We were looking for a book about roads we could take to explore this region, with suggested times (eg. day 1 do this, day 2 do that, etc) and routes. The title made this book sound exactly like what we were looking for. Save your money! This is a slim book of about 125 pages with the stuff you can find in just about any guidebook to the region. There is something akin to a pamphlet inside the book devoted to the erstwhile subject of the book, driving routes. That section with 3 routes runs from pages 17 to 43, so around 25 pages including many full-page pictures. There is another 8 or so pages on the area around Lille, which isn't even in Normandy.The description on the Amazon website oversells what you get. In part the description promises "Get around easily - easy-to-read, full-colour route maps, detailed directions". What do you get? 1/2 page maps for each of the routes, and a 1-2 sentence route description for each leg.We wanted a book with suggested routes to visit the many villages and sites in Normany. This isn't that book. I returned it.

He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. After years of building flame effects, aka "booshes," in the local Burn community, Tim began teaching classes called "Propane 101" and "Build Your Own Aluminum Foundry" to help other interested makers create their own projects. As a former firefighter in the Brent Volunteer Fire Department and captain of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Tim has always believed that the most exciting pursuits are at their best when safety is fully understood and becomes part of the culture. A great guide for anyone interested in learning about creating fire art. It covers everything from the very basics (propane, tools, etc), to easy projects (fire torch and pit) and then on to more advanced projects - like how to build large poofers, add electronic controls and more. Deagan's writing is clear, approachable and entertaining. He keeps a good focus on both safety and having fun, and his walkthroughs are excellent.This book is suitable for a total beginner as well as those who already have experience. I have taken fire arts classes, and worked on several fire art projects in the past and I still learned a ton from this book. Enjoy!

I wanted to make a propane-powered flame thing for an event like Burning Man. I'm an experienced maker, and have closely examined other propane flame effects, so I thought I knew what to do. But... it could be dangerous for someone with no experience.This book filled my need perfectly. It goes through some example projects in great detail. It also explains enough of the theory and general principles so it's clear *why* things should be done the way they are. I'm going to build one or two projects from the book to gain experience, then do my own.The book is clear, very well written, and fun to read. I highly recommend it.

Well written has good explanation of the why behind the rules. I have always been interested in fire effects but nervous about experementing for fear I would blow myself up. This book gave me the information I needed and the safety guidance to feel comfortable to experiment with some small fire effects.

