Helpful when I traveled to Costa Rica and Panama. The size was also great. There were a few basic phrases that were not included which would have been nice. It was also difficult to try and ask someone a question because the book doesn't explain many possible responses, so you end up asking the right question but having no idea what their response is. I don't know that these problems are inherent to the book but probably to all books like this. At the end of the day, I ended up using wifi and google translate a ton.

I'm really disappointed in this book. It's a great size, will fit in pocket or purse. It's British, that's the first difficulty. Just different enough to make it cumbersome. It's aimed at young people traveling on their own, rather than the general traveling public which ranges from those who go on a shoestring, families, and folks on tours. That's the second problem, it's manageable but focused mostly on the one group and what they might do. The worst thing is the organization. You have to guess where in the book things like thank you, please, etc are--it's fine to have chapters about various situations you might encounter, but only if you know what the editors considered the appropriate situation. There's a smallish dictionary in the back, a great idea, but the aforementioned basics like please and thank you and how much and numbers and time are not in it, I guess because somehow you're supposed to know what particular chapter they were covered in so you can flip back. This particular book was suggested by the tour company we're going to Italy with some time later this year, but I won't bother taking it along. I'll get something that's more straightforward.

I bought this book recently for my travel to Costa Rica. My Spanish is extremely limited to a few basic phrases like "Como estas" and "Hola". I found this book extremely useful. The book is well organized into chapters. I was able to quickly form short sentences to communicate with shuttle drivers, hotel staff and the local Ticos in Costa Rica. I got so hooked to speaking Spanish that I was reading this book whenever I got a chance to get better at my Spanish skills. Highly recommended.

This pocket guide was wonderful for learning common phrases and communicating w/locals in Baja, Mexico. Very helpful! I learned so much from this guide just flipping through it before my vacation. Translations & phrasing are easy to understand & repeat. I gave it only 4 stars b/c I needed it to have a more comprehensive Spanish/English dictionary. It did not contain about half of the words I looked up (mainly from street signs, menus, and conversations).

Love the Lonely Planet phrasebooks. tThey're well organized and have handy and useful translations. I always mean to brush up on the language before traveling but end up totally blanking and pantomiming when in country. Thanks, Lonely Planet, for saving copious embarrassment.

It was just what I needed: a small, practical dictionary with some cultural notes for traveling in South America. The pronunciation guide is better than most, and it is easy to navigate. It takes up little space and is light. Glad I got it!

I'm a Cuban American woman who is looking to learn Spanish so that I can eventually visit the country of my culture. This book makes it simple and easy and has all the key phrases that you would need to know when traveling.

We took this phrasebook as well as the Rick Steves phrasebook on a recent trip to Italy. We ended up using the Rick Steves nearly all of the time. It was just better organized and easier to navigate, plus it had more phrases and (for me) better pronunciation guides. The books were actually fairly similar, but we were especially grateful for Rick Steves when we got sick unexpectedly and discovered that the RS book had almost twice the vocabulary for health/medical issues. This is not a bad phrasebook, but if they are a similar price the Rick Steves is better.

In this book Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence books, chronicles Dalai Lama's latest efforts to promote an ongoing conversation between Western scientists and practitioners of meditation and Buddhism. It includes a number of interesting chapters that outline the methods and results Western scientists have been able to produce by studying the state of the mind of highly trained meditators. It also explores negative emotions, ways to understand them, and ways to avoid them. Personally, I found the book very thought provoking and absorbing. You will definitely question your own emotional states, moods, and personality. If you have never read anything about the Dalai Lama or practiced meditation, it's impact may be lessened.

"Destructive Emotions" is an account of one of the earliest meetings of the Mind and Life Symposium. These events started as a way for the Dalai Lama to learn how western science can be compared, contrasted, and perhaps integrated - as he has said repeatedly, "If science proves Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism must change."This particular meeting drove Richard Davidson's original imaging experiments examining the effects of meditation on the brain. By showing how meditation affected brain structure and activity, the scientific arguments for meditation were made. The description of the experiments and their implications is a major feature of this book, and is worth a read for anyone interested in the origins of the mindfulness movement.For a document covering both science and spirituality, it's surprisingly accessible. Daniel Goleman writes lucidly. You don't need to be a scientist or a Buddhist to enjoy reading this book.

