Mutual fund companies, Bogle charges, care more about short-term results than long-term value, and many of them gain profits for larger parent corporations by charging investors unnecessary fees that undermine the funds' net returns. To remedy such problems, Bogle writes, mutual fund owners and their fiduciaries must exercise the corporate responsibility they now shirk, and fund boards must be reshaped to serve the interests of shareholders. He advances in all seriousness Warren Buffett's once-joking idea for a high tax on short-term trading gains and calls for a federal commission to examine the way pension funds are managed, as well as the state of our retirement systems in general. Bogle, in his book, makes an excellent case that shareholders and investors in the financial sector have been taken for a ride by those in positions of fiduciary responsibility (i.e., primarily high level corporate officers and fund managers). Bogle separates his book into four sections, one examining shenanigans at the individual corporate level (mostly involving corporate governance), the second involving shenanigans by the mutual fund industry, the third involving those by other sectors of the investment industry and the fourth, most refreshingly, proscribing a set of reforms to mitigate against the problems discussed in the previous three chapters.Bogle, in the first three chapters, does an excellent job at overviewing and elaborating on the so many ways that high-level corporate officers and fund managers have been robbing their shareholders and investors blind. These include packing corporate boards with dependent cronies that serve as de facto "yes men" in setting up their own outrageously high (at least independently of performance, which seems to bear no resemblance to performance) pay and bonuses, setting up "off book" accounts intermingled with corporate funds and then using personal funds to engage in non-market price transactions with their own companies (which, of course, always benefit them at the expense of the company), for example. It should be stressed, though, that Bogle not only examines commonly known scams such as the two above mentioned, but a whole slew. Many of these are not very well known to even many astute investors. Of course this does not bean he lists them all. The reason for this it that the book was written in 2002, immediately after the high-tech bubble of the late 1990s burst. Hence some shenanigans that came to light since then, for example the practice of "back dating", go unmentioned.In the final section of the book Bogle provides an extensive list of solutions to these many problems. Many have been already proposed by others such as Warren Buffet. Example includes providing shareholders with a greater voice, in terms of voting, with regard to officer remuneration. Another is to establish de facto independent pay boards that determine officer remuneration. A third is to separate the audit and consulting functions performed by auditing firms.The sad fact of the matter is that since this book was published about 10 years just about the only reform that Bogle has mentioned, despite the self-evident merits of the reforms he discusses, has been the portion of Sarbanes-Oxley that breaks out auditing firm's audit and consulting functions. Bogle concludes, in the final paragraphs of his book that the reforms he lays out will, eventually, be passed in his opinion because they are beneficial to share and mutual fund owners and are essential to keeping the investing public's faith in the financial markets. Unfortunately he also states, quite explicitly, that these reforms may take a very, very long time to pass. This is not very reassuring to those investors who have lost money in the past and will continue to lose money as a result of these shenanigans.

The first half of Bogle's volume gives a detailed explanation of the problems with our stock market; the second half gives his solution proposals. And if John Bogle doesn't know what is going on both openly and behind closed doors (read his qualifications), then no one does.This book describes how stock (mutual fund and corporate) managers are not "honest, competent and fair-minded...[or] doing the right thing." (p. 89) And just how the "managers' interest [are placed] ahead of the owners' interest." (p. 90) The recurrent theme is that corporate America has moved from owners' capitalism to managers' capitalism.Bogle describes "the pervasive...'happy conspiracy' among corporate managers, CEOs, CFOs, directors, auditors, lawyers, Wall Street investment brokers, sell-side security analysts, buy-side portfolio managers, and indeed investors themselves--individual and institutional alike." (p. 98)"More than one-fifth of...growth returns...during the past two decades has been siphoned off by fund managers.... More than three-fourths of the cumulative financial wealth produced...over an investment lifetime will be consumed by fund managers, leaving less than 25 percent for the investors. Yet it is the [95 million] investors ['individuals of modest means--often via retirement plans'] who put up 100 percent of the capital and assume 100 percent of the risk." (p.xxii)Not only does the author write about the "Captains of Industry" (or robber barons)--Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan and Carnegie--he deals with the current "casino mentality of so many institutional investors..." (p. 98) Yes, you will read of "the conspiracy between corporate money managers and institutional money managers. [We have] a gambler's market instead of an investor's market," declares Bogle. (p. 118)Bogle explains why "institutional investors [should] move away from their present obsession with short-term earnings of dubious validity and towards a new obsession focused on the creation of intrinsic value over the long term." (p. 114)Finally, Bogle does not let we individual investors off easy, either, by explaining "the failure of investment America to exercise its ownership rights over corporate America.As stated earlier, Bogle has solutions which you will read about in the second half of the book.

