This book. This book was a gift for my boyfriend for Christmas. Not only did he read it, he's now read it many times. I've also read it. The book is extremely well written and goes through the history of American craftsmanship and tools. Different ways, in different regions, different woods, etc. This book is perfect for anyone who may have an interest in building their own tools one day, and even if you don't -- it's a beautifully written history of Americans and our evolution as farmers and hard work being done throughout the century. Full of discoveries and lost trades/ideas, I would give this book to anyone and know that I had made a solid choice. Even for someone who wouldn't normally read this kind of book, I found it to be enlightening and fun to read.

Like everything published by Eric Sloan, this book is beautifully illustrated and contains a wealth of information that would otherwise be lost - had Sloan not documented it.

It's fascinating to see all the clever tools that craftsmen used to use that we don't really see anymore, and it's a shame that many of these tools have been lost to antiquity because they're often superior to the mass-produced contemporary implements we use in modern times. This book contains a wealth of information that is extremely helpful to an aspiring woodworker, as well as someone interested in the historical values of such tools. The illustrations are very well done and the text does a good job explaining how each tool was used. I greatly recommend this.

If you love old tools and the folklore that goes with them, get this book! Sloan is tops in his field of both research and artwork. Not only do you get a wealth of information, but also a dose of humor that makes it a delight to read these tomes. There is an old fashioned charm in the country wisdom that Sloan wrote about so well. Something that is sorely missing in a lot of more recent books. I rely on this volume when doing historical artwork when I have to depict a hand tool.

Eric Sloane has been dead for some time but his skills in writing and his art live on. I have been a fan of his work for over 40 years, reading his stories time and again. I had this book on my wish list and finally decided it was time to get it. Sloane writes of a culture long gone in America, a culture that made what they needed in order to survive and prosper. It would do us all good to look at that attitude today. He has many titles out there and I am slowly filling the holes in my collection of his works.

As a collector, user, and now teacher about old hand tool use, I have enjoyed reading and sharing this book with fellow woodworkers. I especially like the beautiful pen and ink drawings. However, I wish there was more detailed information about these old tools, especial saws and planes. I guess there's just enough information for the average reader who has little knowledge about old tools, but not quite enough for old tool junkies like myself.

This was a great gift for my dad for his 90th birthday! It brings back so many memories for him and he has thoroughly enjoyed it.The item was reasonably priced, came quickly, was carefully wrapped and in great condition.

An excellent reference for the range of historical tools. It is not an exhaustive reference of the range of tools or their variations but it provides a visual example of nearly every class of tool found in the colonial period. It has filled in a lot of gaps in my understanding of colonial industry.

I love reading a book and discovering connections to others I have read. Connections and clues slipped in that make you go, " AH! That was in such and such book....". There are so many of them in this book. I've loved reading Stephen King's books since childhood, and this one was no different. Definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Mr. King's works. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

This was the novel that introduced me to Stephen king. I had always avoided his writing because I wasn't that interested in the "Horror" genre. It wasn't that I didn't like suspense- it was that I thought the whole book would be describing blood, gore, and entrails. I was soooo sooooo wrong. This book weaves a mesmerizing story that can gracefully introduce a fan of fantasy into the world of Stephen King's writing. I bought this for my son for Christmas and look forward to introducing him to The Dark Tower this summer.

Steven King has the most brilliant way of writing a story, in this story he is telling the tale of the wronged prince and his brother. The characters seem real and you can relate to each of them I will not give away any parts of the story so that you can read all about the evil magician and the things he does to try and rule and cripple the places he 'visits'. If you like fantasy stories I can recommend this one. I never found anything in the story that I didn't like or would have liked changed.

If you compare this book to most of Stephen King's other books, you'll find that, in spite of keeping some of his trademarks, The Eyes of the Dragon is actually rather refreshing. You can see that several elements of this book were created based on books that he already wrote, and yet King manages to create a brand new world with original characters, and yet not straying too far from the Hero's Journey formula. The characters of this book, from the main ones to the regular citizens are very human and very realistic. The hero and the villain have very distinct points of view and unlike several other books, they are not too aware of each others thoughts.I wouldn't go as far as calling this book a "masterpiece", but it was one of the best books from Stephen King that I read so far.