In general, I liked this book and found it useful. I thing it contains a lot of good concepts, but because of the dialogue format it is difficult to get one's arms around all the concepts. There are also some holes that are left unaddressed, again probably because of the format.Given the above context, I think that there are many gems in this book and a lot of practical advice. Reading the dialogue between all these prominent people is thought provoking and challenges you to consider the underlying assumptions of your own emotional life.There is a lot of good advice in this book about handling destructive emotions, but the scope is actually wider than that. I found it to be more of an exploration of the nature of emotion and how to live with emotions in a balanced way.There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach to writing. There are a number of reviews that praise this book and others that shoot it down. I think the reality is somewhere in the middle.The people engaged in the dialogue are great choices, but somehow when the book went to print I think the written form missed capturing the full spirit of what went on at the actual event. I wasn't there, but I get a sense that in the transfer from speaking to writing some important meanings didn't come across.In spite of my feedback above, I wouldn't be discouraged from buying this book. It is unique and has a lot to say. My three star rating is merely an indication that I think the information could have been presented better and perhaps elaborated on in a way that brought the concepts more to life.

Years ago, thinking the Dalai Lama doesn't lead a normal life in the midst of a chaotic society, I did not study his teaching until I had a chance to read this book. Boy was I wrong! He understands human emotions at the deepest and most profound level that no man or psychologist has before. When translated and explained in lay men's terms, I can now hope that Buddhism will bring tremendous relief to the stressed out working population of the US. We allow our negative emotions too much control.This book will lead most of us out of our dark cell into a happier place.

This is the evidence that shows why we are suffering so much and it provides a wonderful way of handling our emotions. It describes a series of talks between western scientists and the dalai lama with other buddhist masters, where they all discuss about destructive emotions. The buddhist perspective on this topic is very interesting and I am sure we all can benefit from it.

It was so inspiring to read the extraordinary life and journey of the founder of Qatar Sheikh Jassim bin Mohamed bin Thani.Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world now and we owe it to Sheikh Jassim and all the great leaders of this nation.I highly recommend this book especially to the Qatar's new generation.

This book has been published almost a century after Jassim's death, and the book is a timely and absorbing biography of a most neglected statesman; a true player in the high imperial drama of the nineteenth century. I liked the concise and elegant overview of Qatar's history up to the 1830s.It is clear from this light yet very readable, scholarly work that the author has read his way through copious diaries, reports and correspondence in the Qatari, Turkish and British archives. He has resurrected Jassim for himself, wherein lies the importance of this biography. Additionally, there are a many personal elements that give this book unique value - specifically the translation of (regrettably) few verses of Jassim's poetry, the loving but tense relationship with his father and a masterful characterization of the Englishman William Gifford Palgrave, who has suffered little at the hands of British historians to date.Althani does not shy away from handling more sensitive topics which resonate with today's sensibilities - the issue of slavery, the expulsion of Indian merchants, the bloody events at Liwa in the 1890s, his admiration for the Salafist movement and even his tacit support for gun-running. The contextualization of these issues brings a `walts-and-all' reality to a well-researched book.

One day in the country’s famous Villaggio shopping mall, the cover of this book caught my eye, in a murky background an old Arab man held a flag ridding on an Arabian horse, looks weak, yet stubborn and with kind of invincible spirit, this made me suddenly think about that famous portrait Napoleon Crossing the Alps, that painting is almost perfect to reflect the warrior’s greatness, just one regret it was not accurate, Napoleon was actually on a mule when crossed the Alps. This amazing cover design, without too much glorifying the character, it gives me a feeling of genuiness. I finally bought this book.The content of book truly didn’t disappoint me, the writing of this book was initially inspired in the author’s childhood story, yet the book was not that kind of folklores, the stories inside were well researched, there are quotes, reports, etc. from various British, Turkish adventurers and diplomats’ sources, making the contents really reliable. The way of the story telling is really British in my opinion, reading it just like reading that British Economist newspaper, serious yet very interesting.Jassim was a remarkable leader, he used his vision and political skills to unite the Qatari tribes, to kept a balance between colonial powers, a grand master of trouble shooter of internal and external conflicts. His visionary thought and contribution set the foundation of The State of Qatar, he is truly the Leader, the Founder of this Country. Along reading his personal political career, you will also get to know a lot about the Arab tribal culture, tradition and their ways of doing politics and waging wars. You will also get something to feel the hardships of pearling, cruelty of the piracy, tribal conflicts and colonial wars.For this year’s Eid holiday, I spent one day to drive through the country, from Doha, the capital to its Southernmost and Westernmost points. Driving through desert was exciting and relaxing, to my surprise, by the road you will see a lot of woods with big trees, it is different from the Jassim’s time, which was a miserable desert without any vegetations. Except for its hot weather, I experienced a country full of potentials, the country’s ruler has a good vision to diversify and expand their economy, and they are just happening. I recommend everybody who is interested in Qatar, in the GCC region should read this book, especially the expatriates who will work in the region.