I took about a month to finish Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, in part because I wanted to slow down and try some of the advice in my life.12 Rules for Life is an interesting book. Equal parts philosophy, psychology, and self-help book, it covers a broad range of topics, with Peterson drawing from life experiences, religion, and history to build a strong case for his points and provide what seems on its surface to be very good advice for people.This is where Peterson's background as a clinical psychologist comes in handy. 12 Rules for Life is billed as an "antidote to chaos", and that is what its primary focus is. It's not great at helping you be more successful if you're disciplined and self-reliant already. As someone who always struggled with grasping the world, however, I found it very helpful.Since I started reading this book, I lost 12 pounds, went from writing five hundred words a day to three thousand words a day, started waking up earlier in the morning consistently, and have been much happier.Some of that is attributable to the fact that I was already willing to make changes, and many of the things I was doing were obviously bad ideas.But there is something to be said for the lessons Peterson teaches. They are complicated, sometimes a little indirect, and mired in allegory. This makes them more valuable, if anything. Peterson doesn't use a magic formula, he uses principles of right action. This book provides general ideas and positions that can serve as a great tool to understanding how people think and why things go wrong.Not everyone will agree with it. There is a chapter in the book where Peterson reflects on the fact that he has opportunities with clients where he could tell them one thing or another and their minds would make it to be total truth either way.Perhaps that is what Peterson has done here: perhaps most systems like this are sufficient to improve lives if brought diligently into practice.Or perhaps there is something to Peterson's words. His indictment of meaninglessness and his calls to purpose echo soundly throughout the book. There have been those who say that Peterson's calls for people to get themselves organized and his oft-mystical language is a cover for something sinister.But I don't think they've ever really listened to him.Approaching Peterson a skeptic, I was not sure that reading a book would have the power to change anything in my life. The first few chapters were met with nods, hesitancy, and the concession of points that sounded good. I wasn't hostile to him, and I found many of his points quite clever.But when Peterson delved deeper into the archetypes and depth psychology I became suspicious. I had a moderate distrust of the Jungian method; I use it to teach literature, but I did not believe in using archetypes to assess personality.Peterson's point is that we are all part of something great and interconnected. Because it is so massive, we need to be working to make sense of it. It won't happen automatically, and if we go for an easy explanation we may find ourselves walking dark, treacherous paths of misanthropy and rejection.We are complicated pieces in an even more complicated puzzle. Peterson's approach is one of self improvement. When we take steps to sort ourselves out, we also need to enter a symbiotic process of bringing order to our world.The purpose of this is not to achieve some sort of superiority. It is to achieve survival. The world will change, and we will be forced to adapt.Peterson states that "life is tragic." His point is that people need to be ready to deal with adversity. Anyone can handle good times, because that's what we are able to rest and relax during. The true test of a person comes when they lose a loved one or a job or their health. They need to make a decision: what will they do in response.Peterson uses haunting examples to illustrate what happens when this goes wrong. Using everything from Dostoevsky to the Soviet Union (and countless other insights from modern and historical figures), he creates case studies of what happens when things go wrong and people turn to dysfunction rather than improving their situation.His 12 Rules serve as a guide on how to go from that point of failure to a point of redemption, offering a series of suggestions and guidelines to take a life that is becoming corrupted by hatred of the world and everything in it and turn it into a vessel for growth and self-improvement.Is it a perfect guide to living life? No.Is it helpful? Does it give insight to great truths? Yes.