I really enjoyed this story. Stephen King being my all time favorite author. I have been reading much "heavier" books lately and it was refreshing to go into a world of fantasy and escape there for a bit. My only complaint is that this is not the first in a series - I really want to know what happens to the characters and also which character was "narrating" the book. Definitely worth the price for an easy read.

This adult fairy tale was the first book of King's that I had ever read. I was expecting macabre and horror, but this tale is nothing of the sort. Well, okay, not "nothing" - King wouldn't go soft on us. After all, Flagg (the villain from "The Stand") is his darkly evil self here and he is depicted sinisterly throughout the book in the expert illustrations that kept me turning the pages. David Palladini's work here is simply magnificent.The land of Delain is a dark one, ruled by King Roland, a man who most fancies the drink and who is a decades-long widow after his wife dies supposedly in childbirth. When evil magician Flagg murders King Roland, princes Peter and Thomas are respectively destined for the throne. Flagg fears Peter, the smarter and stronger of the two, so he imprisons him on blatently false accusations of murdering his father. Flagg then appoints Thomas as King, as he is easier to puppeteer and not smart enough or brave enough to stop Flagg. This book is a page-turner, and Peter's attempts at escape were especially poignant as to remain with me in the 20 years it has been since I have last read this book.

This beautiful and poetic tale is told from the perspective of a narrator who speaks as if he were an old friend, frequently adding his own commentary on characters' motivations and the like; just as an uncle would.King Roland is a middle-aged king who marries late in life and finds a wife who is both young and intellegent. The Royal Wizard Flagg, Roland's advisor, attempts to assassinate Queen Sasha because he dislikes her good influence. He finally succeeds in forcing the Queen's maid to kill the queen while she was giving birth to Thomas, her second child. As time passes, Peter, the older brother, grows older and he begins to show a great deal of his mother's common sense and intelligence. Flagg realizes that the Crown Prince is a far greater threat to his position as royal wizard than was Sasha. Therefore Flagg has King Roland poisoned and Peter framed for the murder.Twelve-year-old Thomas witnesses the murder through the glass eyes of the mounted head of King Roland's greatest trophy, the dragon which he once killed in an act of incredible bravery. After a brief trial, Peter is judged to be guilty, and he is locked up in the enormous tower called the Needle in the center of the city. His younger, weaker brother Thomas is then crowned King, although he is only twelve years old. Due to his youth, inexperience, and fear of both his own precarious position and Flagg, Thomas allows Flagg to become the defacto ruler, earning the hatred of the people in the process.This story is told in a lyrical, old-fashioned way that is reminiscent of the way the great fairy-tales were told in my childhood. King's prose is poetic and beautiful; it draws you in to his world and paints a vivid picture of the events that unfold before you. If you have never read a Stephen King novel because you 'don't read horror' then this is the novel for you. In my opinion it is his finest work, and it was the first novel I ever read of his. I highly reccomend this book!

I appreciated Ms. Carr's honesty and her no-holds-barred approach to her story telling. She told the story of what life was like in the fast lane of drugs and drinking. I'm really glad that she shared her life the way she did. She vulnerably shared the reality of what it looks like for drugs and alcohol to take control of and slowly erode a life. She mentioned in the book that she wrote it just a couple of years into her sobriety and I found myself wondering what her story would read like now. I found myself wishing she had more self compassion in her story telling. I felt like she was too hard on herself; blaming herself and almost rolling her eyes at her behavior instead of offering herself empathy and compassion. People don't turn to drugs and alcohol because they're low lives or divas or self absorbed. They turn to it as a coping mechanism for deep pain. Some of Ms. Carr's story hinted at that deep pain, but this wasn't the book that explored it. This one showed what a life looks like on the outside and I was grateful for the honest truth she revealed that allowed me to see that I'm not the only one who has lived a life that can look like a train wreck depending on whose eyes are seeing it and whose voice is telling it. The same story can be told with self compassion and look completely different. I hope she keeps writing and showing us what her self compassion looks like as she heals those deep wounds. People who are vulnerable enough to share books like these need to keep writing.

