Following the path set by James Clifford, who long ago proposed a much-needed bridge between anthropological, literary and historical approaches to the topic of travel culture, Kaplan analyzes the various metaphoric uses of travel in feminist and poststructuralist criticisms. Displacement, diaspora, borders, exile, migration, nomadism, homelessness, tourism and so on: Kaplan aims to investigate the role played by these symbols and metaphors in contemporary literary and cultural theory in Europe and the United States, linking them to the history of production of colonial discourses. Her main argument is that these metaphors of travel contribute to the blurring of fundamental differences and disputes between national identities, classes, races and genders. In each chapter, a particular binary formation (e.g., exile/tourism) or charged metaphor (e.g., nomad) is examined in order to highlight the possibilities and limitations of these terms as they appear in Euro-American theory. "Without rejecting or dismissing the powerful testimony of personal and individual experiences of displacement", she asks, "how is it possible to avoid ahistorical universalization and the mystification of social relations that Euro-American discourses of displacements often deploy?" (p. 2-3). In other words, it is necessary to investigate which material forces allow a social and collective phenomenon such as the modern experience of mass-movement, voluntary or forced, to be so often represented as an individualized experience. But Kaplan, as she herself acknowledges, is more concerned with the movement of ideas and practices rather than with movements of bodies through specific places. The lack of empirical references, I suspect, many times leads her to be imprisoned by the same rhetorical conventions she proposes to criticize.

I frankly nothing learned from this feminist postmodernist approach of displacements and travels. If you want my opinion as a social anthropologist all this postmodern buhaha combining feminist studies, postcolonialism and post structuralism ( baptised as cultural studies) mark the decline or the impossibility of our western culture to approach the Otherness or the Difference. Culturalists such as Carmen Kaplan who seldom move from their safe arm-chair are harming ethnological studies much more than Frazer did a century ago from his Victorian arm-chair in Oxford. If Frazer had as an excuse his classisist background I should like to ask Ms Kaplan what her background could be. Something of all and nothing at all. I bet that she does not even conceive the etymology of her name. Academia and the layman are not greatly beneficiated by this sort of pseudo social science books. I admit loosing four hours of my life trying to collect a valuable information from this book but I did not succeed. In conclusion : PURE TRUSH. Why on earth uneducated western people who never dared to visit remoted populations practicing original popular culture, write this sort of books addressed to a western public if they cannot communicate even for un hour with original patterns of culture. The symptom of this alienation is not hazardous : The most one is baptised in our western culture the less one can see "beyond the lines" of the different cultures. Tomorrow I will burn this trash in my fireplace !

This book has little in it that I cannot find in free texts. The exposition in the book is not the easiest to follow.The author seems preoccupied with determinants, but makes an egregious error in chapter 1 problem 2, where he asserts that if (AB) is square, then det(AB) = det(BA), then asks the reader to verify a similar phenomenon for trace(AB) = trace(BA). In fact the trace equality is always the case if AB exists as square. The determinant equality needs qualifications and exists iff A and B are both square, or if both AB and BA are not invertible in the case of A being m x n and B being n x m, where m != n. Otherwise det(AB) != det(BA).Further, for a book to be about "Matrix Theory", talk about numeric stability, etc. and to not even mention the Singular Value Decomposition... is really unacceptable to me.Finally, there are no solutions to the exercises.There are much better free books out there. For instance consider reading "Linear Algebra, Theory And Applications" made freely available by the author, Kenneth Kuttler.In game theoretic terms, this book is dominated by free texts. It is quite an old text, so perhaps it was useful in a pre-internet era. I would not recommend buying this nowadays.

When I read this book, I did it to remember some concepts that I had forgotten. So, I got this book more for reference than to learn something new. I was impressed with the succinct presentation. An excellent cost / benefit ratio.

The best reference / refresher text I've found. It is written in the "old style" with concise text, proofs, and derivations. Highly recommended to grad students / researchers whose primary field is not necessarily mathematics, or those who teach undergraduate / graduate level math courses involving matrix analysis.

Franklin's Matrix Theory gives in-depth explanations of the all techniques used for linear algebra (e.g., determinants, eigenvectors). The book offers detailed proofs that an elementary linear algebra textbook would not provide. Unfortunately, the book is written in a highly abstract fashion with few numerical examples. Furthermore, the book offers a limited number of problems, with no answer keys, thus precluding its use in a classroom setting. Matrix Theory is horrible as a textbook, but could be useful as a reference guide for someone looking for specific linear algebra proofs.