I will admit this right off the bat. I knew nothing of Jordan Peterson, or any of his ideology before reading this book. I must have existed in a vacuum, as I merely picked this book up as it was given as an "Amazon Recommends."Curious about the title, I purchased on impulse.I am very glad I did.I am not Jordan Peterson's "supposed" target audience. (I used supposed because I don't think he actually claims to have one).I am a liberal, Asian, left leaning moderate with a background in philosophy, theology and film studies. I support the women's right movement, equal pay, and I find the Republican party of today rather distasteful for the anti-science movement they espouse.That being said, this book spoke to me. It is not an easy read. I had to re-read chapters slowly to fully condense my thoughts. I agree with the critical review that stated you have to be intellectually equipped to really get the most out of this. I had to utilize my background in philosophy and religion to go beyond the surface of what the author was trying to say. This is not a book you can listen to at 2x speed on Audible and hope to retain anything, imo. You need to digest this.That being said...Peterson's deft weaving of theology, mythology, and just overall cogent arguments and viewpoints made me really respect and open up my mind to things I never fully thought about. I find it laughable that a Harvard professor/psychologist has been embraced by the "alt-right" when even a moderately close reading of this text repudiates all that they stand for.Peterson is direct. He has opinions. I don't always agree with them. But he is genuinely expressing himself, and the belief that we should all try to be better. We should all try to be more compassionate, and most of all, we all should try to understand our humanity a little more each and every there.There's no division in this book; there's just deep anguish at the current state of humanity and its capacity for evil. There's some exasperation at the way things are currently constructed in society that is in many ways lost. And most of all, there's compassion and a belief that if we all got together in a room and truly talked, the world would be a better place.I would shy away from the noise around Peterson in the headlines, on Youtube, and in how the idealogues use him (or even his own personal media narrative) to justify their twisted beliefs. Don't let the fact that the "Alt-Right" has co-opted this man to make him a mascot. Just read the book independently and make your own judgments. You'll be glad you did.

I tried. This book had so many excellent reviews.I just don’t understand.I was following nicely about lobsters and posture. It made sense.I ignored the tone, which was borderline yelling.I ignored the sweeping generalizations.I ignored the biblical passages that started to overtake every paragraph in a quasi word-salad way. I’ve studied the Bible since I could read. I know when something is off.I can only compare this book to a very long sermon, where I’m trying to follow along, and derive some wisdom. As the hours wear on, everyone is shaking their heads in agreement and I just want to go home.All I could hear were illogical statements that left zero room for elasticity and nuance. I am a human being. We all are. The author seems to set that aside and preach on...and on...and on.I felt alienated, confused and finally could take no more. I got up and left the church that this book pretends not to be.I could not have disliked this self-help book more.Never again.

A pleasant and informative book about two famed diarists and their intertwined lives and interests. Rather than a straight double biography, the author, Margaret Willes, uses the lives and personal interests of Pepys and Evelyn as springboards to examine various aspects of life in seventeenth century England, such as court politics, gardens, libraries, and plays.This book, I think, would be enjoyed by anyone interested in English history and the early development of a civilized and learned society.(Readers interested in this time period may also want to acquire a copy of the very good "Collecting the World: Hans Sloane and the Origins of the British Museum" (2017) by James Delbourgo. There are some ties with Sloane, Pepys, and Evelyn that are noted by Ms. Willes; for example, Sloane, a medical doctor, performed Pepys' autopsy!)

This book provided additional background to the setting and life of Pepys. The account of John Evelyn provides deeper appreciation of this troubled period in English history.

I am a retired English teacher, Pepys has always been my favorite character in English literature. So the book was very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it

"The Curious World of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn" is a biography of both Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn. The author quoted from their diaries and personal correspondence, but she generally summarized what was said (probably because that's easier to read and understand).She divided their lives into several themes: public careers and wider context of what was going on, descriptions of their family and major friends, their involvement in the Royal Society and interest in science, Pepys' interest in the theatre and music, Evelyn's interest in gardens and gardening and his books on horticulture, and their libraries (books, ballads, prints, etc.). The author also threw in some information about tea, coffee, and chocolate along with other imported consumer goods (including flowers and other plants).These men lived through the Restoration of Charles II, the plague, and the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was interesting to see their views on what was going on and to get a sense of what life was like at that time. It's a quick look at what was happening and what some people's attitudes and interests were like. Overall, I'd recommend this book to those interested in this time period in England.I received a free ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

