From the Inside Flap

?Southerners seem to stay close to each other, accumulating ties of kinship in a way that ultimately becomes almost impossible to unravel, and thus the family house remains the center of births, marriages, and deaths through the generations.??From Under Live OaksThere is a part of the South that clings to its past, whether that past is an imagined or a real one. Resonant with antebellum elegance and sometimes turbulent history, the houses of Under Live Oaks act as a touchstone for another time, becoming repositories of rich family traditions for their owners. This tenacity to hold on to their history is beautifully demonstrated in the decor of these houses, filled with antiques and personal treasures, decorated in the style that was fashionable 150 years ago and that has not been tampered with since. More than 200 images from acclaimed photographer Peter Woloszynski fill the pages of Under Live Oaks, giving a provocative view into a world many never see?a world of faded portraits, shelves of dusty porcelain, dolls lined up in an armchair, family letters, lace fans, invitations to the cotillion, old steamer trunks. These houses were the royal palaces of the age, furnished with the finest objects and fabrics?many imported from Europe?that the first half of the nineteenth century had to offer. Under Live Oaks offers a remarkably consistent vision of a period, a period that takes its place in the dark history of America and that casts a permanent shadow over its legacy. The houses range from an Italianate villa in Columbus, Georgia, to a masterful Greek Revival mansion in Fairvue, Tennessee; from the charming Catalpa in St. Francisville, Louisiana, to the melancholy Winter Place in Montgomery, Alabama. The classic plantation houses of Natchez, Mississippi, compete in beauty with an elegant townhouse in Walterboro, South Carolina, and the historic Sherwood Forest in Charles City, Virginia. All the states of the Deep South are represented. A few of the houses are open to the public; others are unknown and unvisited except by family and friends. Yet all of them stand as witnesses to a bygone era. Noted author Caroline Seebohm eloquently casts the stories of the land, the houses, and their owners. She vividly evokes the power of the architecture and interior design of these houses, and through her we hear the owners? pride of place and staunch allegiance to their family history. Under Live Oaks is an intimate tour of the Old South, an experience available to only a few and that in the not-too-distant future will be lost forever.

Part of me loves this.. the other part thinks the houses are kind of junky and boring. And odd. But some of the houses that are shown I just love, and transports me back to a time when these houses were the norm, and decorating respresented the person and not just the trends... such an odd eclectic mix... kind of like me I suppose. :)

It came in good shape

We are always on the lookout for old victorian houses. We really enjoyed the photos and descriptions and would love to be able to tour some of these homes! Imagine the history involved and the stories the walls could tell!

Wonderful book with good info and pictures. This one was missing several pages in a few places which was very unfortunate though.

Didn't read it through yet but what I have read is very interesting. It's a nice coffee table book .

Gave as gift to friend who had ancestors there. He liked it alot.

I own a 120 year old farmhouse in the South and I am fascinated w/ the history and culture. This book is a JOY! I LOVE reading about the families in the book, the photos are GORGOUS and I have been unable to put this book down! Of all the 'Home' books I've read this is by far my absolute favorite! ENJOY!!!

LOVED!

No Better Hope:What The Lincol (Great American Memorials)

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-This slim volume is filled with facts. Brent Ashabranner opens with comments on the millennium celebration at the site and his emotional reaction to the memorial. He then presents a brief biographical sketch of President Lincoln that concentrates on the leader's actions and speeches concerning slavery and the Union, and a discussion of how and when the Lincoln Memorial bill was signed into law. Separate chapters are dedicated to Henry Bacon, the memorial's architect; Daniel Chester French, the sculptor; and the ideas they incorporated into the design of the work. The book concludes with information on the steps taken to preserve the site. The volume includes the text of the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation and a fact page that lists the dimensions and cost of the building and statue. Numerous color and black-and-white photographs, both recent and archival, illustrate this title. Older students may prefer Ernest Goldstein's more comprehensive The Statue Abraham Lincoln (Lerner, 1997).Margaret C. Gr. 4-8. From the Great American Memorials series, this well-designed volume introduces the Lincoln Memorial. Ashabranner's conversational author's note sets the tone in its personal reflections about what Lincoln has meant to him, his memories of his first visit to the Lincoln Memorial, and the feeling the structure inspires in him to this day. The text covers such topics as Lincoln's story and his importance to the country; the genesis of the movement to commemorate Lincoln; the building of the memorial; and the historic events that have occurred on the site, including and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Recent renovations and the efforts to preserve the memorial are also discussed. Excellent color photographs by Jennifer Ashabranner appear throughout the book, which ends with a bibliography and other sources. An example of a quality series. Making Sense of Sex: A Forthright Guide to Puberty, Sex and Relationships for People with Asperger's Syndrome, by Sarah Attwood