Full of vitriol and anger. A pity that KP didn't wait a little longer before producing this, coming as it did mere months after he was "sacked" from the England team following the disastrous 2013-14 Ashes tour. He does leave one feeling like he was a victim and scapegoat of the establishment (also having the England captaincy given and taken away again, and mismanagement of his knee injury by the ECB's medical team and insurers) and there are engaging passages about the 2005 Ashes and other key achievements, but overall the book has so much bitterness and hurt along with attacks on individuals and former teammates that one wonders if it wouldn't have been better to wait 2 or 3 years to gain some perspective on these issues.

An entertaining read not short of drama. There are many good things to say about the book. His thoughts on his own style of batting, his identity crisis ( British/South African/mercenary) . Some of his opinions on topics like dressing room atmosphere, IPL, coaching etc are quite insightful. However it is quite clear that this comes from an elite player with an axe to grind and confirms KP's flawed genius. He truly goes after his detractors highlighting that he isn't to blame for all his misfortunes. There are several instances of repeated name-calling , playing the victim and inconsistent narratives that at worst cast doubt on his credibility and at best highlights his immaturity. He could have indeed devoted equal space to the positive facets of his life, his batting, his key innings ( as opposed to focussing on one or two signature shots in those innings) - stuff that people could learn from. He has overdone the "Andre-agassi open" style of candid bios. At the end of the day it is what it is- an honest, personal, biased account of what exactly went wrong and who is to blame.

I'm a huge KP fan. I like him both, as a cricketer as well as a person. Given that we all have shades of grey, it would be inappropriate to expect him to be saintly & attitude-free. It's his mercurial nature that makes him what he is. Unfortunately, despite having some mildly-shocking revelations, the book fails to impress, though it does make one glued to it. First of all, this should never have been called an Autobiography. It isn't one. It neither covers his full journey, nor it goes into details about occurrences apart from the sunset battles. While I personally enjoyed following all English cricketers on Twitter and enjoyed the banter, KP certainly wasn't enjoying it. Sad, he thought it that ugly and he certainly knew the intents better than I did. I am currently reading Ricky Ponting's autobiography and I find it so much more inspiring & enjoyable. KP, man... you deserved a better autobiography than this bitter tale. Thank you for entertaining us over the years.

Kevin makes no pretence at being a writer. He is a cricketer with a story to tell,and an interesting story it is. As he himself, says, perhaps there could have been more about cricket in the book, but that is not why one would want to buy the book. It tells Kevin's side of the numerous scrapes and arguments that he got into with cricketing administrators and teammates. He pulls no punches and tells it the way he saw these events in a clear, straightforward manner. His writing gives a wonderful insight into the characters of many of the world's top international cricketers and in particular, a deep insight into Kevin himself. There is a little bit of repetition here and there, but I found the book so interesting that I read through it all in one night. A great insight into the life of KP. I really hope he gets back into the england team after reading how awfully he got treated by the ECB and Flower. Fascinating to hear about the issues inside the changing room and behind the scenes which as a general member of the public we don't often hear about. i also didnt know the extent of kp injuries during his career. Of course it is all written from his perspective so can seem biased but my opinion on him has been changed hugely. He is a genuine cricketer who just wants to play at the highest level for his country. All those people calling him a mercenary for making money in the ipl need to wake up and smell the salt. Other nations have embraced the ipl and big bash like nz, aus, india and SA and its no wonder they performed so well in the world cup. We are still stuck in our old traditional ways and we have a lot of catching up to do. First things first put kp back in at 4 and get our batting line up looking exciting again. This is a must read for any cricket lovers.

This is a great read for anyone that wants a real insiders view of a professional sports team. And it seems that the type of animosity that existed in the English dressing room isn't that uncommon, but it isn't necessarily a recipe for poor performance. KP would have you believe that England were successful in spite of terrible coaching and management, and maybe that's true, but there are other examples (Chicago Bulls) where seemingly conflicting players, coaches and management can achieve fantastic results. This is not an Andy Flower fan story. KP gives it to Flower again, and again, and again. Matt Prior (Big Cheese) comes in 2nd for the vitriolic attacks. I think I had a poor view of KP through the eyes of the media. KP's own words paint a far different picture. I suspect the truth is somewhere in between. Credit to KP for writing a book that was a thoroughly good read. Certainly at the top of the pile for interesting and entertaining sporting autobiographies!