This book is written for people at the far left end of the spectrum who are disenfranchised with primarily Republicans, and secondarily Democrats who cannot win elections.It is shocking how many times the authors point to the 2016 elections as the need for driving power back to the cities (read: we lost the election, so let's move power to the Blue bastions). The authors state in chapter one that they will provide "clear relevance for rural areas." What they demonstrate is East Coast, big-city myopic sour-grapes disapprobation.I appreciate the author's stated desire for pragmatism, but what is pragmatic in a city of millions is often unwise in a city of 10,000. For us in small cities and towns, we've not experienced a catastrophic loss in (misplaced) hope in our federal leaders, resulting in a sudden desire to move power to a local level. We've always focused locally, regardless of whether a D or R occupied the Oval Office. I was hoping this book would help me to lead better within my small city, but I will probably use it as overpriced fire starter.In summary, If you live in NYC, Philly, Baltimore, etc., you might enjoy this read. For most Americans, this book does very little to help us grow local economies, develop better social services, or navigate & improve local governmental structures.-Disappointed Small City Moderate

The new localism ideas and policies, set in a regional context, could benefit this fascinating region, with lots of "hidden assets". The authors rightfully emphasize the critical issue of metropolitan governance – where government fragmentation works against handling the land use issue regionally. The regional plan could apply some of Jeremy's concepts about metropolitan finance, and inject some real problem-solving and a real action plan in it, not just principles, ideas, and blueprints.The book’s arguments are well buttressed by carefully selected case studies, which illustrate the power of leadership, public-private partnerships, and decisive intentionality and action. I particularly appreciated the Copenhagen smart public-private partnership case study from a country worth getting inspired from. Copenhagen PPP model could inspire a long-term solution to Washington Metrorail funding, along with Japan’s rail/metro example of a PPP transit authority that not only does not rely on any government subsidies, it turns a profit as well.Chapter TEN – Toward a Nation of Problem-Solvers, of The New Localism is one of my favorites, with its arguments for leaders and leadership, problem-solving and call to action. too small for the entire country. Purchase a National Geographic front and back map instead

It shows the beaten track...can hardly even make out any other roads. Only mileage it gives is for 5 cities on each Island, 5 of which it doesn't even have a barely readable road to. All the tour bus stuff I'm sure. But for a real explore...forget it.

Had a great trip to New Zealand. You must go. This guide was very helpful.

About the Author

A native New Zealander, Frank A. Worsley served as a reserve officer in the Royal Navy before becoming captain of the Endurance. He commanded two ships in World War I, for which he was decorated, sailed with Shackleton again in 1921, and in 1925 was the joint leader of the British Arctic Exploration. Worsley died in 1943.

Reading this book, I found I was looking for ice floes while driving down the street to the grocery. At the grocery, I considered food that could be preserved for a year. I was even looking strangely at my dog, and I love my dog.Endurance was one of the best books I've ever read.

Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened from? A nightmare so bad that you felt deep consternation even after waking up from it. Quite glad did you become when realization came to you that it was just a dream - now you were in your warm bed, and you are safe. This book is the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 27 men. The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). Very interesting is it to know the crew survived between the wreckage of their ship, Endurance, and their rescue only though tough endurance, so shows their story from this book. The author of this book, Alfred Lansing, was a journalist all his life. He has done a great job at compiling official sail records, each crew's journal, background world’s history, personal interviews, ship's manufacture features, and all the information relevant to Endurance and expedition. Through this book will you gain many new perspectives in respect to this expedition, if you already knew their story. If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.

What a page turner. Lansing is a master for the description of those explorers hardships, desire to follow Shacketon' orders. I kept saying to myself that there are few humans today that are as tough as those men. I recommend this book to add to the collection of those books that give us the knowledge of what it takes to conquer a goal.

The greatest adventure story of all time. Simply amazing. Purchase the hardcover 100th anniversary edition, that was just published.The actual photographs of the Endurance stuck in the ice are worth the price of the new edition. I have read this book several times overthe years and it never fails to excite.

I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island.That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. I’ve read a number of stories of survival and would rate this as the best of all I have read. This is one of the great adventure stories of our time. Don’t miss it.