Thomas Nagel, in Mind and Cosmos, reached out to some surprising collaborators, and makes some surprising confessions, in this interesting but underpowered exploration. As a result, the book is not effective in getting people to consider the questions he is asking.Nagle assumes that the failure of physicalist reductionism about consciousness is a given, and that the challenges that abiogenesis has encountered are reasonably well known. He then engaged Alvin Plantinga and his anti-materialist, anti-Darwinian thinking – and took what is probably the best piece of thinking that Plantinga has offered. This is the observation that a Darwinian sourced “reasoning” skill is not any more reliable or trustworthy than any of our other Darwinian sourced mental toolkit – so our reasoning, from a survival perspective, is no more valid than our intuitions, moral sense, and consciousness. Therefore one cannot from a Darwinian perspective reference reason or science to dismiss any of the others. Nagel then adds reasoning and reasoning and morality (both as a semi-platonist “reality”) to the suite of surprising things that a worldview must explain the existence of.This gives him four challenging things: life, consciousness, reasoning, and morality, that he considers a worldview has to explain. Given that he assumes that abiogenesis research has stagnated, and consciousness is not reducible, he cannot reference reductive consciousness to explain reasoning or morality, and the book serves as an exploration of the alternatives.After dismissing reduction, Nagel then dismisses theistic phenomena as well. Nagel’s primary alternative is “teleology” – that there is some feature of the universe that makes it predisposed to create reasoning and morality, and that life and consciousness are just way stations to get to these further phenomenon. Nagel tries to address this “teleology” concept generically, and considers a variety of structural or logic challenges to the existence of such a feature.This discussion had a variety of weaknesses. “Teleology” assumes a purpose, I.E. intention, and if this is supposed to be an alternative to theist metaphysics, then a “purpose” driven universe does not strike me as a sufficiently neutral term. There is an alternative to telelogy, that he does not discuss, and does nto explain why. A number of other thinkers, including Stuart Kauffman, Christian DeDuve, and Paul Davies, have proposed self-organizational principles that could fall under the characteristics he calls “teleology”, but without the “intention” implication. Self organization, plus a strong (causally open/independent) emergence principle is far more specific than the generic “teleology”, and is specific enough to evaluate its plausibilityagainst the rest of the universe. These two principles could plausibly increase the odds of life emerging, and make abiogenesis less of a mystery. It is less clear why they would lead living things to be conscious, however – functionalism and AI advances show that we could have been meat machines. And getting from consciousness to reasoning and morality – it is not clear that these two principles would at all. So – perhaps that is why he ignored this prior emergence thinking, as he did not consider it sufficiently powerful an assumption set to deal with his four mysteries.Sticking with his teleology then, despite the theistic implication – there is a major set of questions Nagel fails to ask: what would this assumption predict about the universe, and does the universe match this prediction?• IF the universe were trying to create reasoning or morality,• AND these are only achievable with advanced reasoning minds –• THEN the universe would be configured to produce lots of minds.IF the universe were optimized to produce minds, AND minds were emergent from complex matter (Nagel is assuming emergent property dualism relative to consciousness here), THEN the universe would be configured to consist of basically all complex matter. This is manifestly not the case – only some 7% is matter, and that couldn't form complexity until billions of years into the age of the universe after supernova have formed the higher elements then spread them out. Our universe can support life in something like 0.001% of its mass (roughtly the mass fraction in planets and asteroids), and only starting about 5 billion years after its formation. If teleology was at work in our universe, it is a pretty weak teleology. Nagel admits his purely conceptual discussion of teleology identifies enough problems already that he has a weak case for this idea, and when one adds in simple test cases, the entire concept seems absurd.These very apparent flaws with teleologic emergence highlight the primary flaws in this book. The credibility of this implausible concept of teleological emergence depends on it being less obviously wrong than either reductionist or theistic worldviews, but Nagel provides his readers no resources to make this comparison.The most controversial passages in the book are two paragraphs in the introduction in which Nagel defends the Intelligent Design movement. This section is once more underpowered. Nagel admits himself to be not competent to judge the outcome of ID's dispute with Darwinian thinking, but then contradictorily renders a judgment that ID did not lose decisively, credits them for asking good questions, then moves on, leaving readers hanging. Another few paragraphs outlining the something like my own thinking in the following would have done wonders: "In **my** judgment ID lost decisively as a science theory, as ID avoided ever making any predictions, and predictions are a prerequisite for science. What ID DID do was identify test cases for Darwinian thinking. Evolution is an incremental process, and it cannot make steps larger than some TBD size. WHAT IS THAT SIZE, and HOW DO WE MEASURE/TEST FOR IT??? it usually takes an opposing theory to force advocates to answer such test questions, and ID provides such a challenge. ID advocates proposed their own answers: Irreducible Complexity to define what is outside the step size, and Specified Complexity to do the measuring. These may be imperfect terms, and they have been criticized, but if they are flawed it is incumbent on evolutionists to specify what testable alternatives should look like. Intrinsic to the ID thinking is that Abiogenesis will fall outside the range of what evolutionary processes can achieve – and it really is up to abiogenesis advocates to answer why it should be considered a plausible process, and the terms in which such a claim should be made." If Nagel had written some similar supplement, he would have avoided a lot of the flack that he recieved.Nagel reveals much of his personal views here. He notes that he is an atheist, who considers theism to be implausible to the extreme. He also admits to wishing that reductive physicalism was how the universe works. But he considers the rationale against reductive physicalism to be extremely convincing. And given the problems he sees in theism, he felt compelled to try to find some emergentist alternative worldview. This is admirable, however this admirable effort suffers from both a) he does not spell out this convincing rationale to encourage other physicalist-leaning thinkers to follow his lead in pursuing these ideas, and b) the ideas he came up with are so weak.

This thinking is very much in line with much of the field of bioinformatics and recent evolutionary researchers such as Jablonka, Shapiro, Kirschner and Witzany.On page 106: "An adequate conception of the cosmos must contain the resources to account for how it could have given rise to beings capable of thinking successfully about what is good and bad, right and wrong, and discovering moral and evaluative truths that do not depend on their own beliefs."I do have some criticisms. At numerous points he drifts into statements that are purely his own conception of how things seem to be. I also think his dismissal of theistic philosophy is unwarranted. At one points he simply states that there is no evidence for God and then moves on with no further justification... as though the matter has long been settled.Inferences to God and philosophical arguments for God are no more easily dismissed than anything else he argues in this book; just read Antony Flew's last work. Philosopher Alvin Plantinga's review of this book is well worth a read, by the way.It is inevitable that an author such as Nagel will be smeared by hardline Darwinists and New Atheists, who generally don't trouble themselves with such inconveniences as civility and dialogue. I give him 5 stars for the courage to take on a cabal of vocal and peevish bullies.I salute him even more for taking a middle position between the theists and materialists, knowing that he will get flack from both sides. Mr. Nagel, thank you for writing this book.

I found this book worthwhile, but not what I would call 'the perfect solution". I am over 70 and have spent my life living frugally, continually saving and investing for the future and retirement. I have been quite successful at growing net worth, while living comfortably. I truly believe a key component is learning who you are and understanding how you are best suited to reach your goals. I personally think this book is too caught up in looking at every penny. I think each penny is important, but have focused on being sure there is constant savings. I don't expect my approach to work for everyone, but I want to emphasize that there can be many paths to reach the same goals. I suggest reading a wide variety of approaches that focus on saving and investing for the long haul. I have made small changes along the way when trying new things. In the end I have found that success came with simplicity. Look for the big picture in the book and any other. Growing wealth is like growing a big tree, strong trees grow big over a long time.

