on Amazon) was a life saver for me. This electric kettle allows you to boil water at different temperatures for different types of tea leaves.5. If you are a coffee drinker as I am, look into finding some good “pick me up” herbal teas. My favorites are Ginseng, Peppermint, Tea Pigs Licorice-Peppermint and Ginger-TumericGood Luck.

I regretted the purchase of this book. Some good tips and recipes, but the nutritional supplement recommendations were extensive and cost prohibitive. I also went to the doctor's website the prices were ridiculous. Put me on the B list.

After trying this diet I can honestly say that it does work and there is real science behind it. I can also say that I do not think it is necessary to purchase the doctor's supplements (including the super shakes and shots) although he claims over and over throughout the book that it is key. I read the book and have a fairly strong understanding (at least I think I do) of nutrition and supplements and how different foods trigger different reactions in our system. I coached my mother on the diet and we tried it together. Here are a few takeaways and our results:-Me, 30 - started at around 145 pounds - I work out 4-5 times a week and was trying to eat healthy but just could not seem to lose weight.-Mom, 60 - started at 155 pounds - Does only moderate exercise and keeps a mostly healthy diet. The fasting/detox phase was extremely difficult during Phase 1. I have completed detoxes and cleanses before in the past and have never experienced such horrible headaches and weakness throughout. I really was not able to work out as I normally do during Phase 1. It is tough but I think that this stage is necessary to jump start your metabolism and prepare yourself for the upcoming weeks. I believe we lost somewhere around 5-7 pounds during this phase. By the end of Week 2, Phase 2 we were down 10 pounds. Phase 2 was not difficult to follow the hardest times were during weddings or family parties that popped up but I was usually able to find foods that I was allowed during this stage. We continued to lose about 2-3 per week in Phase 2. We are still mostly following the guidelines of Phase 2 even though we are in Week 6 just because I found it so easy and am continuing to lose weight. At this point I have lost 15 pounds and my mother has lost 20. I have had a very positive experience with the guidelines that Dr. Pescatore has set out but my reason for giving the book 4 stars instead of 5 is that in my experience I skipped his pricey supplements and was still successful in losing the weight. I told myself that I would forgo the shakes and supplements when I started and if I was not losing weight then I would drop the hundreds of dollars. But that never happened. Here is what I did take and am still taking:-Multi Vitamin-Milk Thistle (just until the end of Week 4)-Green Tea Extract-Probiotic-Fish oil-Vitamin DYou don't have to do what I did but good luck!

I read about this diet in First Magazine. The article talked about switching up your proteins, drinking Purely Inspired Organic Greens, and a super shake. No mention of fasting on tea for 2 days, broth, then add eggs, avocado and nuts each day. There are shake recipes that have ingredients you will have to find at a health food store, or better yet you can order them from the good doctor on his website, when they become available. Only A-list celebs can afford this diet. I may try to make some of the recipes. Glad I only paid $14.

I do not recommend this book. The supplements that are required for this diet are very expensive.

Was ready to try this diet, but at the time of my purchase and going to his website none of the products that were suggested to use were available and even if they were very expensive. Not helpful for me.

I like the science behind this diet and I am losing weight. A big drawback to it is the extremely high cost of the supplements that go along with it.

What a joke. Confusing and hard to follow. I knew after the first couple of chapters I had wasted my money. The diet starts out the first week with just don't eat for a couple of days then just eat some broth. Of course you will lose weight if you can basically not eat for a week. Thought about returning but too much hassle.