Review

Making Sense of Sex is a clear, explicit and informative book that would be of use to young people, parents, teachers, and psychologists; in fact for anyone whose role requires them to deal with the subject of sexuality. Although it is written for teenagers and young adults with Asperger's Syndrome, it would meet the needs of all. It is written in clear, direct and easy to understand language... Making Sense of Sex is the most useful and informative book relating to the area of sexual development that I have come across and it will certainly meet the needs of teenagers and young adults... This book is easy to read and equips the reader with a fund of information. It generates a positive value-based perspective, which instils confidence to deal with sexuality on a personal level and provides the necessary tools to those who are required to support young people who are undergoing the process of sexual development. Author: DebateThis guide, with its clear, practical writing; diagrams; and table of sexual terms in their common, scientific, slang, and euphemistic forms, would be a huge help to any teen with AS as well as to his/her loved ones and caretakers. It can be read alone, but it can also - and ideally - inspire discussion between those with AS and the adults in their life. Strongly recommended for academic and public libraries with autism collections... The author, whose husband, Tony Attwood, wrote The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome, is uniquely suited to pen this work - she grew up with a sister who has Asperger's syndrome (AS) and was a sexuality educator in Australia for 15 years. Here, she wisely discusses sexuality within a wider swath of social issues, from conversational skills and friendship to bullying, healthy lifestyle, personal hygiene, dating, sexual practices and health, birth control, and pregnancy. Attwood has a clear handle on the AS mentality: e.g., in discussing personal hygiene (often not a priority among teens with AS), she not only explains the how but she also goes into the whys of its importance. Author: Library JournalFor any parent or professional working with children on the autism spectrum, there are ideas within this book that can be adapted to answer questions or challenging situations that often occur without warning. Making Sense of Sex is presented in such a way that makes it easy for the practitioner to source coping strategies for every situation from learning about yourself and how to make healthy choices to understanding emotions and how to development friendships. Author: GAP Good Autism GuideSarah's book is an essential resource for all families who have an adolescent with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, such as Asperger's syndrome. The information is detailed and accurate, and addresses just about all the issues relating to the important subject of sexuality, which is all too often distorted and presented in a biased way. Sarah's approach is to explain the facts neutrally and realistically, while acknowledging individual values and respecting personal choice. I will certainly be recommending this book to all my clients. Author: Isabelle Hénault PhD. Author of Asperger Syndrome and Sexuality: from Adolescence through AdulthoodSarah's book brings something new to the arena of sexual educational literature. The language she uses is frank and informal and seems perectly natural. She never lingers on a point for too long therefore making it seem awkward yet she covers just about every question a pre-teen/teenager may have. Author: Asperger Newsletter East AngliaSarah Attwood has a background as a sexuality educator and has a sister with Asperger's Syndrome, so she clearly has the right credentials to write this much needed book. It was incredibly easy to read and free from any sense of awkwardness that a book on sex can have... I thoroughly recommend it and feel that children and teenagers will get different things from the book depending on their own individual level of development and personal situation. They can easily revisit the sections that are relevant to their own lives. Sarah Attwood has admirably filled a niche in the market. Author: Asteens.co.uk

I've been very grateful for this book as my son gets into the teen years. We try to have forthright conversations, but I'm sure this book covers more things than I ever would be able to, in matter-of-fact language. It talks straight-forwardly about a number of sexual topics, self-care, relationships, etc. Frankly, neurotypicals like me probably could have used a book like this! If you want to keep to euphemisms and kind of the straight and narrow, this is not the book for you, as there are frank discussions about STDs, varying forms of sexuality, various sexual acts, etc, but I think it's perfect for my high school son, who's going to be hearing things from his public high school anyway. This way, between this book and me, I know he has recourse to more factual information.

