About the Author

Dennis O'Brien started his technical career as a COBOL programmer during the early 1970s. He has participated in each daring step made by the industry since then and stands in awe of all that has transpired. This is his first book-writing effort, although he has delivered many symposium sessions and papers, and portions of his published code lives in private software. Through his company, Bruden Corp. (bruden), he has created materials for many technical classes with focus on C language programming, Shell programming, UNIX User, UNIX Admin, UNIX Internals, and various OpenVMS courses.Dennis is a co-owner of the Bruden Corporation. He started working in the computer industry in 1972, began working with and delivering training on OpenVMS in 1983 with Digital Equipment Corp., and has been providing UNIX training and development since 1989 with Vastek Co. and Bruden Corp. He was a co-founder of the Vastek Company. He won five Instructor Excellence awards while working for Digital Equipment Corporation. He provides training and development in UNIX from the user to the internals level. He also provides training in OpenVMS and C programming languages.He has trained many Compaq Computer Corporation's customer support center engineers. He is known by many of Compaq's employees and customers as one of the best technical instructors in the industry. He has a unique ability to address the needs of the most novice and the most technical audiences in a manner that makes learning technical details easy and fun.Dennis lives in Danvers, Massachusetts with his wife Cheryl Dyment and his stepsons Scott Manley and Christopher Manley.Dennis can be reached at dennis.obrien@bruden.David Pitts (dpitts@mk) has been a part of the writing of more than half a dozen books. This book is essential for a unix system administrator student or one who is just starting out. It has the most complete and thorough coverage of daily system routines such as cron and job control. I have not been able to find such coverage of process handling in any of my several system administration books. I have read a few books on shell scripting but this one covers not only how to script but a great deal of knowledge surrounding shell scripting on a daily system administration practical basis. If you want a great reference tool, buy this book.

This book provides an overview of UNIX-LINUX commands. There are not a lot of complete ksh scripts. Korn shell users might want to also consider "Korn Shell: Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Some of the examples in Randal K. Michael's "Mastering UNIX Shell Scripting" are also helpful.

I was disappointed in this book. Most of the book covers things that directly relate to Unix, and not necessarily to korn shell programming. However, if you are new to unix and/or new to korn shell scripting then this should be a good book for you.

He also works for a major defense company designing and developing visible, infrared, and laser-based electro-optical systems. Dr. Fest has 17 years of experience in stray-light and optical scattering analysis. He earned a Ph.D. in optics from the University of Arizona. Alan Symmons is the vice president of corporate engineering for LightPath Technologies, a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of precision glass molded optics. The book arrived right on time! The leaders guide is a concise guide to leading the Beth Moore Daniel study prayerfully with recommended prayers, and efficiently with to do lists before, during (what questions from the workbook to ask), and after each session. It is well worth the cost. It even provides the video fill in the blanks--but the videos have so much more than just the fill in the blanks that they are not to be missed! I'm very glad I purchased the leaders guide. The 2 hours fly by so I need all the help I can get to keep on track. In planning the first hour of discussion, I go through the leaders guide and the workbook at the same time, and mark in the workbook the amount of time that I'll spend on each question and the actual time to finish and end each question so I know how much time we have left leading up to the video which takes about 60 min. The leaders guide is a little unrealistic leaving only 10 minutes for prayer requests and prayers (we are women and we love to catch up!), but I'm considering no longer talking about prayer requests first, and just launching into prayer time, where anyone who wants can jump in with a prayer, saving catch up time for the end of the evening if anyone wants to stay after the 2 hours. Also, the leaders guide groups the questions by type (factual or personal), rather than day of the week, but I just go in order of the workbook since it makes the discussion easier on the leader and the women to remember their answers.

This is by far one of her best studies....I'll just say it like she does, if you get this study and do it, you are in for the ride of your life! Get the video segments for 4.99 each on her website .... you will be so very blessed!!

I felt this was a waste of money. Not helpful except if one is truly 'leading' a group and is uncomfortable, needs help with the leadership portion. I purchased this expecting additional information regarding the study itself such as questions to encourage discussion.

I found this guide to be of little value for my purposes. I am a Bible Study Leader. I found the videos on Daniel to be superb. I made my own guide to better serve our Group purposes and needs.

It is so indepth, we broke it up into 2 separate weekends. One spring, one fall. We then had a volunteer that led the entire 12 week course following the manual provided. Excellent. Can't wait to decide on the next study.
