I really like this book. It's easier to read and understand than the serger books that came with my machines. It has a lot of pictures to help with understanding what the author is trying to get across. I go to this book when I have ANY problem going on with my stitches and it tells me why and how to correct them. To me, this is a must have book to add to your sewing library. She covers everything you need to know from cleaning your serger, to threads, to tension, needles, feet, how to work with knit fabric, flatlocking, and serging curves to name just a few topics. You will not be disappointed with this book!

I had always wanted a serger but I didn't know why because I never really knew what it did. This book really explains it in easy to understand language. It's full of tips and techniques for a variety of fabrics, applications and machines.I got this at the same time as my first serger. It makes an excellent supplement to the manual. A serger can go from a multitasking, valuable sewing must-have to a maddening wad of tangled thread torture device in a matter of seconds. This book is the only thing that came between my serger and a baseball bat on several occasions.If you're new to serging, get this and start reading it before you even open the serger box. Even if you're an experienced serger ("serger-er?" "Serger operator?"), I bet you'll find alot of helpful info in it that you'll wonder how you ever did without.

I've owned and used sergers for many years. This serger hand book is perfect for the novice and the experienced sew-ist. Easy explanations, many photos, all kinds of useful information. I'm the type of person that take the machine out of the box and just starts to use it. When I have a problem...then I look in the manual. This book answers questions and has beautiful colors photos the manuals to my sergers just don't come with.

Just got my first Serger. This book has great detailed photos of the different stitches and of the machine. From threading to which stitch to use to setup and trouble shooting...this book has it all. I especially liked the topic discussion of various types of threads available and the detailed info on how to set up the machine for the different stitches. Some of the stitches covered are the 2/3/4 thread Overlock stitches; 2 thread chainstitch; Cover stitch; Rolled hem; 4/5 thread Safety stitch...and more! Must have book!

I read about this book in several reviews of several serger models. I looked at it one day and it was a reasonable price. Apparently HSN also sold and plugged this book and it soon sold out. With the shortage the prices soared in one week. There were used in good condition copies listed for above $300.00. No thanks!! The only book I would pay that for would be a really cool Bible. A little patience and ordering it elsewhere twice only to be told it wasn't really in stock, I finally found it here and actually recieved it. It has very easy to follow hints and directions. The writer has a sense of humor making it more than just a mundane handbook. I am not new to sergers but have still found it helpful and worth the price I paid and the hassle to get it. I think someone new to sergers would exponentially benefit from this book. Chris James has a way of making the daunting task of mastering a serger sound a whole lot easier than I found it fifteen years ago. I really wish I had found this book back then. I might not have given up on my $1,000.00 monster. I feel strongly enough about the usefulness of this handbook to say, if the short stock is a indication that it is about to be updated, I would purchase the most current copy. This is from 1998 and could actually use a makeover.Happy Serging!!

Nice book for the price. Concise but thorough with good pictures.I only use 3 threads and 1 needle, and this book mainly discusses 4 threads and sometimes 2 needles. Maybe when I have more serger experience I will work up the nerve to try 4 threads / 2 needles.

I can't say enough about this book. I ordered a serger on line and I had a particular purpose in mind. You have to know that I failed sewing in school, have owned five sewing machines since then and never learned to use any of them properly. Before it was delivered I ordered this book from Amazon with one day shipping and so I had it for two days before the serger arrived. During those two days I read it from cover to cover and then over again. I was still terrified but felt that I had learned a lot. My machine came pre-threaded and so I sat right down to practice. Voila a great first try, but now for my projects' rolled hem. I read my machines instructions and was able do it on my practice fabric. Now I needed to change thread colors. The tie on method didn't work for me so I decided to thread from scratch. I read my manual and watched the video, followed all of the instructions and thought I had done it right, but the thread broke and so did the needle. Then I remembered the book had mentioned broken thread and needles and so I went right to the chapter. There was the answer. "The lower looper thread must overlap the upper looper thread otherwise the thread will break every time". Why didn't the manual or the video mention this? If I never learn another thing, that little gem of advice was worth the price, but the book is full of all the information I need. It has a place of honor on a shelf above my sewing table and will be there for years to come. If you are a newbee like me, buy this book. You won't regret it.

