"Death by PowerPoint" is a reality and in spite of all that's been written and said, it continues to be inflicted on audiences every day. This book will perhaps do it's part in trying to prevent that, but it leaves out the key ingredient--the purpose of those slides is illustrative. Too many speakers believe their PowerPoint is their presentation. Having read another book by the same author, I'm left feeling that he is "exploiting" TED talks to sell his products and services as a speaker and coach. There are, frankly, far better books available explaining graphics design and illustrative speaking. I purchased this one because I'm a huge fan of TED talks and hoped the book would reflect the "TED quality." It did not nor did itconvince me I should hire the author if I'm ever invited to give a TED Talk... most of the "tips" are very basic in nature. The book would also benefit from some editing and organization--not to mention that explaining the use of color in black and white print seems a bit... odd.
I am in an online educational program, as part of which we are required to present a lunch & learn using "professional quality slides". I didn't even know what that meant! This book has been worth its weight in gold in giving me tips and ideas. I would have crammed everything I was going to say onto the slides so that the viewers would have a comprehensive set of notes when they left, but now I know that this would be distracting and they'd be reading instead of paying attention to what I'm saying. And so many other guidelines that I believe I can definitely give a satisfactory presentation when my turn comes.
Could serve as a college course yet is very user friendly and well conceived to deliver the primary concerns of graphic design for visual communication.
Great information and so well written.I have been a public speaker for almost 20 years and I still love reading other people's ideas and tips.This book will set anyone interested in making presentations on the right track while having fun at the same time.
This book changed my approach to creating slides. Efficiently written with clear instruction and tons of suggestions.
Karia really drives his point home- It's about your audience, not about you. Everything needs to be contributing to that goal or don't do it.Reminder, Karia says up front- this is not about the talk, it's about the presentation that supports the talk.Plenty of examples both in the book and via web links. The kindle version is almost better than paper because of this.
Designing a TED Talk isn't that easy. I am giving a TED-like talk soon, and I only have 20 minutes with Q&A. This booklet is really easy to follow. It's been immensely helpful to me in planning and simplifying the content. I actually changed my focus regarding my topic to make it VERY clear, after reading this and another article. The slide demonstrations are very helpful. It's been my guide for turning in the Title of my talk, the learning points, and now to get ready for the slide show.
It delivers what offers, easy to consult. The real presentations examples are a plus, it gives a best expierience for the reader!!
