This book was touching, rich, and absolutely gorgeous. Auxier is one of the best storytellers I've ever read, and this book is my favorite yet. It was impossible to put down! I recommend it for kids 11 or 12 and up, as it tackles emotionally difficult things that I think young teens will appreciate more than younger kids. Five stars-- my favorite book of the year!

One of the hardest parts of parenthood is the certainty that one can't protect your kid from pain, but desperately wanting to anyway. It looks like loving something fragile, sheltering them while you can and then hoping they are strong enough to stand on their own when you can't shield them any longer. Its heart breaking really. Recently my daughter was diagnosed with T1D and it's been a tough season of grief and pain for us all. This book was balm for my parent-crushed heart.The story of Nan, the Sweep and her soot golem is one you won't soon forget. Its a story about parenthood but also (and maybe moreso if you're not me) friendship, child labor, death, helping others, abandonment, activism, magic, religion, hope and healing. It will touch your heart and is very hopeful and beautiful.I've been a fan of Auxier since his first book was released. Often as I've read his stuff, I have questioned... "wow, did he just put that in a kids book? That's a little scary" or sad, or whatever and you know what, he does and it's what makes his stuff so good. It feels honest. Life can be creepy, or devastating. Books can help adults and kids alike process, celebrate, remember and hope. This is a book I'd recommend to every parent and mature kids either older (like 12), or younger ones who have known sadness/loss at too young an age. This book acknowledges grief but leaves a bit of room for magic and ends with hope. Brilliant.

I’m in the middle of moving house but I just couldn’t put this book down. It’s the story of a girl and her monster, yet I think any mother could relate to the girl as she “raised” her monster. The joys and frustrations that Nan experienced teaching her monster made me laugh at times. But Nan is also still very much a child and the story broke my heart at times. I am planning to use this book as a way to help my American children understand the struggles and abuse that exploited children around the world face. Auxier gave several resources in the back of the book to aid parents and teachers in educating children about child labor yesterday and today.

I loved this book! I read it aloud to my older three kids (10, 8 and 7) and we all fell in love with Nan, Toby, Charlie, the Sweep and the gang. All of Jonathan’s books are worth reading! I love bonding with my kids over stories and this one is pretty much as good as it gets.

Wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL! As others have said, Jonathan captivated us with Peter Nimble and keeps drawing us into more heart-widening themes with each successive novel. SWEEP is not just a story about a girl and her monster, but it is each of our stories as well. We are reminded that through "saving others we save ourselves", and that this is not a once and done part of life, but a cycle of saving and being saved. Sweep is a story that reveals the truest of truths, one that we read, and one that in turn, reads us. With warmth, precision, and humor, Jonathan brings us into a world that exposes our own (broken) hearts and leads us further along that path to our true selves. A beautiful read for young and old alike!

This book is wonderful. Auxier has a knack for weaving stories together that both delight and guide the reader. Every word is intentional and this particular story is so rich in content and meaning. My only critique is that I couldn't put it down and thus finished entirely too quickly!!

Jonathan Auxier has done it again. Another A+ story. But this time the part-fantasy tale is lived out in an historical setting. I found that leaning the facts about a Victorian sweep’s life was as important in this story as was the captivating plot. Highly recommend this book.

It also happens to be a good guide to all the cities along the route, and to train travel in Russia in general.If you're going trans-Siberian, the author assumes that you'll be endowed with enough common sense to use metric figures and tell right from left (or, in this case, east from west), so the book isn't dumbed down with filler material. The practical information is rich, and is really an appropriate survival guide for how to do this thing without killing yourself. Everything from how to make your booking to how to keep yourself reasonably clean is included.The content is very, very good, and resembles a guide for a religious pilgrimage. I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this book and other books I own covering the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Is has that kind of feel. All the details about each stop, including the things you're most likely to want to see, are included.If you're serious about doing this, or if you're just interested in some of the places other Russian travel guides overlook, this is your book.

This is the guide to buy if you plan to ride the Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian, Trans-Mancurian or the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM). This is a great guide for the tTrans Siberian train trip, I just went in June 2013. It is a must have. It was good to have a list of train stops and length of the train stops for all of the scheduled stops on the route. The kilometer markers on the route and the description of what is is there is really great. It did not cover the 2 hour unscheduled stop we had in the middle of the night, when lighting hit at a electric power station, all of the trains are electric powered.Buy the guide, have a great trip, I did.

There are only 2 up-to-date travel guides for those adventurers who want to travel the Trans-Siberian Railroad. This one is recommended by most of the blogs I have checked. It is up to date and very thorough. I am about 1/3 of the way through it and have already started making lists.

I haven't gone on my big trans-Siberian trip yet but have started planning. This book is very detailed it is very helpful in planning. It contains information about all of the different routes, hotel info in each city, advice for buying tickets, etc. I read a review before I bought it about how the old version was better so I was nervous to buy this one. Now that I received it, I'm glad that I bought the new version because times and prices are more up to date. I haven't seen the old version but this one is as helpful as I expected/wanted it to be.

