Plot: 3 to 4 stars. Grammar and Editing: 5 stars. The sense of the the story: 0 stars. This novel had a great beginning and sucked me into purchasing it. BUT then - is our heroine a Regency lady or a 21st Century modern woman? She can't seem to decide and her language and behavior changes erratically. And the hero - Oliver - is a player who doesn't believe in love because of bad parents (sound familiar?), but keeps wanting to seduce our heroine, then make her his mistress, then treat her as a lady, then claim her as a relative, then tell people she is his betrothed --all in two days. Each time he changes how he feels about her, he changes how he talks to her - and she is OK with that. I do hope this is a first novel for a very young writer. The author has promise (see stars for plot), but needs to stick to one voice (read Georgette, dear) and get some really good Beta readers to keep her on track. (And why did they stop searching for Rose?)
As I've come to expect, Adele Clee begins her new series, Lost Ladies of London, with a TREMENDOUS read- The Mysterious Miss Flint. In The Mysterious Miss Flint, the hero, Oliver Darby, returns to England after living on the continent for two years to avoid his despicable father's tyrannical demands. When his father dies, Oliver comes home to become the new Earl of Stanton and be with his younger sister. Unfortunately, he finds out his sister has been missing for six months and no one seems to know or care where she is. Unbeknownst to him, his father has had his sister Lady Rose and a woman hired to be her companion secretly whisked away and are being held prisoner in and old mansion that once was used as an asylum for the insane. The heroine, Nicole Flint, has no idea she will be locked up as a prisoner with the woman for whom she has been hired to act as a companion. Even with scant food and poor treatment, Nicole finds being hidden away is to her advantage as she does not wish to be found for reasons of her own. She has formed a close friendship with Lady Rose however, and aides her in escaping even knowing she will be punished when the escape is discovered.Oliver stumbles on legal papers proving his father to be the owner of the former insane asylum. Knowing the cruelty and maniacal dealings of his father, Oliver goes to the mansion. Unfortunately, Rose has escaped the night before so he has no way to find her.Requesting protection, Nicole goes with Oliver to try to help him find Lady Rose. Through many twists and turns trying to locate Rose and circumvent the late Earl's evil plans, Nicole and Oliver come to respect and eventually fall in love with each other.I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Mysterious Miss Flint and highly recommend it to readers who enjoy Regency romance and mystery.
Every time I read one of this author's books, I am surprised at the level of emotion conveyed. The Mysterious Miss Flint is no different. Although the couple starts off with differing views on love, their journey to find the hero's sister brings them together on every level. Loved it. Can't wait for Rose's story!
Oliver is searching for his sister Rose, but instead he finds her companion Nicole, a feisty readhead. As they spend time together other secrets come to life. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this story, I loved the characters and the secrets and mystery drove the story. But someone might feel the slight cliffhanger at the end annoying. I would have read the next book in the series anyway so I didn’t mind.
The writting is smooth and enjoyable plus the plot is involved enough to hold your attention. The only complaint I have is the unexpected cliffhanger at the end.
A bit of a light mystery, a scurrilous brother, a derelict mansion, an arrogant lord, a runaway lady and a HEA. What could possibly workout? Well, Ms Clee does it again with sharp dialogue and wit to keep me engaged in an actually fairly simplistic story. Fun, enjoyable and just a small amount of angst so that I could settle back and indulge in a bit of historical romance.
i like the story, but again i''find that one of her books is kindle only according to what i have found. this is not fair, and i don'tj think i will buy the rest of the series.
Good set-up and likeable characters, but I found the book periodically boring. Some scenes just went on too long. The book seemed amateurish. Nice enough, but it doesn’t leave me wanting to read the next book in the series..
