I thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection of medieval tales to my 4-year-old daughter. Though the illustrations are beautiful, keep in mind that, for the young, this is a text-heavy book. The author completely won over the amateur linguist in me in her introduction when she stated that as she compiled these tales, an intriguing subtext emerged: the story of the development of the English language itself. In a bow to that subtext, she begins each story with a cover page that has a single sentence taken from an untranslated version of the tale, followed by the modern English translation of the sentence. Fascinating! I was also impressed that she managed to collect stories that represented so many subgenres of Medieval literature: epic, lais, etc.The stories are wonderful and well-written; this is a book that parents and kids will return to again and again. Other top picks: SanSouci's Young Merlin, Young Arthur, Young Guinevere, and Young Lancelot books, all beautifully illustrated and exciting; and James Baldwin's Fifty Famous Stories Retold, which, aside from being a page-turner, is a book that EVERYONE should read for the sake of cultural literacy.

I highly recommend this book for adults. It is a supurb book for those on the "read and reread" path in building a foundation before pursuing the works in their more complex formats. Years ago I had the misfortune of reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in old language. It was a disaster and embittering. I left the experience with an "allergy" to Sir Gawain, and without getting to know the gest of the story. I am healed thanks to this particular book. I was also delighted to come across the "Werewolf" as I hadn't heard about it.A book that can break down a block such as I had developed is a worthy one. I hope it heals another.

These stories are interesting and well-written. We didn't like this book as much as Mary Pope Osborne's books of Greek myths and Norse myths, but it was still interesting and I was at the age of 50 glad to FINALLY find out who Beowulf was!

My son is frequently picking up this book and choosing a tale to read.

Wonderfully adapted for young readers, the stories are distilled into short but accurate depictions. The pictures are well chosen, and the ancient stories titilate my kindergartener and first grader. Mrs. Osborne, we applaud you!

Excellent book, Great condition. We enjoyed reading it.

I collected this book when I was an English Literature major in college. It is beautifully illustrated in a rich medieval-style. Each story has its own title-page on which are samples of the original text-language then translated into English. Osborne then offers a simple language retelling of each tale. My children studied medieval history this year and, when I wanted a way to give them broad exposure to Literature from the period in language they can understand, I pulled this off the book shelf and dusted it off. Tales found in this book are: Finn MacCoul, Beowulf, The Sword in the Stone, Island of the Children, The Song of Roland, The Werewolf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Robin Hood and His Merry Men and Chanticleer and the Fox. This book would make a fine addition to any home-library.

Like all of Mr. Smith's book, this is fabulous. For some reason I started with volume 3 and have worked my way back. This book is so meaty and chock full of details and diagrams. Like Mr. Smith's other books, there is nothing "fluffy" about it. Anyone looking for a "make it tonight!" picture book should buy something else. But for the serious student of bookbinding this series is an absolute must. I read and reread Mr. Smith's books, and I learn something new every time.

Can't recommend this book highly enough for learning some non-adhesive book binding. The book is number one a series of three by Keith Smith on non-adhesive binding. Very detailed. Excellent diagrams of difficult sewing sequences, for example the binding off of the final cover of a Coptic-stitch bound book. This book is also a good place to begin studying book binding as it includes less complex binding like pamphlets to get your feet wet.

I enjoy journaling on blank pages and subsequently binding them into journals. Keith Smith's book on non-adhesive binding is an excellent resource for learning non-conventional binding and book structures.I enjoyed the book so much, I eventually made mock-ups of nearly every project in this book AND went on to worth through several other of Smith's books.Smith provides many basic/general techniques in the front of the book followed by specific "recipes." He provides both creative suggestions for content and technical information on structure and assembly. Smith also provides sample photographs of each binding.One minor criticism: many of the projects suggest using very heavyweight paper--almost watercolor paper--instead of textweight or lightweight. I had to tweak the instructions for binding the lightweight paper I use for journaling.

Excellent book. The amount of time it took him to get into the actual material was rather irksome (several rather artsy "visualize the book" chapters before getting to the bindings), but that is a sign of the author being passionate about his work and is a credit to him. I was a bit surprised that one part of the book took material almost verbatim from Shereen LaPlante's "Cover to Cover". Even so, this is a seminal work that should be in every bookbinder's working library.

Keith Smith's books are a very valuable and reliable source of information for the serious amateur or professional bookbinder. I have collect all five of his non-adhesive binding books and dont think I could work without them. They have introduced me to bindings unfamiliar to me and have shown me how to make them. Sometimes I have trouble understanding his more complicated diagrams, but if one starts by reading the Vol.1, it helps to understand how he draws his more complicated diagrams later on. This is a great book for a beginner.

For anyone who binds their own sketchbooks you NEED this book. Keith Smith's bindings are out of this world and everybody I know that is into making their own journals or books has THIS book in their bookcase. Very detailed diagrams of the stitchings for lots of different bindings and I learned a lot from this book. A must have!!