I am not sure that this book adds value to anything except KP's bank balance. Cricket does not benefit, and nobody will want to read it ten years from now. Such a talented sportsman, and yet it feels like it a story of a spoiled little boy trying to justify what happened. You don't need to, the statistics tell the story. KP lets have a book about cricket from a great player.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book just like I've enjoyed all the books in this series. I hope the Sisterhood Series continues as I will miss the women in these books. I love reading how these women of varying ages (2 are senior citizens) can do the impossible and enjoy doing so. They are tough but vulnerable and very funny. They are also heroines as everything they do is to help those that have been done an injustice. I also love the comradery among these women and with their men, who also work with them on their cases. I recommend starting with the first book in the series. You will be hooked!

Crash and Burn: The Sisterhood novels: Book 27 is by Fern Michaels. This is a fantastic book which should be unusual when it is the 27 th book in a series. However, Fern Michaels has a way of making each book unique so that it stands on its own as well as works its way into the series. In this book, the men and women work together to make amends for things that occurred in the past.Nikki Quinn is finishing up on a rather unique divorce case. Something about it bothers her. Neither of the couple seem to really want the divorce. Amy, who has been hired to work for Nikki’s firm, and Jeffrey, son of Senator Buck Lambert, seemed to be really in love. Amy is walking away with nothing at her request while Jeffrey is insisting on a trust being set up for her. Amy agreed but didn’t intend to ever touch the trust. As Jeffrey was leaving last, Buck Lambert burst into Nikki’s office to try to push his weight around to make sure Amy got nothing from Jeffrey. Nikki lambasted him for bullying his way into her business and made it perfectly clear that he would get no information about the divorce from her. As he blasted his way out of the office building, a little lady who was coming in was hurled in with the revolving door. She had an appointment with Nikki. In reality, she was the fashionable wife of Buck Lambert, Lavinia, who had come to Nikki to set up a divorce for herself. She did have some definite instructions which would enable her to be long gone when Buck received the papers. Something about her entire day bothered her. She just couldn’t figure out what it was. She does know that this divorce will pit her against the Chessmen, a law firm notorious for its major wins for its divorce cases.Where does the Sisterhood come into play with this divorce?

As usual the group of women known as the vigilantes, has found evil men and righted the wrongs they had caused. They now have a support group who WOR with them as needed, or go on there own mission to improve the lives of others.It is well written as usual. The evolving of family is incorporated. Careers continue to grow. All of which makes the characters real to the readers.

Okay what happend to Grady? Murphy has been mentioned but not much. Also when did Maggie stop being a vegetarian. Also there was a mention of Jack and Niki adopting a baby then poof never again. All of this being said I love the sisterhood series and am looking forward to reading Need to Know (Decemeber :( ). Will make myself content reading the newest Men of the Sisterhood.

I have read every book in this series. Had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. The suspense was building so it was hard to put the book down. Love the sisterhood when they get things done and take charge. Watch out bad guys. The girls are coming for you.

In my opinion, this book was a let down. It didn't keep me entertained enough while I was reading it to keep my mind on the book and not on everything else going on in my life. I'm beginning to feel that this series needs to end.

The beginning of the book left you wondering who needed help. As you continued reading the story kept changing who did really need help and why. When you discovered all the connections you were surprised. In the end it came all together. Enjoyed the book.

This is the first Sisterhood book by Fern Michaels I've read. I now realize these books should be read in order as I do not understand the background. Even so, I am so disappointed. It is so boring in that it is filled with such l -o- n -g paragraph one-sided conversations. No one I know talks like that without taking a breath or letting someone else comment. They just babble on and on from one thing to another. I also thought it was poorly written in that it seemed almost amaturisticly written for a school-age person. I am 3/4 of the way through it and find I am skimming the rest of the book to get it finished. I am an avid reader and I can say that in the past 3 years or so there was only 1 other book I could not and did not finish reading. This is close to that. I do want to find out the ending, although I'm not expecting much in the way of surprise.

About the Author

BETSY MASON is an award-winning science journalist based in the San Francisco Bay Area and co-author (with Greg Miller) of the National Geographic blog "All Over the Map." She was a 2015-2016 MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellow. Previously she was the online science editor for Wired and the science reporter for the Contra Costa Times. Before becoming a journalist, Mason earned a master's degree in geology at Stanford University.GREG MILLER is a science and tech journalist based in Portland, Oregon. Previously he was a senior writer at Wired and a staff writer at Science, where he won several honors. Miller earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience at Stanford University. He has appeared on public radio's Science Friday to discuss maps and has given talks on a wide variety of cartography-related topics.