A must book if you travel by Transiberian or Transmongolian

Anyone considering taking the Trans Siberian should read this. Except for the exchange rate differances, the book is the essential bible for the trip. I stuck it in my backpack in London and read it all the way through to Vladivostok. I highly recommend it.

There is a much greater variety of recipes than I anticipated. Am not familiar with some of the ingredients, but should be able to find them as I live just outside Houston. If it can't be found there - it can't be found in the country.Really looking forward to using this book!

Love this old cookbook. Had a paperback and the binding fell apart with the years of use. So I found this on Amamzon. There's a little tear at the binding but that's ok and I was forewarned of that. Took the picture of the chef from the paperback and glued it to the inside for old times sake!!

The author wondered if her book would do her co-workers justice and tell their story. I believe it did that with a mix of intimate emotion and harsh reality.

Every manger should be required to read this book to develop empathy to the plight of those who work on the assembly line.

Solange de Santis' account of life on a car assembly line is a well-written, informative, page turner, albeit without the edge or the humor of Ben Hamper's "Rivethead." Her drive to understand the lives of people who did not have the privilege of growing up in the middle class is commendable. There is, however, one consequence of her actions that she never seems to contemplate: by choosing to take a job on the line, she in effect took it from another person who did not have the same options and for whom it would have been the best economic opportunity. For me, this phantom was present throughout the book.

How many Ivy-League educated journalists would be willing to break their backs and go work on the assembly line to relay this story authentically? Very few! This writer does, and so gets to know the tasks, the workers and the business of making vehicles from the most telling perspective of all. Thoroughly familiar with the corporate point of view from years of business writing, De Santis joins those people whose sweat and toil actually build our world. She gives us the private musings and dreams of hardworking folks who didn't get all the breaks in life that she did, and shows their courage and determination to survive the brutal decisions of an unfeeling corporation. It's sad that management just can't understand the rage of these people whose jobs have been given a death sentence for the sake of higher profits, yet who are expected to give 100% down to the last day. But their voices need to be heard.

Solange De Santis was obviously not looking to "rip the lid off" assembly line work when she began either her experience at GM or her book. This is greatly to her credit. LIFE ON THE LINE does all readers the service of allowing them to make up their own minds. The author's point of view develops in the text at the same pace as her time passed on the line.Crisp and insightful, this book can stand with the best of writing on the subject. The twofold treat is that those with no "shopfloor" experience may come to value more highly those who toil, and those who work on the line may be able to understand that they can be recognized and appreciated by ones not standing next to them in the heat and din.Brava! I had to read this for a class I took, so I wasn't anticipating reading it. However, it turned out to be interesting. For those of you who wonder what it's like working in a car assembly plant, this is for you. It's even better that it's from a woman's point of view. Really hits home now that the Big 3 are going through such bad times.

Ms.De Santis begins with the valid premise that the gulf between white-collar and blue-collar workers in widening, and that it's important for one group to understand the other. From there, she walks her readers through that life with an authenticity that only her real-life experience could provide. Interesting reading for anyone who cares about the present and future of manufacturing in North America.

The problems: We've found two mistakes in the answer key so far (through Chapter 9), and I think that once or twice the questions have been a little too esoteric based on what's covered in the chapter. Generally speaking, though, the questions are written at a challenging but appropriate level for our 8-year-old (although I can't imagine using the tests for a child any younger). These little problems do not outweigh the usefulness of the tests in general. We've found them helpful enough that I would still recommend them to others as a means of ensuring that a student is comprehending the materials in the Story of the World text.

Bound tests and answer key for the Story of the World V 3 are just as anticipated. Set of chapter tests in multiple choice or matching format, and grading key. Bound and 3 hole punched.

This test book was so helpful when I was using the Story of the World Vol. 3 history book. It saved me so much time when I didn't have to come up with my own tests. I really liked the mix of fill in the blank, multiple choice, and long answer questions for each chapter. I'll definitely use it when we study this era again in a few years (with my younger kids...)

I like this book for a "test" book for my children. It is easy to understand for the children when they complete the: fill in the blank, true and false, or essay questions. Would recommend this book with the activity book.

We love the Story of the World series for History in our homeschool. We started with this series with the very first one, and will probably use them all. It's chronological and very easy to understand. The tests can be pulled out and kept in a folder for review.

My kids get so excited about doing this! 4th grader requests it every day, and it works beautifully for the 1st and Kinder levels as well. I'd call that a homeschooling win. :)

Love this series. I actually use it for an older child than recommended and provide supplemental materials to flesh it out. Great history overview!

I am a homeschooler of a 9 year old and these books make history fun. My son loves to read them like a novel and when I grade his tests, he retains the information at a high rate. I think this is due to the narrative style she uses.