This book is one of the few works dealing with Japan's intelligence system and the military police (Kenpeitai) during World War II. It is an essential work for anyone working in this area. However, the book itself is let down by the flimsy nature of the analysis and the gratuitous comparison between the Kenpeitai and the Gestapo. This is not to say that the Kenpeitai were not brutal and that they did not commit vile crimes on humanity. What is true though is they were not anything like the Gestapo as their dealings with the Japanese population remained highly constrained by law and very few Japanese suffered at their hands for holding anti-government opinions or views.

The author actually tenderly tells a tale of overt acts of racism, bayoneting, torture, murder and vivisection on populations other than the Japanese, by the beyond SS of the country of the Rising Sun, there was a disregard by the allies for prisoners of the Japanese during the war up past September, 45. MacArthur was partially responsible and the British cared not for their people. A wonderful read.

Very interesting reading. Never heard of them until a TV documentary. Very nasty people. Worst than the Gestapo. Why was this kept a secret all these years.

I thought this was very readable. It did not get bogged down in trying to overly explain the minutiae of the Kempetai table of organization. There was just enough of that background info to understand the scope and reach of the organization. The book concentrated on what the military secret police did and why and how they did it. Exactly what I wanted. Calling them Japan's Gestapo was not an exaggeration. If anything it is an understatement.

Prompt delivery and covers a subject often overlooked and nearly forgotten piece of history.

Much of what is written here may be known but this book is a very good compilation of the vicious actions by the Japanese secret police in WWII. Hard to read and hard to out down. Opens the eyes.

What is there to say about one of my favorite young adult writers?Um.. she's amazing.Check.She writes killer books that always touch your heart.Check.She is the winner of the 2018 Newberry for her book, Hello Universe.Check. Oh, and she is, of course, the author of our featured books today titled You Go First. Check. You Go First is a parallel story that features the friendship of twelve-year-old Charlotte Lockard, and eleven-year-old Ben Boxer. Ben and Charlotte live thousands of miles apart, and they have never met in person. But their friendship is one that is true.They understand each other, they support one other through both their major life changes and trials, not to mention they both share their love of online Scrabble. After all, it was online Scrabble that brought them together in the first place. As you read this book, you will see that the book follows the separate lives of Charlotte and Ben all the while it intertwining them together through their shared phone calls. Charlotte is dealing with a health crisis of her father and the sudden coldness from her childhood best friend.Charlotte is struggling with finding someone that can both support her through her family crisis all the while accepting her for who she is. Like Charlotte, Ben's family is going through their own challenges. Ben's parents have sucker-punched him with a sudden announcement that they will be getting a divorce. Ben never saw it coming. Now, he is left to deal with his shock and anger of the breaking apart of his family.In order to distract from the drama at home, Ben decides to run for a Class Office. However, things only get more complicated for Ben when the school bullies decide to make Ben the center of their cruel entertainment. As both Ben and Charlotte struggle to overcome their individual challenges, their friendship and the shared love of learning often provides a relief for each of them.Throughout the story, there are moments of such "life-truths" that shines through the pages and will apply to anyone that is reading the book.

The only thing I didn't like about this book (spoiler) is that the main characters, shy sensitive people are brutally humiliated and simply shrug it off. This is not realistic.

My 11-year-old has loved Erin Entrada Kelly since reading her first book and she loves You Go First as well. She even tells her friends at school about the books! I would HIGHLY recommend.

There was nothing I didn't like. This was a fast and easy read for me and one that I will recommend to my students. It is a wonderful story of two potential "misfits" and how they connect over on-line Scrabble. The issues they encounter are all too common in real life school situations. Great story; great characters.

Spectacular as usual from this author...friendship and life and learning who we are...I want everyone I know to read it.

My son has been into Pokemon for a while. I decided to educate myself. This book provides excellent information, even for a complete noob, and thoroughly explains the nuances of the cards... Which is what gives the cards their value.

I have not received this product as of Nov. 12th. Please advise, and update!

Never received but I have been charged for it. I have little hope of ever receiving it now but in case I do I will revise my post.

I expected a nice, clear visual of the cards. Some cards are complete card image, some are partial. Some are clear, some are blurry.