All Over the Map by Betsy Mason and Greg Miller showed up today and it is an absolutely beautiful book. As you'd expect in a book about maps, the maps are visually stunning, interesting, and represent a wide variety of topics and styles. The printing is well done and everything is very high quality.What I love most about this book is that each map is accompanied by an interesting story. Sometimes the story has to do with the subject depicted in the map, sometimes it is about how the map was produced, and sometimes it has to do with the interesting history of a rare and important map itself. What this results in is an interesting collection of topics that changes unexpectedly with each turn of the page. As I scanned through the book the first time I was captivated by stories like "A Mesoamerican Survivor" (describing the close-calls that nearly destroyed a rare Aztec map) right next to wonderful images from a thoroughly modern view of Earth's weather in "World of Wind".The organization of the book - which avoids a 'history of maps' format contributes even further to the interesting juxtaposition of maps and narratives.I couldn't be more impressed with this book. I'll be giving this as a gift this holiday season and will certainly keep a copy on my shelf!

This is an amazing book! Both my husband and 14 year old son are “mappy” and they have spent hours both together and individually talking about and reading this book. Their favorite stories/maps are the SF Shipwreck, Soviet Union communist map and the Death Star. The book is well organized and the layout, graphics and photos compliment the engrossing text perfectly. Highly recommend!!

This is an amazing book! The maps are beautiful, stunning, interesting, engaging and informative. National Geographic definitely has a winner with All Over the Map. My 15 year old son immediately found the map of the Death Star and was hooked after that. We have all picked it up and read about a topic that then led to a discussion about something scientific or historical. Great book to have out and available for both kids and adults alike. Definitely recommended!!

A fascinating assembly and discussion of so many different types of maps and the stories behind them. I have a whole new appreciation of the history of cartography. You might also consider buying a magnifying glass as there is so much detail you are going to want that analog zoom!

Very neat book. I got this for Christmas for my map-loving boyfriend (geography major, has had only mapping-related jobs) and he started reading it immediately. It has a great variety of maps, including fictional maps (Game of Thrones! Death Star plans!), but from what he said, it also includes some of the well-known "classic" maps. Good graphics, and enough of a story with each map that it feels more substantial than your typical coffee-table book full of pretty pictures.

Really like these. Bought a few to see how they looked and am buying more. Whoever boxed these needs retraining. I bought 8 and they were shipped in 2 different huge boxes with some other small items. Waste of resources.

About the Author

Caroline Seebohm was born and brought up in England and graduated from Oxford University. She began her writing career covering interior design for House & Garden in New York. Her books include At Home with Books, At Home with Art, and English Country, as well as Boca Rococo: How Addison Mizner Invented Florida’s Gold Coast, and several other distinguished biographies. Caroline Seebohm lives on the banks of the Delaware River in New Jersey.Peter Woloszynski left Poland for England when he was three. After being educated in Surrey, he became an assistant at the Rossetti Studios in London, working with photographers Peter Williams, Barry Lalegan, and Teresa Traegar. Peter continued with studio work until 1984, when he started working for The World of Interiors and House & Garden in London, as well as Vogue while living in Australia. His first books specialized in photographing America, especially around South Carolina. The photography and research for this latest book took two and a half years, his time being split between New Orleans and Bath, England, where his two children live.

Part of me loves this.. the other part thinks the houses are kind of junky and boring. And odd. But some of the houses that are shown I just love, and transports me back to a time when these houses were the norm, and decorating respresented the person and not just the trends... such an odd eclectic mix... kind of like me I suppose. :)

It came in good shape

We are always on the lookout for old victorian houses. We really enjoyed the photos and descriptions and would love to be able to tour some of these homes! Imagine the history involved and the stories the walls could tell!

Wonderful book with good info and pictures. This one was missing several pages in a few places which was very unfortunate though.

Didn't read it through yet but what I have read is very interesting. It's a nice coffee table book .

Gave as gift to friend who had ancestors there. He liked it alot.

I own a 120 year old farmhouse in the South and I am fascinated w/ the history and culture. This book is a JOY! I LOVE reading about the families in the book, the photos are GORGOUS and I have been unable to put this book down! Of all the 'Home' books I've read this is by far my absolute favorite! ENJOY!!!
