Dear Reader, I hope you are a film fan, and that you are curious about the world of illusion that stunt players create for you. In my days and nights on sets, I rubbed elbows with the greats and the aspiring unknowns, along with the incredible crews and creators who make it all possible. Here are a few of my stories. I have found, as I travel the world over, that a stunt person can strike up a conversation anywhere we go. Our stories are sometimes amusing, fluffy little things and sometimes deeply tragic. And they are always biased. Over the years, some become like "fish stories," morphing into something greater than they were.Other stories reveal little lessons we learned along the way. And sometimes, like mine, our stories are those of survivors who fight daily to live normal lives in the aftermath.If you aren't familiar with movie-set terms, I have written Dalton's Dictionary to help you understand the stories. It is definitely biased. Similarly, the SCENE descriptions are purely from memory and are not intended to represent actual script excerpts. I hope you have fun with the crossword puzzle at the end with clues throughout the book.I am occasionally prone to poems, weird as that may be. They pop up every once in a while. You can easily skip them if they aren't your thing. A poem is risky for an author to do, yet stunt folks are always willing to risk, though we are not thrill seekers. We are, first and foremost, athletic artists working with skill, scientific precision and calculations.The tales here cover a very special part of my forty-year career in entertainment, sometimes slipping in some key aspects of my larger aspirations toward Acting. I just started reading this book and I can't put it down! I did a little bit of acting and stunt work a long time ago and this is bringing it all back...Great read...would highly recommend!

Lisa is a sorority sister of mine, and it was a pleasure to read how interesting her life has been working with the stars, being so courageous!

A good read for people interested in the backstory of film making.

Entertaining. Informative. Excellent history of movies and how they were made through stunt artists perspective.

It was so fun to read about all the stars and how she coped with changes so positively without falling into self pity

I was excited by the title but was left disappointed. While there were numerous stories of the movies stars Lisa had the chance to work with, the stories fell short. The bit of the crossroad puzzle was confusing. The lessons learned were not always inspiring or relative. It seemed Lisa was trying to be cute with her lessons. The writing was mediocre at best. And the format of my Kindle book was awful with breaks in the middle of the sentence.

About the Author

Will Hall, MA, DiplPW is a counselor, teacher, writer, and community development worker. Active during the University of California anti- apartheid movement, he went on to work for the Santa Cruz Resource Center for Nonviolence and the Earth Island Institute. In his 20s he was forcibly committed to San Francisco’s public mental health system, and, while in the locked unit at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder schizophrenia and put on disability. He became a leading psychiatric survivor organizer, including host of Madness Radio, co-founder of Freedom Center and Portland Hearing Voices, and a co-coordinator of The Icarus Project, and he is author of the Harm Reduction Guide to Coming Off Psychiatric Drugs, translated into 15 languages. For his work Will has received the Judi Chamberlin Advocacy award, the Portland Oregon Open Minds award, and the Stavros Center for Independent Living Disability Advocacy award. “When I was growing up, I wanted to be a magician. This is a brilliant, simply extraordinary book. Will Hall's worldviews regarding mental health suffering, wholeness, recovery, and thriving are seminal and next-paradigm. I am recommending this book to people in the peer/recovery movement all over the country. Run don't walk and buy this glorious collection of voices from the social justice movement in mental health. I am so grateful to Will for his work of the last decade: he is helping to save the world, one brilliant, vulnerable, powerful human being at a time.

I did not expect to feel the way I did about this book: when I began to read it I quickly realized that it shared the voices of people I had desperately needed to hear. I appreciated the diversity of experience and opinion represented in these interviews and essays, and was especially moved by the essays written personally by Will Hall. Someone I love has lived with a schizophrenia diagnosis for many years. Having been a witness to this experience from its inception, and having had to negotiate my own way through it, I am now waking up to different perspectives. Over the years I have seen the ways in which the medical model has failed us, despite the dedication, skill and best intentions of the medical professionals we have encountered, and despite the help of psychiatric medication that is sometimes needed. This book offers thoughtful reflections on experiences of reality that are too often dismissed as symptoms of mental illness. It is a gift to those who would not otherwise be exposed to views outside of the conventional mental health paradigm, and that includes most of us, particularly in the USA. I am deeply grateful to Will Hall for this book and for his work as an advocate, educator, and therapist. We need these voices and visions in communities everywhere.