The guy is a genious. That's a fact.But he kind of drag you inside his dream of bookbinding and poetry.. could be a shorter book...but he is the author !I recomend buying volums 2 and 5.

Seven library books and one other purchased on amazon did not give me the information contained in 1/4 of this book. The instructions are clear, the diagrams good and the author also gives details on the benefits of a particular binding. If someone were to ask me to suggest one book for learning how to bind a book, this would be the one. Thank you Keith A. Smith!

This is my second copy, I wore out the first one. It isn’t a book that you sit down and read multiple chapters and when you finish put it on your book shelf and forget about it. Read one chapter a day, and mull it over. When you finish the last chapter, begin again. You may feel during the first, and possibly the second reading that this isn’t for you. It was so with me. But stick with it. I did an then happily spent about 7 years reading it 6 times. With each reading I connected more and more. At first, maybe one in ten chapters hit home. By the 7th almost every chapter hit home. Your faith will grow, your understanding of your faith will grow. You will feel yourself becoming closer with Christ. It has contributed more to my spiritual life than anything previously, and I am 80.

This is a reprint of the 1954 book. I love it! Each meditation is only two or three half-height pages. Seriously good stuff that you can't plow through. My head is spinning if I read more than one at a time. I can go over and over the points of these meditations and keep deriving benefit. Put this next to your bible and your catechism. The trio can supply the substance of all the prayer you have time for!

This book is excellent for those wanting a deeper spiritual walk. However, would recommend having a spiritual director to couple with these beautiful meditations. Someone who is overly scrupulous could be more frustrated than drawn closer to Our Lord with this book. The meditations are a meaningful discussions with God and the "think" part at the end of each is very well done. Only takes a few minutes each day but can have a profound impact on your life if you allow it.

This is a Catholic daily devotional & as a Protestant, I can honestly say, it's the best daily devotional I've ever read. I reread this book about every other year & I give it out as a gift to my various Catholic friends. It makes a lovely gift at a very reasonable price.

This book was a gift to me several years ago and I read a chapter every day...along with my other daily readings. I like the format of this book: 1st...: it's like Jesus is speaking to you. 2nd... it directs you with something to think about. And 3rd....it directs you in prayer on the reading. Something always speaks to me.I have ordered this book numerous times and give it to friends who I think could benefit from it and enjoy it as much as I do. It only takes a few minutes for each chapter. Once you get through the book. you just start over. It is not one of the ones that have a date attached to it.

No better way to begin each day meditating on Christ and His teachings. Full of Catholic truths and Christian teachings. It helps you to dig deep , and reflect on our life and how we are trying to be more like how God intended us to be. The readings are written in such a way that helps us feel as if Christ Himself were counseling us.

I was given this little prayer book 41 years ago. In each chapter Christ speaks words of wisdom. The next section is to think about what Jesus is saying. The last section is to pray for a change in your heart. I read a chapter each day. When I get to the end of the book I began again. It has truly transformed my life. I now give this book to others and pray Christ helps them draw closer to him.

It is most unfortunate that the conversion to digital format is so obviously an uncorrected, unedited scan. Having read the first three books, many misspellings, dropped characters, and lost punctuation are evident. Some are key items which, if not corrected, actually change the meaning of text being quoted. No e of the illustrations are cleanly scanned, most all lack any useful detail. Every illustration which contains text is illegible in the ebooks.These are great books and deserve a higher level of attention to accuracy in the translation to bits and bytes.Read this and be ready for an enlightening journey through mankind's history. Be ready to put up with a poor quality translation. Given the fact that the whole premise of the story relies upon accurately translating ancient texts with an eye toward the Sumerian origins of the original accounts share ePub does Sitchen a disservice.Then again it perfectly illustrates how historical records are lost, mangled, or misinterpreted over time by the very people claiming custodianship.Five stars is what the book deserves. Four stars is what it gets. If the publisher ever takes time to correct, clarify, and improve upon this poorly done OCR version of the printed books I will revise my rating.

I am neither an Egyptologist, nor a Sumerologist, nor a student of archaeology or mythology of any kind. I am not fluent in any language other than my native English. I have no familiarity with any of the literature cited in this work. As such, I have zero ability to analyze the veracity of Sitchin's claims, which he apparently advances with the utmost sincerity.That said, it's a fun read. Additionally, I do not consider it all that far fetched that the ancient stories, even the fantastic ones, are in fact recollections of actual past events otherwise long forgotten. So if you're prepared to suspend your disbelief, the whole series of books is a fun ride involving extraterrestrials, genetic engineering, interplanetary warfare, and other things, all presented as logical conclusions of a serious and dedicated study of myth, legend, and archaeology.

Please, pay attention...it is a master-work of historical relevance. It cannot be ignored. But, it is also obvious why governments will not discuss these ancient truths. The information will affect the belief-system for all religions and disrupt the power of governance. It is truly amazing that we have all this historical data at our fingertips, around the world, and very few will stand up and discuss the implications.His books are eye-opening, to say the least.