ANNIE ON MY MIND was first published in 1982, the year I graduated from high school. At the time, it was one of the only LGBT books in print and was widely banned in libraries and schools.In 2017, Nancy Garden's book is dated in both writing style and societal views. Although I had a gay uncle, I never knew anyone my age who was out until I graduated from undergrad and moved to a larger city. ANNIE ON MY MIND was a HUGE deal and one of my favorite books. I was thrilled to see it become available for Kindle.Younger readers should view ANNIE ON MY MIND as accurate historical fiction, because so much has changed in thirty-five years. Rereading the story gave me a real sense of nostalgia, pre-electronic immersion, but also when fear and hate were the norm.

In an age where less than 1% of young adult books have gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual characters, it is important to promote the ones that are out there.In a time when it was considered extremely taboo, teenaged Liza finds herself falling in love with another girl, her vivacious new friend Annie. Told from Liza’s point of view, Annie On My Mind illustrates the development of their relationship, the confusion that Liza feels over her newly discovered sexuality, and the turmoil that comes as a result of being caught in the act of making love at a teacher’s house. Though this book was written over 20 years ago, I think that young adults would still find it relatable, and the material didn’t feel overly dated when I was reading it. Above all, the emotions ring true and give the book real authenticity.It is an unfortunate truth that the vast majority of books with romantic plots deal with a guy and a girl, and it’s really a shame that aren’t more that embrace other kinds of people too. Homosexuality is a very touchy and controversial subject for a lot of people, for whatever reason, and young people may not always feel comfortable asking others about different sexualities and lifestyles. That is one of the many reasons that it is important to have books that show other kinds of people and other ways to love. We’re not all cookie cutter people, so why should the characters in books be? Annie On My Mind tells a very lovely and realistic story with good characters and a satisfying ending.Maybe the story of Liza and Annie will help others who may find themselves confused or struggling and assure them that they, too, are normal and loved and things can work out positively no matter what your sexual orientation might be. Or, you know, maybe the story will just be an entertaining read for anyone. As a reader, I appreciate a well-told story with good characters, period. In Annie On My Mind, the two girls are fully realized characters who never fall into stereotypes. Their love is so charming and sweet that it was a delight to read.Highly recommended.

This is a bittersweet story of young love, but more than that it is a story of self acceptance in the face of a world that is sometimes hostile. The portions of the story about Liza and Annie's developing relationship are beautifully told and the retrospective style of the writing prepares the reader well for the less pleasant aspects of the story. It is also rather nostalgic, as someone who grew up back then, in the days before cellphones and the internet, when you had to talk to your crush from a phone tethered to the kitchen wall and deal with whichever of your family members who happened to pop by during the conversion... Not to mention calling them from a payphone at your college dorm... Been there... Done that... It's rough! Lol!Highly recommended!

When I first started to read this I was very confused about why it started the way it did, but as I read on it was more on about Liza’s view of the past before coming to the present once she realized she was free. The emotions were really emotional the love and the fear Annie and Liza had and then the judgement that she was getting. But over all after hearing the story about Nancy( the author) and what she went through made it all come together. And the very end of the book made complete sense and the love that Annie and Liza have make extremely happy

Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden is an extraordinary story. I read it in one sitting. The story is very honest and real. Considering the time period this story was written, readers will find it refreshing to discover a happy ending in the mist of love, pain, decisions, and self-discovery and acceptance. A coming of age story that everyone should read whether you are gay, straight, bi, or whatever. The fact that this book has been banned from many school libraries, the more reason to read it.

This was a book that opened my eyes to the issues facing those who fall in love with those society deem not appropriate. The book shows that love is just that, love, but in cases like this, the people have a harder time and more obstacles due to societies view points and ideas.

Annie on My Mind by Nancy Garden has always been one of my favorite books. I'm not sure whether that has to do with the fact that it's the first LGBTQ book I ever read (and actually liked) or if it's because of Garden's captivating details & dynamics. Either way, this novel will make you feel all warm inside. Liza & Annie's story is real, intriguing, & beautiful. It will remind you of your first love, and it will bring back so many memories that you haven't thought of in a long time (especially if you're like me and are only 17).The only issue that I ever had with this book is that there was never a sequel written about Liza & Annie, and I've always wondered what happened with those two. Though I guess the ending does reveal a little, but my mind is a curious one & will never be satisfied.So no, you will not be dissapointed if you read this novel. Rather, the opposite.