This is a really great book. It brings to light many issues with our current psychiatric system, including forced institutionalization and medications and medical abuse. But it is a hopeful book - it makes me feel like there is definite hope for recovery and that it is possible to live a good life while struggling with extreme or altered states (usually called psychosis).

I desperately wish I and my family had this book when I was diagnosed Bipolar (ne manic-depressive) in 1989. Now an expert by experience in psychosis and in the medical model of mental illness, I have been on meds for my entire adult life. Nobody went to bat for my visions and experiences, they were always something to be fixed. Until now.Mr. Hall has assembled an important collection of essays and short histories which argue fiercely for a more modern and humane approach to mental crisis. His personal journey and journalism acumen both usher a wide range of perspectives into a coherent whole. From dissenting Big Pharma insiders like Gary Greenberg and Robert Whitaker to pioneering voices researcher Eleanor Longden, from short poignant vignettes of oppression to inspiring examples like Finland's Open Dialogue success, Outside Mental Health gives me language and support for arguments I have wanted to make with my doctors and family but never been able to.I've studied "mental illness" and consensus mental health for twenty-five years. I own the 4th edition along with this book to help me inventory my collection - I do notice some small errors in the book that I will contact the publisher about. BUT - for the money you can't get much better - THOUSANDS of photos, MASSIVE inventory old and new - pages are think, good quality allowing a red sharpie marker for checking your inventory in the book. Prices are fair and accurate. Images are clear and book we well made. If you have a very large collection this is a fantastic guide ( multiple editions combined are helpful )

Take this book with me when I go looking for figure I am missing- Great descriptions of the variances of the figurines and toys.

This is a valuable resource to any collector with a comprehensive collection of information.It needs a good technical proofreading and formatting check but it doesn't take away from the information.

This book was touching, rich, and absolutely gorgeous. Auxier is one of the best storytellers I've ever read, and this book is my favorite yet. It was impossible to put down! I recommend it for kids 11 or 12 and up, as it tackles emotionally difficult things that I think young teens will appreciate more than younger kids. Five stars-- my favorite book of the year!

One of the hardest parts of parenthood is the certainty that one can't protect your kid from pain, but desperately wanting to anyway. It looks like loving something fragile, sheltering them while you can and then hoping they are strong enough to stand on their own when you can't shield them any longer. Its heart breaking really. Recently my daughter was diagnosed with T1D and it's been a tough season of grief and pain for us all. This book was balm for my parent-crushed heart.The story of Nan, the Sweep and her soot golem is one you won't soon forget. Its a story about parenthood but also (and maybe moreso if you're not me) friendship, child labor, death, helping others, abandonment, activism, magic, religion, hope and healing. It will touch your heart and is very hopeful and beautiful.I've been a fan of Auxier since his first book was released. Often as I've read his stuff, I have questioned... "wow, did he just put that in a kids book? That's a little scary" or sad, or whatever and you know what, he does and it's what makes his stuff so good. It feels honest. Life can be creepy, or devastating. Books can help adults and kids alike process, celebrate, remember and hope. This is a book I'd recommend to every parent and mature kids either older (like 12), or younger ones who have known sadness/loss at too young an age. This book acknowledges grief but leaves a bit of room for magic and ends with hope. Brilliant.

I’m in the middle of moving house but I just couldn’t put this book down. It’s the story of a girl and her monster, yet I think any mother could relate to the girl as she “raised” her monster. The joys and frustrations that Nan experienced teaching her monster made me laugh at times. But Nan is also still very much a child and the story broke my heart at times. I am planning to use this book as a way to help my American children understand the struggles and abuse that exploited children around the world face. Auxier gave several resources in the back of the book to aid parents and teachers in educating children about child labor yesterday and today.

I loved this book! I read it aloud to my older three kids (10, 8 and 7) and we all fell in love with Nan, Toby, Charlie, the Sweep and the gang. All of Jonathan’s books are worth reading! I love bonding with my kids over stories and this one is pretty much as good as it gets.

Wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL! As others have said, Jonathan captivated us with Peter Nimble and keeps drawing us into more heart-widening themes with each successive novel. SWEEP is not just a story about a girl and her monster, but it is each of our stories as well. We are reminded that through "saving others we save ourselves", and that this is not a once and done part of life, but a cycle of saving and being saved. Sweep is a story that reveals the truest of truths, one that we read, and one that in turn, reads us. With warmth, precision, and humor, Jonathan brings us into a world that exposes our own (broken) hearts and leads us further along that path to our true selves. A beautiful read for young and old alike!

This book is wonderful. Auxier has a knack for weaving stories together that both delight and guide the reader. Every word is intentional and this particular story is so rich in content and meaning. My only critique is that I couldn't put it down and thus finished entirely too quickly!!

Jonathan Auxier has done it again. Another A+ story. But this time the part-fantasy tale is lived out in an historical setting. I found that leaning the facts about a Victorian sweep’s life was as important in this story as was the captivating plot. Highly recommend this book.

It also happens to be a good guide to all the cities along the route, and to train travel in Russia in general.If you're going trans-Siberian, the author assumes that you'll be endowed with enough common sense to use metric figures and tell right from left (or, in this case, east from west), so the book isn't dumbed down with filler material. The practical information is rich, and is really an appropriate survival guide for how to do this thing without killing yourself. Everything from how to make your booking to how to keep yourself reasonably clean is included.The content is very, very good, and resembles a guide for a religious pilgrimage. I couldn't help but notice the similarities between this book and other books I own covering the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Is has that kind of feel. All the details about each stop, including the things you're most likely to want to see, are included.If you're serious about doing this, or if you're just interested in some of the places other Russian travel guides overlook, this is your book.

This is the guide to buy if you plan to ride the Trans-Siberian, Trans-Mongolian, Trans-Mancurian or the Baikal Amur Mainline (BAM). Lots of detail - anexcellent guide to riding the Trans-Siberian and other long routes in Russia. Good maps, pictures and a mile-by-mile description of the route. In a compact take-along book you will find a ton of information to help you with your trip, including a wealth of practical information, brief history, guides to cities and towns, life aboard the train, and much more.

This is a great guide for the tTrans Siberian train trip, I just went in June 2013. It is a must have. It was good to have a list of train stops and length of the train stops for all of the scheduled stops on the route. The kilometer markers on the route and the description of what is is there is really great. It did not cover the 2 hour unscheduled stop we had in the middle of the night, when lighting hit at a electric power station, all of the trains are electric powered.Buy the guide, have a great trip, I did.

There are only 2 up-to-date travel guides for those adventurers who want to travel the Trans-Siberian Railroad. This one is recommended by most of the blogs I have checked. It is up to date and very thorough. I am about 1/3 of the way through it and have already started making lists.

I haven't gone on my big trans-Siberian trip yet but have started planning. This book is very detailed it is very helpful in planning. It contains information about all of the different routes, hotel info in each city, advice for buying tickets, etc. I read a review before I bought it about how the old version was better so I was nervous to buy this one. Now that I received it, I'm glad that I bought the new version because times and prices are more up to date. I haven't seen the old version but this one is as helpful as I expected/wanted it to be.

A must book if you travel by Transiberian or Transmongolian

Anyone considering taking the Trans Siberian should read this. Except for the exchange rate differances, the book is the essential bible for the trip. I stuck it in my backpack in London and read it all the way through to Vladivostok. I highly recommend it.

There is a much greater variety of recipes than I anticipated. Am not familiar with some of the ingredients, but should be able to find them as I live just outside Houston. If it can't be found there - it can't be found in the country.Really looking forward to using this book!

Love this old cookbook. Had a paperback and the binding fell apart with the years of use. So I found this on Amamzon. There's a little tear at the binding but that's ok and I was forewarned of that. Took the picture of the chef from the paperback and glued it to the inside for old times sake!!

I ordered this book and it was on my doorstep almost immediately! Holy moly!

This book was in good condition for a used book. It did show a little sign of wear, but it was minimal. The recipes are easy and so far the person I bought it for was in love. She has already made several and just got it as a Christmas gift. It makes me want to get one for myself now.