This is the third book in the series that continues the journey of detailing a possible explanation of human history. I understand that not everyone will keep on open mind while reading this, but after now having read the first three books I can say that this is a very intriguing premise. Growing up and learning the traditional religious teachings, I have always had a feeling that something was missing or just didn't add up. The research in this book is very detailed and at times it definitely takes some concentration to follow all of the details. It can be a difficult read, but it is well worth it.

Continuing to read the Earth Chronicles series, this is, of course, in keeping with the level of detail and biblical support found in the first two books; however, there is a large percentage of information that is duplicated from book two. Having read books one and two, I would prefer to not have this reprised information as I interpret this as the author not having enough new information to support the number of books in the series (i.e., drawing out the information and duplicating to publish more book segments). Again, as in the other books within this series, it is an interesting commentary that poses an alternate theory of man's development and early history that is worth consideration just as much as any other story-based historical telling (The Bible, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Persian, Greek and Roman histories, etc.). At the very least, it provides the reader with some food for thought and further investigation while looking for answers to the eternal questions of how and why mankind has come to inhabit Earth.

Must read the Complete Series in order to understand the concept that covers 460,000 + years to present and at first you will think he is crazy but at some time you will question your belief system then by the conclusion you will know where you stand in your belief system and only Question is WHY? he does not answer that he leaves it to you and your belief system!!!

Zecharia Sitchin did a phenomenal work of research and--something extremely rare--drawing conclusions regarding human prehistory and recorded history. To me, that's the most important aspect of any investigative research: being able to draw pertinent conclusions that help answer major mysteries. Whether a reader is able to accept those deductions and settle his mind is up to him, but Sitchin certainly did his part, with integrity and courage. My only problem is the size of the books! They should not look like pulp fiction novels. This diminishes the importance of their content.

This book is great for working on a wide range of the roadster year models (I love the older ones). I've had to go back and read a paragraph or two over just to be sure that I'm on the right section for the right year (Usually after looking for the part and realizing that I'm in the younger model section and have to go back and locate the right part- lots of head scratching and cursing involved- my bad) So, that could use some work, honestly it's not too much trouble, but, I'm old and grumpy. It might be helpful to lay it out for the different year models in a more aesthetically pleasing manner. Maybe by section, either way, it's a great book. I've saved thousands just by doing my own work- thank you!

Chilton was the first ever car manual I used in the 1960's, my friend's father was a top mechanic and at home he had a library of Chilton Manual's for his son and me to use so we could get the job done right the first time and save lots of time by knowing what to do. This version covers my Mazda Miata and I'm certain I will get my money's worth from the start .

I recently bought both the Haynes and Chilton manuals to have in the garage for some light reading. While the Haynes repair books used to be considered the "standard" by mechanically inclined enthusiasts, this example has been removed from that lofty perch and I would recommend the Chilton manual for a couple of very simple and critical reasons; the quality of the paper used is slightly better in the Chilton version which gives the user clearer type (easier to read) and the also provides clearer and crisper photos. The Chilton and Haynes manuals are IDENTICAL for all intents, even the same photos and illustrations are used throughout (I checked page by page and chapter by chapter, which wasn't hard since the books are not that big). The only noticeable difference between the Chilton and Haynes manuals is that the layout is slightly altered as a result of the torque recommendations being located at the front of the Haynes chapters versus the rear of each chapter in the Chilton. In the end, the better paper which was easier to read and clearer photos won out and I returned the Haynes manual since I had ordered both to compare. Neither manual was as comprehensive as they used to be, the step by step procedural methodology has been replaced by a general photo and at most a couple of paragraphs (except for the complete engine rebuild which the factory shop manual would be far better suited); at worst no photograph and a few lines of obvious instruction (in the case of the removal and installation of the convertible top the explanation is a very general overview, more akin to the account of creation in Genesis) instead of more detailed step by step instructions with photos for what is much more likely to be attempted by far more buyers of such a manual. I also own the Keith Tanner books which are more of what I was hoping for and expecting and are far better than either the Chilton or Haynes books. In the end, both the Chilton and Haynes books are better than blindly stumbling in the dark as you go about with a repair but not by very much.

Not very helpful. The instruction and detail level are not helpful in many cases--the steering wheel/airbag set-up for one, and the alignment details for another. Just about better than nothing at all. Fortunately I know enough to get the jobs done anyway--and probably could have without it.

The Motorbooks Workshop books tell you how to improve the car. Chilton tells you how to keep it running. Tinkering is part of the roadster ethic. Buy it. You'll like it. Don't forget the Japanese screwdrivers so that you don't bung up the screw heads too.

It has most of the stuff I need to fix my Miata. You could find most of this info online for free, but it is nice to have paper in hand in the garage.

Got this manual for my grandson's first car. He's already used it to replace the antenna and was very pleased to have the clear instructions and illustrations we expect from a Chilton's manual. Happy to pass along the tradition of Chilton's to my grandson. And, as always, going thru Amazon is the only way, manual was exactly as presented, arrived on time, excellent service.