Basic principles of this book are decent, however, the principles are not gold and it could be summed up well in 50 pages or less...not the redundant, ranting 300 page book it is.First 80 pages of the book are worthless and torture mostly focusing on the consumerism/doomed/horrible smog-infested society we live in, last two chapters most useful and can be read in a bookstore.I did not like many examples given; it seemed to focus on divorce excessively with ~ 80% of case report examples of "FI-ers" being divorced which I found rather odd and unnecessary to mention.Take home points of this book: Spend less than you earn, save, document every penny you spend, become a minimalist and only purchase things you need, the less you need the more fulfilled you will be, the less you will work, etc.Things to consider:1) The "FIer" lifestyle is not for everyone- I equate an "FIer" to the tiny home movement in principle.2) Book recommends that bonds should be the mainstay and the only thing in your portfolio. I strongly would discourage this. "Safe" bonds which I pretty much consider anything that that is not a junk bond or preferred stock bond, are not hitting the high yields that Joe Dominguez saw in his day and on many years aren't comparing to rises in inflation. While you can never predict the stock market, when looking at time tables- it always goes up. Traditionally, stock markets rise while bond yields go down some and visa versa. The best way for security and safety is proper allocation to each of these modalities: bonds (treasury bonds are great as mentioned in the book because you aren't charged state taxes, however, what the book fails to remind you of is that federal taxes are still fair game) and diversified stock portfolio most safely done by investing in mutual index funds with low fees (e.g. Vanguard). The older you are, for safety, the more bonds you should have in case the stock market plummets during your retirement years. For conservatives a 60% mutual funds and 40% bonds is recommended. For a retirement person, 20% stocks and 80% bonds should be considered. When you have all your eggs in one basket, you lose that safety net.3) Other things I disagree with in this book- everyone should have health insurance, you should not forgo this to "save" money; sure buy the less comprehensive plan if you are healthy and pay less and have a higher deductible but you are gambling when you forgo it all together.4) They also suggest in this book "rolling-over" your 401k and 403b accounts to bonds; however, these are pre-taxed dollars and you will likely get slammed- most retirement plans now give options to the "risk" or rather stock/bond ratio you desire. I would more likely suggest rolling money to Roth IRAs (post-tax and therefore tax free with capital gains) or just leave your nest egg to compound growth where they are at.Now I am ranting. Cheers.

The first 8 chapters of the book are great, chapter 9 should just be deleted. The original book recommended putting 100% in Treasuries. Since that is clearly a terrible idea now, the book grudgingly recommends index funds.The thing that drives me nuts is the book says that it took 25 years for the stock market to recover from the Great Depression. This is a lie, when you account for dividends and deflation it took 4.5 years to recover if you put a lump sum in at the absolute peak.If you’re going to try and scare people at least be honest. Also if you’re going to pretend that 100% treasuries was a great idea in the 80s at least mention that a 60/40 stock bond blend would have blown it out of the water.

As a Certified Financial Planner professional with over ten years of experience helping clients with retirement planning, I'm sincerely impressed by this book, and have to say that this is a powerful resource for anyone that is seriously interested in becoming Financially Independent (FI). My only feedback is that the book, doesn't emphasize enough, how difficult it is, when you have a spouse or life partner, to change deeply rooted financial money scripts and behaviors. That said, if you (and your life partner) are dedicated to Financial Independence, then this read, is in my professional opinion, a very worthy investment of "life energy" in deed. The content is good, but it is written as if someone just dictated a seminar that lasted a week. It is full of "take Mary for example, she did blah blah blah and blah blah happened" followed by 3 more examples. Yea, I get it. I got it before the example and now I am just annoyed skimming past the examples thinking about the trees that were killed for no reason. Overall, there is some good content in the book, but it could have been cut down 25% easily. After reading the first half of the book I learned to just skip over the examples and skim some of the paragraphs to keep my sanity to make it through to the end

This is the perfect finance book for someone who is now starting out and really for anyone that is trying to get a different perspective on money and how they handle it.However there are some flaws with it number one being that I don’t believe that financial independence or the crossover point as it is called in the book is that easy to maintain once it is reached as several of the examples in the book spoke of people having to readjust their lifestyle when life changed which is something that we all know will happen.Overall however I think tracking your money, seeing your money as your life energy, tracking your income versus expenses for a long period of time and using the three questions to see if you’re getting the best value both emotionally and in line with your values is excellent advice so I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationship with money.

It is a perfect introduction-level book for young readers. I highly recommend this volume and am pleased that I made the purchase. It is written in an excellent format for young readers. Not overly complicated.

My husband took my kids to an exhibit about the Titanic a few months ago, and ever since, my son (age 7) has been interested in the Titanic. He's not the strongest reader, either in terms of interest or skill, but this book really captured his interest, and we'd trade off reading pages. He loved it. We just finished the Gettysburg title in the same series... the series is a bit weird to me because of the focus on some fairly serious disasters. But I think that's just a girl perspective. I think the writers do a good job of balancing the needs to be realistic/true and to be careful about their audience. So I'd really recommend this book.
