This is a good volume of Roethke's poems. Aside from not including Roethke's latest style -- poems in lengthy free verse -- it includes most of Roethke's best poems. As for the quality of the poems themselves, Roethke may have been the greatest American poet to appear at about the half-century mark -- greater than Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell, even. He has several styles. The early poems are quite traditional. Then there are the poems that could have been written by no one else. These could be narrated by a mole or a worm. They're full of garden or green house images and seem to run a tangent to conscious thought or expression. About this time, Roethke developed a simple free-verse style that we see in poems like "An Elegy for Jane" and "The Meadow Mouse." These have surprising power because, at least to me, they register the confidence and sincerity of the great artist. Then come the poems that seem to echo Yeats in style, but, contrary to much adverse criticism, could never be mistaken for Yeats. And then there was the final period referred to above, which isn't included in this volume but is anticipated in poems like "The Abyss." If you're interested in poetry but are unfamiliar with Roethke, you're in for a very pleasant experience.
This book is a must for anyone wishing to understand the “suggestive†aspect of poetry, meaning the ability to draw out emotions and ideas in the reader. Theodore Roethke, especially in his poems about his father, allows the reader to experience the depth of his feelings with images and skillful selection of words and ideas. A new poet can gain a great deal from this book.
A long time fan of "The Waking" and "In a Dark Time", I decided to explore more of Roethke's poetry. Sheer genius from a great American poet. Deeply insightful yet personal, almost humble, this definitive collection of Roethke's work is worth far more than the modest cost of this book. A work of great depth and breadth; just buy it.
There a poets, like Richard Hugo, Leslie Norris, and Nelson Bentley who approach the brilliance of Ted Roethke near the speed of light, but Roethke is their father, their bright sun of origin. Roethke could take an observation and give it the words that would make it alive to any future reader. Not only alive, but present, immediate, and touchable. "I knew a woman, lovely in her bones..." We have all seen that woman, and Roethke gives her life, just as he did in "Elegy for Jane", his former student. If there ever is a Master of the Universe prize in Poetry, Ted Roethke should be its first recipient.
Great collection of poems. just so moving!
A very good poet worthy of his accolades. Love this complete works edition.
I studied Roethke in college years ago. His poetry does the "dance of opposites." His imagery is great, often with a focus on very small things. Sometimes he has an unexpected burst of humor, i.e., "I keep a dog and bark myself." Other times he is deeply philosophical, but never obtuse. Enjoy.
This collection contains Roethke's "Words for the Wind", one of the great c20 collections by any poet. Everything Roethke touched came instantly to life. He's ignored for his classicism, so was Ravel. No matter. When it comes time to decide what a poem is, they'll turn to Roethke. The poems from Words for the Wind deal in heart stopping beauty, refinement of form, and the pleasures of a uniquely great mind in play.Dont miss it.