In this dated history of Berlin, the author posits the idea that buildings, statues, ruins, and architecture in general matter. Yes, they do. Places like the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, Hitler's chancellery, Prussian palaces and street names reveal a lot of about the citizens of Berlin. Especially in how these places' history and present and future are debated. I am reminded of the phrase that nothing is as dated as yesterday's vision of the future. So while this book excels in recapping the history of particular sites, especially the debates about reconstruction, the book itself is hopelessly out of date. A lot has happened in Berlin in the past twenty years. And some of the debates of the book are settled. This book needs a serious update to reflect the landscape of Berlin in the 21st century.The author does a good job of injecting the voices of the debate into his story at the beginning of each of the chapters through the use of quotes. But he also has a tone and a pessimism that is a bit off-putting, especially when he states "Politicians and architects who want to put to rest the ghosts of Berlin are probably doomed to failure." I disagree. Vehemently. The author should go to Berlin today in 2016 and see if still agrees with that statement of his.Still, there was a lot of good material and the author captured a snapshot of a time now long past. Thankfully. I am quite happy that the Berlin of the 21st century is a dynamic city that is once again capturing the imagination of the world.

Brian Ladd brings forth a wonderful treatise of just how Berlin is transforming itself after its reunification after the Cold War. I can think of no other city in the world carrying as much baggage as Berlin. Ladd's approach in dealing with the ghosts of Berlin is to give a history lesson as to the specific areas and neighborhoods within the city limits. In doing this the author deals with the architecture of the city. He explains how certain areas developed and how the architecture of those areas came to be. The historical significance of structures is explained by Ladd. He explains structures that had political and historical significance even they no longer exist. Such was explained at the beginning in explaining the Berlin Wall. From that point on, Ladd delves into Old Berlin with its palaces and Medieval Berlin with The Nikolai Quarter. He goes onto explaining the significance of The Brandenburg Gate with its rich history and how the structure has changed and been rebuilt several times. Such famous structures dominant in late 19th century and early 20th century from The Reichstag, The Mietskaserne and the development of Potsdamer Platz bring forth arguments in Berlin as to rebuild these areas as they were or not to do so. Hence the Berliners are at a quandary as what to do about their history. Should Berlin rebuild as of old or wipe the slate clean with a new and different Berlin. The arguments become more intense especially with such structures brought forth during the twelve year rule of Nazi Germany. Many Berliners want all presence of old Nazi structures to be gone forever. However there is an argument that Berliners must never forget the misdeeds of their heritage. These are difficult arguments which must be eventually brought to a head. Ladd explains the ruins of post WWII Berlin and what was destroyed and how East Berlin differed in its architectural development from how West Berlin dealt with rebuilding. When I was stationed in Germany in 1970/71 I went to Berlin three times. Not only was I in West Berlin but as a soldier I had access to go to East Berlin. What I saw startled me. In West Berlin you saw new infrastructure everywhere. New roads, new buildings with current technology were prevalent throughout West Berlin. West Berlin was a ray of sunshine amid the darkness of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin. Once you crossed over at Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin, you saw the drabness of the color gray. There was no sunshine! Buildings were scarred with shrapnel indentations and the roads resembled the Ho Chi Minh trail on all side streets. Ladd explains some of the attempts such as Stalinallee which was developed to impress the West. However in all reality most of East Berlin resembled ghetto areas of slums which were barely adequate and was in stark contrast to West Berlin. Ladd also deals with the monuments so prevalent both in East Berlin and West Berlin. Arguments are detailed as to what should be retained and what should be destroyed. Heavy and meaningful arguments come from both sides. This shows to us the quandary when dealing with the ghosts and the history of this city. Ladd shows a city in transition, which truly shows to one and all just how flexible and forward looking are the people who call Berlin their home. This is a haunting book which deals with a city trying to move onto the future with a careful eye on the past. Great read!!

Provides a great insight into the history of Germany and its architecture. Was required to buy it for my foreign study abroad class and ended up greatly enjoying it. Lots of great insights and extremely in depth view on the significance of Nazi architecture and its current impacts. Additionally my Host mom loved the perspective it provided and enjoyed reading it. Not to long of a read and excellent chapter divisions. You get a lot of information for a fair price.

I agree with the other reviewers who praise this book as a great combination of history and architectural guide. Even if you don't plan to visit Berlin, the book is excellent in showing how choices about monuments and architecture have larger symbolic value in expressing a culture, and for Berlin the question of what "culture" to express after World War II is especially fascinating. This book is especially valuable in conjunction with an actual visit to Berlin. I fortunately discovered it on Amazon during my time in Berlin and was able to download it to my Kindle. (I wish I had known about it beforehand, and I didn't see it in Berlin museum bookstores.)This is a must-read book for anyone visiting Berlin, anyone with a strong interest in the city, or anyone interested in how choices about an urban landscape express the values of a culture.
