A fascinating story, well told, about the early years of the National Football League and the many obstacles the owners had to overcome to make the League the success that it is today. It would be helpful if the current Commissioner would read it and realize the legacy he has been given to protect and enhance. It would also be helpful if the current billionaire owners would read it and appreciate what it took to let them have what they have today.
I really enjoyed this story by Eisenberg (knowing he is a great writer from local sports gigs). It really does tell with amazing insight the story of the fledgling league that barely survived and how the owners helped and supported each other, where they came from, their sordid pasts etc. Its full of so much insight that I never had a clue about in the early days of the NFL. I recommend it to any avid NFL fan
John Eisenberg does a great job of telling the early history of the NFL through the story of five of the founding members. It was an enjoyable read. Gives you great insight into how the NFL has evolved into a multi billion dollar business. But as Eisenberg shows us the 5 Rivals did not have an easy time getting the NFL kicked off. Mr. Eisenberg, job well done.
This is the third book by Eisenberg that I've read regarding NFL history and this is easily the best one. The way he weaved the story of the founding and survival of the NFL through the perspective of these five men was very entertaining. I had been looking forward to this book for months and not only did it meet my expectations, it exceeded them. I highly recommend this book if you're a fan of sports history.