I bought this book for my daughter with Asperger's Syndrome because she had begun to ask questions about sex that I could no longer answer accurately. When she asks me something and I'm concerned that I can't provide her with correct information, I just tell her to look it up! Concepts are explained in a way that teenagers on the spectrum can understand.

This book has been very helpful for the last year I've had it. Anytime my son has a question and I want to make sure he is getting accurate information we go to this book. He understands it and feels better that he is getting facts and not just guesses or opinion. Would recommend highly.

This is a simpler book for pre-pubecent and adolescent kids. The Henault book on Aspergers and Sexuality is better for adults.

Great and descriptive book.

The book was a thorough guide to physical maturation and sexuality, but didn't find it helpful for understanding issues unique to Asperger's and strategies for dealing with those issues.

Excellent for everyone.Clear, factual, informative. Answers the questions in a straightforward, factual manner. Just what my son needed and what I wanted for him.

This is a wonderfully valuable book. Bracingly clear and comprehensive, it is one that any person with Asperger's Syndrome could turn to with confidence and pleasure. More than that, though, it's a book that anyone with any questions at all about sex would find useful. I know that when I was an adolescent with hard-to-ask questions in the 1960s, it would have been a godsend. But as a father of a young man on the autism spectrum, I find the book has a special value to me: it models a way of talking to young people about life that everybody--parents, teachers, doctors, therapists--should emulate. With uncanny intelligence and sensitivity, Sarah Attwood writes in a tone that is respectful, good-humored, reassuring, and utterly frank. This distinctly friendly way of conveying information deserves cloning on a global scale.

Growing, Older: A Chronicle of Death, Life, and Vegetables, by Joan Dye Gussow

From Booklist

Gussow has written and taught extensively on food and politics (This Organic Life, 2001), but here she turns to a more personal subject, the period following the death of her husband of 40 years. She assumed (as did others) that she would be grief-stricken, yet she found herself able to move into the next period of life with grace and anticipation. This is due in no small part to long-term differences the two experienced (although they seem minor), and to her rededication to gardening. It would be incorrect to classify this as a guide to plant care or landscape design, however, as Gussow’s view on life and living is far too broad. She writes about removing pests from the yard and then shifts gears to discuss national food policy, share recipes for zucchini, and reminisce about her son and butterflies. She rails against humanity’s interest only in itself, yet expresses pride in her ability to still heft bags of soil and rocks. Gussow is an octogenarian who will not go gently in any direction, and certainly won’t be ignored. --Colleen Mondor

Booklist-Gussow has written and taught extensively on food and politics (This Organic Life, 2001), but here she turns to a more personal subject, the period following the death of her husband of 40 years. She assumed (as did others) that she would be grief-stricken, yet she found herself able to move into the next period of life with grace and anticipation. This is due in no small part to long-term differences the two experienced (although they seem minor), and to her rededication to gardening. It would be incorrect to classify this as a guide to plant care or landscape design, however, as Gussow's view on life and living is far too broad. She writes about removing pests from the yard and then shifts gears to discuss national food policy, share recipes for zucchini, and reminisce about her son and butterflies. She rails against humanity's interest only in itself, yet expresses pride in her ability to still heft bags of soil and rocks. Gussow is an octogenarian who will not go gently in any direction, and certainly won't be ignored.Library Journal- Gussow (Mary Swartz Rose Professor Emerita & former chair, nutrition dept., Columbia Univ. Teachers Coll.; This Organic Life invites readers into her life as a widow through journal entries spanning almost ten years. What's fascinating is that she found herself not lonely but content and fulfilled through her extensive garden and the animals that visited. She shares lessons of self-reliance and self-control in potatoes' tendency to stay put, bees' role in the food chain, and her own tenacity to cherish nature. Her compilation of life experiences would primarily interest gardeners or environmentalists. Gussow (Mary Swartz Rose Professor Emerita & former chair, nutrition dept., Columbia Univ. I was surprised at the disparity in ratings....It seems either you love this book, or you hate it. I loved it, but then again, I found much to identify with in this story. It's not surprising to me that the author felt almost relief after her husband passed....in dealing with fatal illnesses of loved ones, we often mourn long before the person actually leaves us. The process of growing plants allows us to understand that there is a rhythm to life, and a season for everything. The process of aging is unavoidable, no matter how many plastic surgeries you have. Better to face it unafraid, and make the most of it. How sad that some are so afraid of the changes of age, that they miss all the beauty of this most excellent time of life. :D

