* Overall, a good book with a lot to offer ... specific comments follow* Love the layout and the lively illustrations for chapter breaks* The fungi structure and sex chapter would have enhanced by a number of diagrams* Mushroom nutrition (what nutrients mushrooms offer us) would be a nice addition to the upfront piece of the book* The section on mushroom types was great!
This book has been professionally edited and formatted. The pics are by a pro who understands BOKEh. This is a term in photography where the photographer makes the subject matter in sharp focus and the background is blurred for maximum effect. The author gives authoritative and very knowledgeable info to grow mushrooms at home and the different breeds. It is a great book by itself, but I can't help feeling that he really missed the boat by not explaining how growers once established can then sell them to restaurants who want very fresh mushrooms delivered locally a couple of times a week. Then of course if they get an organic certification the grower can market them for even more profit.Highly recommended. The reviewer is the author of the Kindle book entitle: Sex Education for Adults Secrets To Amazing Sexand Happily Ever After Too
Great read to stimulate an interest in mushroom cultivation. The author provides a good overall look at the processes of growing popular as well as some unusual mushrooms both indoors and out. The book provides nice photographs of the different mushroom types and goes through the process of growing each specific type. My only disappointment is that there weren't more pictures to accommpany the process explanations. Would have loved to see what a bag of spores should look like when you order it online. Any process needs pictures at every step. Otherwise I am inspired to try it, I would be more apt to look for a kit though. I just don't feel I know enough to step out on my own.
Big compliment! This book is fantastic. It tells you everything you need to know to grow mushrooms at home. Very detailed, still fun to read.
Wild mushrooms dot my gardens especially after a rainy season, but the idea of cultivating them never made my gardening list. Until now. As I opened my e-copy of Richard Bray’s new book, Mushroom Cultivation, I became fascinated with growing mushrooms. Bray walks the reader through mushrooms from the science behind them to the steps required for a successful harvest. No longer will I view mushrooms as just a pizza topping.Richard Bray offers his readers the benefit of his own research and hard work by specifying the correct mushrooms for a particular situation. He identifies seven popular types (loved the excellent photos!) with pros and cons for each. Coupled with the thorough treatment of the mushroom types are explanations of the needed growing environments along with the preparation procedures and tools required for success. The author is a realistic grower who understands that things do go wrong, and he has included a diagnostic chapter describing potential problems along with suggested solutions. Nothing is left to chance for the grower who starts with this book. This book will appeal to curious readers who want to know more about mushrooms and to determined readers who want to grow their own. If mushrooms play a part in your diet take a look at Mushroom Cultivation, and see if a home crop might be a possibility for your garden.Note – The author provided a complimentary copy of Mushroom Cultivation to facilitate my review.
As someone whose family enjoys mushroom hunting, I find this to be a very comprehensive overview of mushroom cultivation, starting with preparation and taking one all the way to harvest time.I love that it includes beautiful images and provides details on things that interest me such as the ideal growing environment, structure, differences in taste and potential issues that occur with indoor as well as outdoor cultivation. This book was provided by the generosity of the author for an honest review.
What a wonderful book! I read it several times before writing this review, as it was full of so much information! My kids had unsuccessfully attempted to grow mushrooms, and now we understand why. The specifics of temperature, humidity, sources of contamination, sterilization, and even what base specific mushrooms will grow on, revealed where their attempts fell apart. The tables and pictures of different mushrooms were especially helpful. If you are thinking about cultivating mushrooms, this is a must have!Note that the E-book was sent to us without charge for review.
Great resource for producing various mushrooms in various mediums. Written in a concise, straight forward text, the extra details are there when necessary as the book provides an excellent blend of need to know information combined with plenty of guidance on application. Allows readers to get started quickly, and not swallowed in concepts they can pick up along the way. Excellent read for any and all that are looking in to the endeavor of growing their own mushrooms.