I am newly sober and have been reading many addiction memoirs. Many of them have a very sad and desperate tone to them (which addictions have, there are no illusions about that!) I read Last Call at the same time as Elizabeth Vargas: Between Breaths (another excellent memoir, yet truly sad and heavy). What I enjoyed about Nancy Carr's book is the honesty of her story of the chaos that accompanies alcohol and cocaine addiction. She writes the truth that there are some really funny and crazy times that come with this chaos (loved the men stories, as a single former hard partying straight woman I could completely relate). The fun was fun, until it's not fun any more. Her rock bottom was a second DUI. Mine was a Pool Boy (oh yes, she has names for hers too "Limo Boy, Old Tom, Young Tom, Beantown etc...). I also like how she doesn't seem to beat herself up in recovery - we do that enough in addiction, thank you. She tells her story with humor and wit. It is a quick and fun read.

Nancy's story begins as a multi-state, crazy romp as she hops from bed to bed, starting her love affair with booze and "Joey," the name she gives to cocaine. It's all silly fun and games until she crashes HARD with her second DUI. The second part of the story deals with her recovery in 12 step meetings. In her down-to-earth style of writing, Nancy offers her experience, strength, and hope to others who find themselves relating to her very relatable story. I felt like Nancy was telling her story to me, as a friend in recovery. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It may even save your life.

Last Call made me want to hang out and be friends with Nancy Carr. Her story is so relatable and she tells it in a engaging and straightforward style. No self-pity here. Just a direct account of what the spiral into addiction looks like and what a path to recovery can look like. She's insightful and funny, able to look at herself in a true way that will no doubt help others look at themselves. A must-read for those touched by the disease of addiction, whether they're an alcoholic, addict, family member or friend.

This book had great recommendations and because the book was highly rated, I tried to finish it but I finally quit reading after about 70% through the book. Obviously this book is well liked by the majority of people that read it so my opinion is in the minority. I found the story line was scattered at best. Too much of the book was about ridiculous relationships with boyfriends who the writer refers to as this boy or that boy. A guy that was a limo driver was “limo boy” a cocaine dealer was “bad scary boy” (or something like that), there was surfer boy, Beantown boy, on and on. The book was about every stupid guy, party and night at the bar. No substance. Had no idea what impact that this lifestyle had on the writer. It was just a sequence of sophomoric events that were not that interesting. No substance. I do appreciate the author opening up and sharing her story; that is a difficult thing to do. It sounds like this book meant something to most people who read it and they really enjoyed - I didn’t get anything out of it.A good memoir book about recovery A Girl Walks Out of a Bar by Lisa Smith. In this book the authors describes, in a way that alcoholics can absolutely relate to, the pain of waking up (once again) not remembering what happened the night before an the pain, self-hatred, and anxiety associated with it. It also described the path to recovery.

The book is was printed in 2003 and is obviously outdated now.

Given my speciality in Human Resources, communication is the key for building successful relationships with clients and candidates. The tools and the processes described in the book can flawlessly be integrated in your day-to-day life to feel their effects. I would recommend this book to anyone who believes in good communication and how when used correctly can have an immense impact in our daily activities.

Zweifel does it again, creating a collection of frank advice for good leaders. It is neither preachy nor patronizing. It gives practical tips with plenty of real life examples and stories, making the lessons memorable.

When I was introduced to this book in March of 2007, I was just putting the finishing touches on a communication workshop of my own, Mastering the Art of Listening. As a business coach, I long ago realized that most breakdowns in companies as well as relationships, occur in a world of dysfunctional communication. What inspired me about this book was it was if I had read Thomas' mind when creating my own workshop.