So far I'm only up to the 3rd chapter and I have to say I've learned quite a bit already. I'm not new to programming, but I am kind of new to OOP. I used VB back in 2005-2006, but hadn't touched it since. This version seems to be a lot better, especially since I use Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition.

Focuses on forms, which might put advanced practitioners off, but the title is "Beginning...", and it does a great job of that, with real window(s) applications being developed instead of the console.writeline() outputyou will be using in so many other books.

I already knew Visual basic but bought this book to update myself to the later version. It is well written and worth the price to learn a lot of the visual basic methodology.

This book is a wealth of information which not only tells the "how" of Visual Basic but the "why" too. There is vastly more depth here than in the book I read prior to this one, which was Visual Basic 2015 in 24 Hours by James Foxall. The Foxall book starts with the Visual Studio 2015 IDE and works into the code. This book starts with the code and works outward to cover various aspects of the IDE. That said, I'm glad I went through the Foxall book before this one.But part of the learning process, it seems, is working through the bugs in the programming books.Below are some glitches and annoyances I recorded as I worked my way through this book. And yes, I checked the errata for the book and found none of these. Weirdly there are no page numbers for this book in the Kindle edition, so I can't refer to pages.Chapter 7 Displaying Dialogues.In the message box section. System.Windows.Forms.MessageBoxButtons.OKCancel worked. MessageBoxButtons.OKCancel did not. system.windows.forms worked. windows.forms alone did not.Step 5 of working with the PrintDialog control.Putting the code before the class declaration works, not "at the top of the class."Chapter 10 Building ObjectsIn "Creating an Object and Adding a Color Property." Following Step 2 gets me two "Sub Main" statements, but only one is allowed.In "Inheriting from Car" step 6. "Dim objCar As New SportsCar" got me a duplicate object definition error.Why do authors of these books so often say to remove code and type in other code? Why not have the reader comment out code and add new code, then there's something to revert to if the new code doesn't work.Chapter 11.Scanning Favorites. Step 4. WebFavorites worked. WebFavoriteCollection did not.Chapter 12Figure 12.7. Sloppy database diagram. Roster ClassID should be shown linked to the Class ClassID, not just randomly pointed at the box representing Class.Chapter 13Binding simple controls step 3. I have Windows 10, and I just went to Settings/Update & Security/For developers and set my machine to Developer Mode.In step 6 of the Tic Tac Toe app the opening "<" of the first Grid tag is missing, causing all that code to fail when entered or copied into the IDE.In step 7, the author writes, "Open the code behind for MainPage.xaml." Well there no "code behind" in the IDE, so how about explicitly telling me what to do in the IDE rather than using jargon when I'm just learning this stuff?Also in this step is a missing "end if" before an "end with" that caused a compile error.All that notwithstanding, this might be the best introduction to Visual Basic 2015 out there right now. I'm glad I slogged through it.

The explanation of why the pilot sits in the seat on the right side is wrong. Regardless of where the "pilot" sits, that person's right hand must stay on the cyclic stick basically at all times. (The left hand operates the collective, but it can be locked in place and the left hand used for other things during straight-and-level flight.) It the "pilot" is in the left seat, the radios, transponders, etc., that are in the console between the seats or the right side of the instrument panel or overhead on the centerline are out of reach of the pilots free (left) hand. Raised my skepticism level too much. What things that I don't know about are also wrong?I found this modern article on the subject: "Why do helicopter pilots sit in the right seat?" at airspacemag.com

This is one of the best and up to date books on rotocraft that I have read. It is an extensive, thorough work which is engaging and informative. I like how the author develops rotocraft theory and traces the origins of the machine from the simple early developments to modern technological advances. The pace of the book is effective and it logically flows to ensure that clear, concise coverage is given to all areas and stages of development of helicopters in both a technological and an historic perspective, which is rarely seen in books on rotocraft. It is also quite entertaining and is a great book both for the aviator and the general population. I highly recommend this book.

This book focused on the various uses of helicopters and the people who flew them. It is well written and the stories are quite interesting but I was looking for more technical information and the details of helicopter development.

Very interesting read. It takes a very in depth look at rotorcraft from the very beginning to the high tech marvels we have today. I couldn't put it down.

Then the last few chapters lifted me with Love.I've found new great authors from this book, and have ordered the complete text from Eva Bell Werber and Ruby Nelson I enjoyed them so much. What especially impressed me is that somehow the chapters were edited so that it didn't seem like quotes but rather reading text, and even though each chapter was from a different author it actually read as a coherent book from chapter to chapter. Its beautiful to read out loud and its the kind of work you can read over and over. You won't be disappointed.
