This is a satisfying conclusion to the five volume Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. Sometimes authors of serials "make it up as they go along" and the concluding installment is anticlimactic, contradictory, an out and out cheat, or just plain lame. That isn't the case here. Author Riordan seems to have plotted this out from very early in the series (I suspect shortly after the Lightning Thief) and everything comes together organically and naturally as if part of a plan. Although the book is packed with revelations it's still not overly long; just a few pages more than the Lightning Thief. The structure is different from the previous books. Those books, while advancing a larger plot, had a self contained story resolved in the book. In the present volume it's all about bringing that larger plot to a conclusion. The Titans attack and Percy and friends resist. The action takes place largely on Manhattan and the plot device hitherto used (the "Mist") to cloak immortal actions from mortal eyes is stretched to the breaking point. This is probably the weakest part of the plot but the author sugar coats it well enough for the reader to swallow.Highly recommended. There are plot hooks galore for future stories in this imaginary world and author Riordan is making full use of them.

I really loved all the Percy Jackson series. It was wonderful to see how all the parts connected in the end, no lose ends. I love that these books don't leave anything open to interpretation and explain the story very well. I really enjoyed all the adventure, it was great! The characters are also very easy to empathize with, I already miss Percy and Annabeth. The one thing that left me a bit disappointed about this book in particular is that with it being the last one in the series revolving around the first great prophecy, and Percy finally having to play his very important part, I expected more conflict on him. Percy is under a lot of pressure and tension, I think it would have been more realistic, and more pleasing therefore, to see more conflict go on within him, to see him struggle a bit more to make the right decisions and therefore see some growth in his own personality, to go deeper and give more meaning to the "yealding" Hestia talks about. In short: I think we didn't see Percy really "yealding". It seems that everything was a bit too easy for him when it came to making decisions. That felt too unreal. I feel that the whole topic of yielding, maturing, being generous and really having to struggle to get there, which is what most have to go through, wasn't represented in a realistic manner. It was too simplistic. On a final note, as much as I have found this new take on mythological stories fun and entertaining, I'm not sure I'll read the other books in The Heroes of Olympus and The Trials of Apollo series. It gets boring if you only read about the same thing. It would be great if the author wrote about other things besides mythology, and offered us new adventures to read without having anything to do with mythology.

This was a really good book. It may even be my favorite of the series. It gets right down to business from the beginning. The fight is in full force. Poseidon is battling to protect his kingdom under the water, the half-bloods must defend Camp Half-Blood and the city of Manhattan, and the gods take their own stand leaving Olympus defenseless.Percy has to face some serious obstacles in this book and he becomes the true leader I've been wanting to see in the series. He leads his army against Kronos even when the odds are stacked up against him. Annabeth is always at his side and always makes a great companion with Percy. I loved that in this book you find out about Anabeth and Lukes past together and what led him to do what he did. This book was all-around very good.

Awesome! I'm not really fully satisfied with the series ending, since I was left wondering what the heck happens to everyone, but it was a great addition to the series, and a great end to the main storyline. I loved it. Let me put it simply: If you like YA books, appreciate a good sense of humor, and have even the slightest interest in Greek Mythology, this series is one that you MUST read, if you haven't done so yet. They are not only greatly entertaining, but are based on the actual Greek myths, meaning they can teach you some things you may not know as well. As for the conclusion, while I might not be thrilled with how it was left largely up in the air, I also am quite happy to say that this is one of the relatively few book series that did not miss a step right through to the end, with the same level of humor and enjoyment to be found in this book as was found in the book that introduced me to the series. So, please, if you fall in the group mentioned above, do yourself a favor and check it out.

My oh my oh my. I loved this one. When the previous book in the series, Battle of the Labyrinth, was all set-up to Last Olympian, I was worried Riordan wouldn’t stick the landing or it wouldn’t be satisfying enough.I was wrong.I think about two thirds of this book was all the battle that the entire series has been building to, which was so smart because it made it feel so big and important. There was no last minute gotchas, no subverting the fighting and attrition the war needed. If delivered on the big and epicness that has been promised since book one.My only complaint, and it isn’t big enough to detract from my rating, is just the same one I have for every book in this series. I don’t love Riordan’s writing. I think he needs to slow down and take his time. I’m not saying turn these in to 600 page books, but just add 50 pages to the thing and give us some details and descriptions. Middle grade is plenty able to have depth and I just hope his future series have that in mind. But, for The Last Olympian, I think Riordan outdid himself. This is clearly the best book in the series, and an incredibly satisfying conclusion to everything preceding it. 5 stars.