I really enjoyed this book from cover to cover. Joan was open and honest about her feelings and her life and I highly admire that. I know a lot of women who are "surprised" when their husbands pass away that they aren't devastated. It's not a slam against their marriage or against the man, it's just that they have a full life of their own and life goes on. Joan does say she misses her husband, but she was just surprised that she was ok by herself. I think I will be also if and when that day comes.I enjoyed the journal like aspect of the book. I also journal. I LOVE gardening and she talks of her challenges but how despite that, it is her passion. I felt a strong connection with Joan. I am totally glad that I bought this book and I recommend it to anyone who loves gardening and living a eco-conscious life.

Joan Gussow is a model for anyone facing the "third trimester of life", as she calls her expected final 30 years. As outlined in her previous book This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader (it helps to have read it first, but is not necessary), she continues to eat fruits and vegetables that only she has grown in her home garden, despite continued assaults from the Hudson River and climate change. Her persistence is admirable, although it does occur to the reader that perhaps her homesite was not well-chosen. There is less nuts-and-bolts discussion of how she accomplishes her feat of self-sufficiency in this 9th decade of her life, and a bit more philosophical musing on the current state of the world. She continues to express frustration and dread at what western agricultural technology is doing to food and climate, is angered at the focus of American medicine on cosmetic surgery and its neglect of devastating diseases because they are less profitable, and seems frankly to be glad she probably won't be around to experience the worst of it. This is a sobering book, but the parts detailing how Gussow continues to overcome the obstacles thrown in her way by nature are uplifting; as a gardener I was inspired by her determination and joy in her successes with vegetables old and new each year. As a recent convert to mostly local foods myself, I definitely enjoy what I eat more than before, but Joan's book makes me aware that the Slow Food movement and other attempts to mitigate the effects of Big Ag may be too little, too late. After putting the book down, I felt a mixture of inspiration and sadness which after a week or so has evolved into increased determination to promote local, sustainable agriculture and fight the spread of mono-cropping and GE/GM food.

A very wise woman wrote this little book to help others age gracefully. A must-read for all aspiring little old ladies.

received incorrect book

I purchased this book because I thoroughly enjoyed her previous book, "This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban Homesteader". I knew it, like the previous book, would ramble on across various topics, but the writing in this book was just to scattered for me. I praise her determination but can not recommend this book.

Enjoyed the book

Joan is able to share her feelings in such an honest and direct manner that I was touched to the core and at the same time, learned so much about food production. Definitely worth reading.

A poet of the 20th century- of its reality. Poems of beauty and courage, and resistance to inhumanity. Worth reading.

Fine selection from one of Russia's most popular poets.

This is a small volume of Yevtushenko. I cannot comment on the translation quality, but I enjoyed it.

Good to read the poetry of this man whose words captured the fall of the Soviet Union and embodied a revolution.

My only comment... if you like this author, look up his poem "Lies". It's one of my favorites!Otherwise, nice collection.

How great it is to have this book of poems With me at all timesMore than forty years so far I have enjoyed even loved these poems

In world literature, Pushkin dominates the early 19th century while Akhmatova takes up residences in the first half of the twentieth. There are numerous other poets to consider and appreciate: Lermontov (19th century), Blok, Pasternak, Mandelstam and Tsetaeva (20th) but after them, it seems it gets a little complicated or if anything confusing. The greats have been established, lauded and loved. The closer we get to modern literature, the more chaotic it feels with so many names vying for the spotlight (and this goes for all nations with their share of writers and poets). After reading Selected Poems (translated beautifully by Robin Milner-Gulland Peter Levi), I would have to say Yevgeny Yevtushenko belongs in the pantheon of Russian greats.Yevtushenko was born in Siberia but came to prominence after Stalin's death in 1953. There is something ecstatic, majectic and carefree about his poetry and yet at the same time, it is tender and aware of the trials of the twentieth century. 'Zima Junction' simply cannot be read once. It is more a kaleidoscope of Yevtushenko's world and the world springing from his childhood. It is a journey through the past laden with nostalgia, philosophy, wonder and charisma. The aforementioned poem is necessary to loving the poet's approach. The remainder of the volume is made up of shorter poems, many of them smaller versions or off-shoots of 'Zima Junction'. Not to say the poet is repeating himself but the concerns that erupt in the epic poem echo throughout the book. History and family is important to Yevtunshenko and his family have key roles in 'Weddings' and 'On a Bicycle'.After 'Zima Junction', the second most important poem is 'Babiy Yar' which focuses on the Nazi mass-murder of Kiev Jews.I gladly give this book five stars though I do have one sensible complaint: I wish there were more poems. A poet this fascinating deserves a larger collection. This mean showcase of poems only whets my appetite. I guess I'll have to reread 'Zima Junction' a few more times before a more comprehensive volume of Yevtushenko's work is available.

I bought this for my husband and he loves it. Just as described. A little pricey for a calendar but I would definitely recommend and would purchase again, especially if you're a Marvel/ Black Panther Fan

I like the artwork, but what makes a calendar functional is I can use it to plan. In this case, the white numbers on a gray background is a little hard to read.

My son loved this calendar. The pics are poster worthy and the scale of the calendar is perfect for his wall.

Very vibrant. My son loved it!

I originally ordered the Avengers calendar but it wasn’t in stock and it was already reaching February so when I saw the Black Panther calendar I jumped on it & I was NOT disappointed !!!

I love the quality of the poster and the stunning pictures of the characters! This was a good choice.

Its okay. Quality is good, the poses of the panther they chose are a bit redundant.

Considering that I read a lot of books on nutrition, I would have to say that this is a very good book. I am much harder on myself than the author suggests for lowering one's blood pressure. I sense that if I had followed the suggestions in this book, my blood pressure may not have come down as low as it has come down (and remains down). But it is a very good book for someone just starting to manage their health. I do get some good recipes that I am using but I omit the salt and the food still tastes good. However, if one must have their salt, they would love the recipes in this book. I learned that, by not adding salt to my food, I need to get my iodine from somewhere else. To compensate, I have started eating more iodine rich foods, like pacific cod. All in all, the recipes are very good. I have done the exercises in the book, but my exercise of choice is walking 30 to 45 minutes four to five days a week. I'm glad I ordered the book.

I found this book very informative and easy to read. I could not wait to start the plan. This book describes one of the first plans that contained recipes that I actually want to continue using. It also outlines a plan that I can continue. I really wanted to get off of my blood pressure medication, and this book gave me the foundation for a solid action plan to work towards that.

I have been working my way through this book. It really DOES do what the title says. My blood pressure has dropped, and I have already lost 7 pounds in 2 weeks. The recipes are DELICIOUS, too.

Easy for me to use.The eating is part of the plan. The rest is exercise, yoga, relaxation exercises. It all works. The first week I had to go out and get a lot of spices I do not usually use and make spice combos.. I did not make them all, as it turns out.I made a few and have used them often. I am now on week 2. NOT following it 100%, more like 75%. They want you to eat 4 "meals" a day, granted that some are shakes, but I cannot be in the kitchen that often to do the four times.I feel better. I have not taken my bp because my doc does not want me to take it right now... just do the diet..... so I am. I cannot take any blood pressure med, and my bp has risen. So I have to get my body in better bp shape, and this is how I choose to do it. What is so good about it is that there is a PLAN, a flexible choice plan to follow. Someone said this was not any different than any other lower your bp diet... maybe so, but the plan and the recipes are very helpful to me.You definitely eat healthily on this diet, and most of the recipes taste good. They also make suggestions for when you go out to eat or if you have to have a quick meal a la freezer.. ex. Healthy Choice and the like foods. So the bases are covered. Back to the gym Monday. I had to curtail that not because of the diet, but will be back at it next week. Try this diet. I have it on my Kindle.

Have started using the suggestions for diet but not reduced the BP yet.May take a bit longer than 5 days.

good

Pretty basic science with several great recipes for smoothies, etc.

Very good, I am still working on it as I haven't had it very long so will have to see how it goes in another month or so, so far so good.
